Deuteronomy 28

CEB

MSG

1 Now if you really obey the LORD your God's voice, by carefully keeping all his commandments that I am giving you right now, then the LORD your God will set you high above all nations on earth.
1 If you listen obediently to the Voice of God, your God, and heartily obey all his commandments that I command you today, God, your God, will place you on high, high above all the nations of the world.
2 All these blessings will come upon you and find you if you obey the LORD your God's voice:
2 All these blessings will come down on you and spread out beyond you because you have responded to the Voice of God, your God:
3 You will be blessed in the city and blessed in the field.
3 God's blessing inside the city, God's blessing in the country;
4 Your own fertility, your soil's produce, and your livestock's offspring—the young of both cattle and flocks—will be blessed.
4 God's blessing on your children, the crops of your land, the young of your livestock, the calves of your herds, the lambs of your flocks.
5 Your basket and your kneading bowl will be blessed.
5 God's blessing on your basket and bread bowl;
6 You will be blessed when you are out and about and blessed when you come back.
6 God's blessing in your coming in, God's blessing in your going out.
7 The LORD will defeat any enemies who attack you. They will come against you from one direction but will run for their lives away from you in seven different directions.
7 God will defeat your enemies who attack you. They'll come at you on one road and run away on seven roads.
8 The LORD will command the blessing to be with you—in your barns and on all the work you do—and he will bless you on the land the LORD your God is giving you.
8 God will order a blessing on your barns and workplaces; he'll bless you in the land that God, your God, is giving you.
9 The LORD will establish you as his own, a holy nation, just as he swore to you, if you keep the LORD your God's commandments and walk in his ways.
9 God will form you as a people holy to him, just as he promised you, if you keep the commandments of God, your God, and live the way he has shown you.
10 All the earth's peoples will see that you are called by the LORD's name, and they will be in awe of you.
10 All the peoples on Earth will see you living under the Name of God and hold you in respectful awe.
11 The LORD will make good things abound for you—whether the fertility of your womb, your livestock's offspring, or your fertile soil's produce—on the very land that the LORD swore to your ancestors to give to you.
11 God will lavish you with good things: children from your womb, offspring from your animals, and crops from your land, the land that God promised your ancestors that he would give you.
12 The LORD will open up for you his own well-stocked storehouse, the heavens, providing your land with rain at just the right time and blessing all your work. You will lend to many nations, but you won't have any need to borrow.
12 God will throw open the doors of his sky vaults and pour rain on your land on schedule and bless the work you take in hand. You will lend to many nations but you yourself won't have to take out a loan.
13 The LORD will make you the head of things, not the tail; you will be at the top of things, not the bottom, as long as you obey the LORD your God's commandments that I'm commanding you right now, by carefully doing them.
13 God will make you the head, not the tail; you'll always be the top dog, never the bottom dog, as you obediently listen to and diligently keep the commands of God, your God, that I am commanding you today.
14 Don't deviate even a bit from any of these words that I'm commanding you right now by following other gods and serving them.
14 Don't swerve an inch to the right or left from the words that I command you today by going off following and worshiping other gods.
15 But if you don't obey the LORD your God's voice by carefully doing all his commandments and his regulations that I am commanding you right now, all these curses will come upon you and find you.
15 Here's what will happen if you don't obediently listen to the Voice of God, your God, and diligently keep all the commandments and guidelines that I'm commanding you today. All these curses will come down hard on you:
16 You will be cursed in the city and cursed in the field.
16 God's curse in the city, God's curse in the country;
17 Your basket and kneading bowl will be cursed.
17 God's curse on your basket and bread bowl;
18 Your own fertility, your soil's produce, your cattle's young, and your flock's offspring will be cursed.
18 God's curse on your children, the crops of your land, the young of your livestock, the calves of your herds, the lambs of your flocks.
19 You will be cursed when you are out and about and cursed when you come back.
19 God's curse in your coming in, God's curse in your going out.
20 The LORD will send calamity, confusion, and frustration on you no matter what work you are doing until you are wiped out and until you disappear—it'll be quick!—because of the evil acts by which you have abandoned him.
20 God will send The Curse, The Confusion, The Contrariness down on everything you try to do until you've been destroyed and there's nothing left of you - all because of your evil pursuits that led you to abandon me.
21 The LORD will make a plague stick to you until he has totally wiped you off the fertile land you are entering to possess.
21 God will infect you with The Disease, wiping you right off the land that you're going in to possess.
22 The LORD will strike you with consumption, fever, and inflammation; with scorching heat and drought; with destruction and disease for your crops. These things will chase you until you are dead and gone.
22 God will set consumption and fever and rash and seizures and dehydration and blight and jaundice on you. They'll hunt you down until they kill you.
23 The sky over your head will be as hard as bronze; the earth under your feet will be like iron.
23 The sky over your head will become an iron roof, the ground under your feet, a slab of concrete.
24 The LORD will turn the rain on your land into dust. Only dirt will fall down on you from the sky until you are completely wiped out.
24 From out of the skies God will rain ash and dust down on you until you suffocate.
25 The LORD will hand you over defeated to your enemies. You will go out against them by one direction, but you will run for your life away from them in seven different directions. All the earth's kingdoms will be horrified by you.
25 God will defeat you by enemy attack. You'll come at your enemies on one road and run away on seven roads. All the kingdoms of Earth will see you as a horror.
26 Your corpses will be food for every bird in the sky and animal on earth; no one will frighten them off.
