1 I saw the Lord standing upon the altar, and he said, Smite the threshold and shake the doors and cut the head of them all into pieces; and I will slay the last of them with the sword; there shall be none of them <em>left</em> to flee away or to escape.
1 I saw the Lord standing by the altar, and he said: “Strike the tops of the pillars so that the thresholds shake. Bring them down on the heads of all the people; those who are left I will kill with the sword. Not one will get away, none will escape.
2 Though they dig unto Sheol, from there shall my hand take them; though they climb up to heaven, from there I will bring them down;
2 Though they dig down to the depths below, from there my hand will take them. Though they climb up to the heavens above, from there I will bring them down.
3 and though they hide themselves in the top of Carmel, I will search and take them out of there; and though they hide from my sight in the bottom of the sea, from there will I command the serpent, and he shall bite them:
3 Though they hide themselves on the top of Carmel, there I will hunt them down and seize them. Though they hide from my eyes at the bottom of the sea, there I will command the serpent to bite them.
4 and though they go into captivity before their enemies, from there I will command the sword, and it shall slay them: and I will set my eyes upon them for evil, and not for good.
4 Though they are driven into exile by their enemies, there I will command the sword to slay them. “I will keep my eye on them for harm and not for good.”
5 The Lord GOD of the hosts <em>is</em> he that touches the earth, and it shall melt, and all that dwell therein shall mourn: and it shall all rise up like <em>a</em> river and shall be sunk, as the river of Egypt.
5 The Lord, the LORD Almighty— he touches the earth and it melts, and all who live in it mourn; the whole land rises like the Nile, then sinks like the river of Egypt;
6 He that built his degrees in the heaven and has founded his gathering upon the earth; he that calls the waters of the sea and pours them out upon the face of the earth: The LORD <em>is</em> his name.
6 he builds his lofty palace in the heavens and sets its foundation on the earth; he calls for the waters of the sea and pours them out over the face of the land— the LORD is his name.
7 O sons of Israel, <em>Are</em> ye not as sons of the Ethiopians unto me, said the LORD? Have not I brought up Israel out of the land of Egypt? and the Palestinians from Caphtor, and the Syrians from Kir?
7 “Are not you Israelites the same to me as the Cushites ?” declares the LORD. “Did I not bring Israel up from Egypt, the Philistines from Caphtorand the Arameans from Kir?
8 Behold, the eyes of the Lord GOD <em>are</em> against the sinful kingdom, and I will destroy it from off the face of the earth saving that I will not utterly destroy the house of Jacob, said the LORD.
8 “Surely the eyes of the Sovereign LORDare on the sinful kingdom. I will destroy it from the face of the earth. Yet I will not totally destroy the descendants of Jacob,” declares the LORD.
9 For, behold, I will command, and I will cause the house of Israel to be sifted among all the Gentiles like as <em>the grain</em> is sifted in a sieve, yet shall not the least grain fall to the earth.
9 “For I will give the command, and I will shake the people of Israel among all the nations as grain is shaken in a sieve, and not a pebble will reach the ground.
10 All the sinners of my people shall die by the sword, who say, For our sake the evil shall not come near nor overtake us.
10 All the sinners among my people will die by the sword, all those who say, ‘Disaster will not overtake or meet us.’
11 In that day I will raise up the tabernacle of David that is fallen and close up its breaches; and I will raise up its ruins, and I will build it as in the days of old:
11 “In that day I will restore David’s fallen shelter— I will repair its broken walls and restore its ruins— and will rebuild it as it used to be,
12 that those who are called by my name may possess the remnant of Edom and all the Gentiles, said the LORD that does this.
12 so that they may possess the remnant of Edom and all the nations that bear my name, ” declares the LORD, who will do these things.
13 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that the plowman shall catch up with the reaper, and the treader of grapes with him that sows seed; and the mountains shall drop new wine, and all the hills shall melt.
13 “The days are coming,” declares the LORD, “when the reaper will be overtaken by the plowman and the planter by the one treading grapes. New wine will drip from the mountains and flow from all the hills,
14 And I will turn the captivity of my people of Israel, and they shall build the waste cities and inhabit <em>them</em>; and they shall plant vineyards and drink the wine thereof; they shall also make gardens and eat the fruit of them.
14 and I will bring my people Israel back from exile.“They will rebuild the ruined cities and live in them. They will plant vineyards and drink their wine; they will make gardens and eat their fruit.
15 For I will plant them upon their land, and they shall no more be pulled up out of their land which I have given them, said the LORD thy God.
15 I will plant Israel in their own land, never again to be uprooted from the land I have given them,” says the LORD your God.
