1 La visión de la fruta madura<br />Entonces el Señor<br /> Soberano me mostró otra visión. Esta vez vi una cesta llena de fruta madura.

2 —¿Qué ves, Amós? —me preguntó.<br />—Una cesta repleta de fruta madura —contesté.<br />Entonces el Señor<br /> dijo:<br />—Al igual que esta fruta, ¡Israel está maduro para el castigo! No volveré a demorar su castigo.

3 En aquel día el canto en el templo se convertirá en lamento. Habrá cadáveres tirados por todas partes. Serán llevados fuera de la ciudad en silencio. ¡Yo, el Señor<br /> Soberano, he hablado!

4 ¡Escuchen esto, ustedes que roban al pobre<br />y pisotean al necesitado!

5 Ustedes no se aguantan a que termine el día de descanso<br />y a que se acaben los festivales religiosos<br />para volver a estafar al desamparado.<br />Pesan el grano con medidas falsas<br />y estafan al comprador con balanzas fraudulentas.

6 Y el grano que venden lo mezclan<br />con los deshechos barridos del piso.<br />Por una moneda de plata o un par de sandalias,<br />convierten en esclavos a los pobres.

7 Ahora el Señor<br /> ha hecho este juramento<br />por su propio nombre, el Orgullo de Israel:<br />«¡Nunca olvidaré<br />las cosas perversas que han hecho!

8 La tierra temblará a causa de sus acciones<br />y todos harán duelo.<br />La tierra subirá como el río Nilo en tiempo de inundaciones;<br />se levantará y volverá a hundirse.

9 »En aquel día —dice el Señor<br /> Soberano—<br />haré que el sol se ponga al mediodía<br />y que en pleno día se oscurezca la tierra.

10 Convertiré sus celebraciones en lamentos<br />y su cantar en llanto.<br />Se vestirán de luto<br />y se raparán la cabeza en señal de dolor,<br />como si su único hijo hubiera muerto.<br />¡Qué tan amargo será ese día!

11 »Ciertamente se acerca la hora —dice el Señor<br /> Soberano—<br />cuando enviaré hambre a la tierra,<br />no será hambre de pan ni sed de agua,<br />sino hambre de oír las palabras del Señor<br />.

12 La gente deambulará de mar a mar<br />y vagará de frontera a frontera<br />en busca de la palabra del Señor<br />,<br />pero no la encontrarán.

13 En aquel día, las jóvenes hermosas y los muchachos fuertes se desmayarán,<br />sedientos por la palabra del Señor<br />.

14 Y los que juran por los vergonzosos ídolos de Samaria,<br />los que hacen juramentos en nombre del dios de Dan<br />y votos en nombre del dios de Beerseba,<br />todos caerán y nunca más se levantarán».

1 This is what the Sovereign LORD showed me: a basket of ripe fruit.

2 “What do you see, Amos?” he asked. “A basket of ripe fruit,” I answered. Then the LORD said to me, “The time is ripe for my people Israel; I will spare them no longer.

3 “In that day,” declares the Sovereign LORD, “the songs in the temple will turn to wailing. Many, many bodies—flung everywhere! Silence!”

4 Hear this, you who trample the needy and do away with the poor of the land,

5 saying, “When will the New Moon be over that we may sell grain, and the Sabbath be ended that we may market wheat?”— skimping on the measure, boosting the price and cheating with dishonest scales,

6 buying the poor with silver and the needy for a pair of sandals, selling even the sweepings with the wheat.

7 The LORD has sworn by himself, the Pride of Jacob: “I will never forget anything they have done.

8 “Will not the land tremble for this, and all who live in it mourn? The whole land will rise like the Nile; it will be stirred up and then sink like the river of Egypt.

9 “In that day,” declares the Sovereign LORD, “I will make the sun go down at noon and darken the earth in broad daylight.

10 I will turn your religious festivals into mourning and all your singing into weeping. I will make all of you wear sackcloth and shave your heads. I will make that time like mourning for an only son and the end of it like a bitter day.

11 “The days are coming,” declares the Sovereign LORD, “when I will send a famine through the land— not a famine of food or a thirst for water, but a famine of hearing the words of the LORD.

12 People will stagger from sea to sea and wander from north to east, searching for the word of the LORD, but they will not find it.

13 “In that day “the lovely young women and strong young men will faint because of thirst.

14 Those who swear by the sin of Samaria— who say, ‘As surely as your god lives, Dan,’ or, ‘As surely as the god of Beersheba lives’— they will fall, never to rise again.”
