Hebrew Names Version HNV
The Message Bible MSG
1 It pleased Daryavesh to set over the kingdom one hundred twenty satraps, who should be throughout the whole kingdom;
1
Darius reorganized his kingdom. He appointed one hundred twenty governors to administer all the parts of his realm.
2 and over them three presidents, of whom Daniyel was one; that these satraps might give account to them, and that the king should have no damage.
2
Over them were three vice-regents, one of whom was Daniel. The governors reported to the vice-regents, who made sure that everything was in order for the king.
3 Then this Daniyel was distinguished above the presidents and the satraps, because an excellent spirit was in him; and the king thought to set him over the whole realm.
3
But Daniel, brimming with spirit and intelligence, so completely outclassed the other vice-regents and governors that the king decided to put him in charge of the whole kingdom.
4 Then the presidents and the satraps sought to find occasion against Daniyel as touching the kingdom; but they could find no occasion nor fault, because he was faithful, neither was there any error or fault found in him.
4
The vice-regents and governors got together to find some old scandal or skeleton in Daniel's life that they could use against him, but they couldn't dig up anything. He was totally exemplary and trustworthy. They could find no evidence of negligence or misconduct.
5 Then said these men, We shall not find any occasion against this Daniyel, except we find it against him concerning the law of his God.
5
So they finally gave up and said, "We're never going to find anything against this Daniel unless we can cook up something religious."
6 Then these presidents and satraps assembled together to the king, and said thus to him, King Daryavesh, live forever.
6
The vice-regents and governors conspired together and then went to the king and said, "King Darius, live forever!
7 All the presidents of the kingdom, the deputies and the satraps, the counselors and the governors, have consulted together to establish a royal statute, and to make a strong interdict, that whoever shall ask a petition of any god or man for thirty days, save of you, O king, he shall be cast into the den of lions.
7
We've convened your vice-regents, governors, and all your leading officials, and have agreed that the king should issue the following decree: For the next thirty days no one is to pray to any god or mortal except you, O king. Anyone who disobeys will be thrown into the lions' den.
8 Now, O king, establish the interdict, and sign the writing, that it not be changed, according to the law of the Madai and Paras, which doesn't alter.
8
"Issue this decree, O king, and make it unconditional, as if written in stone like all the laws of the Medes and the Persians."
9 Therefore king Daryavesh signed the writing and the interdict.
9
King Darius signed the decree.
10 When Daniyel knew that the writing was signed, he went into his house (now his windows were open in his chamber toward Yerushalayim) and he kneeled on his knees three times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before his God, as he did before.
10
When Daniel learned that the decree had been signed and posted, he continued to pray just as he had always done. His house had windows in the upstairs that opened toward Jerusalem. Three times a day he knelt there in prayer, thanking and praising his God.
11 Then these men assembled together, and found Daniyel making petition and supplication before his God.
11
The conspirators came and found him praying, asking God for help.
12 Then they came near, and spoke before the king concerning the king's interdict: Haven't you signed an interdict, that every man who shall make petition to any god or man within thirty days, save to you, O king, shall be cast into the den of lions? The king answered, The thing is true, according to the law of the Madai and Paras, which doesn't alter.
12
They went straight to the king and reminded him of the royal decree that he had signed. "Did you not," they said, "sign a decree forbidding anyone to pray to any god or man except you for the next thirty days? And anyone caught doing it would be thrown into the lions' den?" "Absolutely," said the king. "Written in stone, like all the laws of the Medes and Persians."
13 Then answered they and said before the king, That Daniyel, who is of the children of the captivity of Yehudah, doesn't regard you, O king, nor the interdict that you have signed, but makes his petition three times a day.
13
Then they said, "Daniel, one of the Jewish exiles, ignores you, O king, and defies your decree. Three times a day he prays."
14 Then the king, when he heard these words, was sore displeased, and set his heart on Daniyel to deliver him; and he labored until the going down of the sun to rescue him.
