1 This is the book of the commandments of God, and the law that endureth for ever: all they that keep it shall come to life; but such as leave it shall die.
1 She is the book of the commandments of God, the law that endures forever. All who hold her fast will live, and those who forsake her will die.
2 Turn thee, O Jacob, and take hold of it: walk in the presence of the light thereof, that thou mayest be illuminated.
2 Turn, O Jacob, and take her; walk toward the shining of her light.
3 Give not thine honour to another, nor the things that are profitable unto thee to a strange nation.
3 Do not give your glory to another, or your advantages to an alien people.
4 O Israel, happy are we: for things that are pleasing to God are made known unto us.
4 Happy are we, O Israel, for we know what is pleasing to God.
5 Be of good cheer, my people, the memorial of Israel.
5 Take courage, my people, who perpetuate Israel's name!
6 Ye were sold to the nations, not for destruction: but because ye moved God to wrath, ye were delivered unto the enemies.
6 It was not for destruction that you were sold to the nations, but you were handed over to your enemies because you angered God.
7 For ye provoked him that made you by sacrificing unto devils, and not to God.
7 For you provoked the one who made you by sacrificing to demons and not to God.
8 Ye have forgotten the everlasting God, that brought you up; and ye have grieved Jerusalem, that nursed you.
8 You forgot the everlasting God, who brought you up, and you grieved Jerusalem, who reared you.
9 For when she saw the wrath of God coming upon you, she said, Hearken, O ye that dwell about Sion: God hath brought upon me great mourning;
9 For she saw the wrath that came upon you from God, and she said: Listen, you neighbors of Zion, God has brought great sorrow upon me;
10 For I saw the captivity of my sons and daughters, which the Everlasting brought upon them.
10 for I have seen the exile of my sons and daughters, which the Everlasting brought upon them.
11 With joy did I nourish them; but sent them away with weeping and mourning.
11 With joy I nurtured them, but I sent them away with weeping and sorrow.
12 Let no man rejoice over me, a widow, and forsaken of many, who for the sins of my children am left desolate; because they departed from the law of God.
12 Let no one rejoice over me, a widow and bereaved of many; I was left desolate because of the sins of my children, because they turned away from the law of God.
13 They knew not his statutes, nor walked in the ways of his commandments, nor trod in the paths of discipline in his righteousness.
13 They had no regard for his statutes; they did not walk in the ways of God's commandments, or tread the paths his righteousness showed them.
14 Let them that dwell about Sion come, and remember ye the captivity of my sons and daughters, which the Everlasting hath brought upon them.
14 Let the neighbors of Zion come; remember the capture of my sons and daughters, which the Everlasting brought upon them.
15 For he hath brought a nation upon them from far, a shameless nation, and of a strange language, who neither reverenced old man, nor pitied child.
15 For he brought a distant nation against them, a nation ruthless and of a strange language, which had no respect for the aged and no pity for a child.
16 These have carried away the dear beloved children of the widow, and left her that was alone desolate without daughters.
16 They led away the widow's beloved sons, and bereaved the lonely woman of her daughters.
17 But what can I help you?
17 But I, how can I help you?
18 For he that brought these plagues upon you will deliver you from the hands of your enemies.
18 For he who brought these calamities upon you will deliver you from the hand of your enemies.
19 Go your way, O my children, go your way: for I am left desolate.
19 Go, my children, go; for I have been left desolate.
20 I have put off the clothing of peace, and put upon me the sackcloth of my prayer: I will cry unto the Everlasting in my days.
20 I have taken off the robe of peace and put on sackcloth for my supplication; I will cry to the Everlasting all my days.
21 Be of good cheer, O my children, cry unto the Lord, and he will deliver you from the power and hand of the enemies.
21 Take courage, my children, cry to God, and he will deliver you from the power and hand of the enemy.
22 For my hope is in the Everlasting, that he will save you; and joy is come unto me from the Holy One, because of the mercy which shall soon come unto you from the Everlasting our Saviour.
22 For I have put my hope in the Everlasting to save you, and joy has come to me from the Holy One, because of the mercy that will soon come to you from your everlasting savior.
23 For I sent you out with mourning and weeping: but God will give you to me again with joy and gladness for ever.
23 For I sent you out with sorrow and weeping, but God will give you back to me with joy and gladness forever.
24 Like as now the neighbours of Sion have seen your captivity: so shall they see shortly your salvation from our God which shall come upon you with great glory, and brightness of the Everlasting.
24 For as the neighbors of Zion have now seen your capture, so they soon will see your salvation by God, which will come to you with great glory and with the splendor of the Everlasting.
25 My children, suffer patiently the wrath that is come upon you from God: for thine enemy hath persecuted thee; but shortly thou shalt see his destruction, and shalt tread upon his neck.
25 My children, endure with patience the wrath that has come upon you from God. Your enemy has overtaken you, but you will soon see their destruction and will tread upon their necks.
26 My delicate ones have gone rough ways, and were taken away as a flock caught of the enemies.
26 My pampered children have traveled rough roads; they were taken away like a flock carried off by the enemy.
27 Be of good comfort, O my children, and cry unto God: for ye shall be remembered of him that brought these things upon you.
27 Take courage, my children, and cry to God, for you will be remembered by the one who brought this upon you.
28 For as it was your mind to go astray from God: so, being returned, seek him ten times more.
28 For just as you were disposed to go astray from God, return with tenfold zeal to seek him.
29 For he that hath brought these plagues upon you shall bring you everlasting joy with your salvation.
29 For the one who brought these calamities upon you will bring you everlasting joy with your salvation.
30 Take a good heart, O Jerusalem: for he that gave thee that name will comfort thee.
30 Take courage, O Jerusalem, for the one who named you will comfort you.
31 Miserable are they that afflicted thee, and rejoiced at thy fall.
31 Wretched will be those who mistreated you and who rejoiced at your fall.
32 Miserable are the cities which thy children served: miserable is she that received thy sons.
32 Wretched will be the cities that your children served as slaves; wretched will be the city that received your offspring.
33 For as she rejoiced at thy ruin, and was glad of thy fall: so shall she be grieved for her own desolation.
33 For just as she rejoiced at your fall and was glad for your ruin, so she will be grieved at her own desolation.
34 For I will take away the rejoicing of her great multitude, and her pride shall be turned into mourning.
34 I will take away her pride in her great population, and her insolence will be turned to grief.
35 For fire shall come upon her from the Everlasting, long to endure; and she shall be inhabited of devils for a great time.
35 For fire will come upon her from the Everlasting for many days, and for a long time she will be inhabited by demons.
36 O Jerusalem, look about thee toward the east, and behold the joy that cometh unto thee from God.
36 Look toward the east, O Jerusalem, and see the joy that is coming to you from God.
37 Lo, thy sons come, whom thou sentest away, they come gathered together from the east to the west by the word of the Holy One, rejoicing in the glory of God.
37 Look, your children are coming, whom you sent away; they are coming, gathered from east and west, at the word of the Holy One, rejoicing in the glory of God.