14
At this, the king was very upset and tried his best to get Daniel out of the fix he'd put him in. He worked at it the whole day long.
15 Then these men assembled together to the king, and said to the king, Know, O king, that it is a law of the Madai and Paras, that no interdict nor statute which the king establishes may be changed.
15
But then the conspirators were back: "Remember, O king, it's the law of the Medes and Persians that the king's decree can never be changed."
16 Then the king commanded, and they brought Daniyel, and cast him into the den of lions. [Now] the king spoke and said to Daniyel, Your God whom you serve continually, he will deliver you.
16
The king caved in and ordered Daniel brought and thrown into the lions' den. But he said to Daniel, "Your God, to whom you are so loyal, is going to get you out of this."
17 A stone was brought, and laid on the mouth of the den; and the king sealed it with his own signet, and with the signet of his lords; that nothing might be changed concerning Daniyel.
17
A stone slab was placed over the opening of the den. The king sealed the cover with his signet ring and the signet rings of all his nobles, fixing Daniel's fate.
18 Then the king went to his palace, and passed the night fasting; neither were instruments of music brought before him: and his sleep fled from him.
18
The king then went back to his palace. He refused supper. He couldn't sleep. He spent the night fasting.
19 Then the king arose very early in the morning, and went in haste to the den of lions.
19
At daybreak the king got up and hurried to the lions' den.
20 When he came near to the den to Daniyel, he cried with a lamentable voice; the king spoke and said to Daniyel, Daniyel, servant of the living God, is your God, whom you serve continually, able to deliver you from the lions?
20
As he approached the den, he called out anxiously, "Daniel, servant of the living God, has your God, whom you serve so loyally, saved you from the lions?"
21 Then said Daniyel to the king, O king, live forever.
21
"O king, live forever!" said Daniel.
22 My God has sent his angel, and has shut the lions' mouths, and they have not hurt me; because as before him innocence was found in me; and also before you, O king, have I done no hurt.
22
"My God sent his angel, who closed the mouths of the lions so that they would not hurt me. I've been found innocent before God and also before you, O king. I've done nothing to harm you."
23 Then was the king exceeding glad, and commanded that they should take Daniyel up out of the den. So Daniyel was taken up out of the den, and no manner of hurt was found on him, because he had trusted in his God.
23
When the king heard these words, he was happy. He ordered Daniel taken up out of the den. When he was hauled up, there wasn't a scratch on him. He had trusted his God.
24 The king commanded, and they brought those men who had accused Daniyel, and they cast them into the den of lions, them, their children, and their wives; and the lions had the mastery of them, and broke all their bones in pieces, before they came to the bottom of the den.
24
Then the king commanded that the conspirators who had informed on Daniel be thrown into the lions' den, along with their wives and children. Before they hit the floor, the lions had them in their jaws, tearing them to pieces.
25 Then king Daryavesh wrote to all the peoples, nations, and languages, who dwell in all the eretz: Shalom be multiplied to you.
25
King Darius published this proclamation to every race, color, and creed on earth: Peace to you! Abundant peace!
26 I make a decree, that in all the dominion of my kingdom men tremble and fear before the God of Daniyel; for he is the living God, and steadfast forever, His kingdom that which shall not be destroyed; and his dominion shall be even to the end.
26
I decree that Daniel's God shall be worshiped and feared in all parts of my kingdom. He is the living God, world without end. His kingdom never falls. His rule continues eternally.
27 He delivers and rescues, and he works signs and wonders in heaven and in eretz, who has delivered Daniyel from the power of the lions.
27
He is a savior and rescuer. He performs astonishing miracles in heaven and on earth. He saved Daniel from the power of the lions.
28 So this Daniyel prospered in the reign of Daryavesh, and in the reign of Koresh the Parsian.
28
From then on, Daniel was treated well during the reign of Darius, and also in the following reign of Cyrus the Persian.