26 Carrion birds and animals will boldly feast on your dead body with no one to chase them away.
27 The LORD will afflict you with Egyptian inflammation, hemorrhoids, rash, and itch. You will be untreatable.
27 God will hit you hard with the boils of Egypt, hemorrhoids, scabs, and an incurable itch.
28 The LORD will make you go crazy, make you blind, make your mind confused.
28 He'll make you go crazy and blind and senile.
29 You will fumble around at high noon as blind people fumble around in darkness. Your plans won't prosper. Instead, you will be constantly oppressed and taken advantage of without any savior.
29 You'll grope around in the middle of the day like a blind person feeling his way through a lifetime of darkness; you'll never get to where you're going. Not a day will go by that you're not abused and robbed. And no one is going to help you.
30 You might get engaged to a woman, but another man will have sex with her. You might build a house, but you won't get to live in it. You might plant a vineyard, but you won't enjoy it.
30 You'll get engaged to a woman and another man will take her for his mistress; you'll build a house and never live in it; you'll plant a garden and never eat so much as a carrot;
31 Your ox will be slaughtered while you watch, but you won't get to eat any of it. Your donkey will be stolen right out from under you, and it won't come back. Your flocks will be given to your enemies. No one will save you.
31 you'll watch your ox get butchered and not get a single steak from it; your donkey will be stolen from in front of you and you'll never see it again; your sheep will be sent off to your enemies and no one will lift a hand to help you.
32 Your sons and daughters will be given to another nation while you watch; you will long for them constantly, but you won't have the power to do anything about it.
32 Your sons and daughters will be shipped off to foreigners; you'll wear your eyes out looking vainly for them, helpless to do a thing.
33 The produce of your land and all your hard work will be consumed by people you don't know. You will be nothing but oppressed and mistreated constantly.
33 Your crops and everything you work for will be eaten and used by foreigners; you'll spend the rest of your lives abused and knocked around.
34 The sights your eyes see will drive you insane.
34 What you see will drive you crazy.
35 The LORD will strike you with horrible inflammation in your knees and legs, from the sole of your foot to the top of your head. You will be untreatable.
35 God will hit you with painful boils on your knees and legs and no healing or relief from head to foot.
36 The LORD will send you and the king that you appoint over you far away to a nation that neither you nor your ancestors have known. There you will worship other gods made of wood and stone.
36 God will lead you and the king you set over you to a country neither you nor your ancestors have heard of; there you'll worship other gods, no-gods of wood and stone.
37 You will become a horror, fit only for use in proverbs and in insults by all the nations where the LORD drives you.
37 Among all the peoples where God will take you, you'll be treated as a lesson or a proverb - a horror!
38 You might scatter a lot of seed on the field, but you will gather almost nothing because the locusts will eat it all.
38 You'll plant sacks and sacks of seed in the field but get almost nothing - the grasshoppers will devour it.
39 You might plant lots of vineyards and work hard in them, but you won't drink any wine or harvest the grapes because worms will devour them.
39 You'll plant and hoe and prune vineyards but won't drink or put up any wine - the worms will devour them.
40 You might have many olive trees throughout your territories, but you won't cover yourself with their oil because your olive trees will fail.
40 You'll have groves of olive trees everywhere, but you'll have no oil to rub on your face or hands - the olives will have fallen off.
41 You might have sons and daughters, but they won't be yours for long because they will be taken away as prisoners.
41 You'll have sons and daughters but they won't be yours for long - they'll go off to captivity.
42 Crickets will take over all your trees and your soil's produce.
42 Locusts will take over all your trees and crops.
43 The immigrants who live among you will be promoted over you, higher and higher! But you will be demoted, lower and lower!
43 The foreigner who lives among you will climb the ladder, higher and higher, while you go deeper and deeper into the hole.
44 They will lend to you, but you will have nothing to lend to them. They will be the head of things; you will be the tail.
44 He'll lend to you; you won't lend to him. He'll be the head; you'll be the tail.
45 That's how all these curses will come over you, pursuing you, reaching you until you are completely wiped out, because you didn't obey the LORD your God's voice by keeping his commandments and his regulations that he gave you.
45 All these curses are going to come on you. They're going to hunt you down and get you until there's nothing left of you because you didn't obediently listen to the Voice of God, your God, and diligently keep his commandments and guidelines that I commanded you.
46 These things will be a sign and a wonder on you and your descendants forever.
46 The curses will serve as signposts, warnings to your children ever after.
47 Because you didn't serve the LORD your God joyfully and gladly above all else,
47 Because you didn't serve God, your God, out of the joy and goodness of your heart in the great abundance,
48 you will serve your enemies—the ones the LORD will send against you—during famine, drought, nakedness, and total depravation. God will put an iron yoke on your neck until he has wiped you out.
48 you'll have to serve your enemies whom God will send against you. Life will be famine and drought, rags and wretchedness; then he'll put an iron yoke on your neck until he's destroyed you.
49 The LORD will bring a distant nation—one from the far ends of the earth—against you as fast as the eagle flies: a nation that speaks a language you can't understand,
49 Yes, God will raise up a faraway nation against you, swooping down on you like an eagle, a nation whose language you can't understand,
50 a stern nation that doesn't go easy on the very old or show pity to the very young.
50 a mean-faced people, cruel to grandmothers and babies alike.
51 That nation will devour your livestock's offspring and your soil's produce until you yourselves are destroyed because you will have no grain, wine, or oil left—nor any young from your cattle or offspring from your flocks—that is, until that nation annihilates you.
51 They'll ravage the young of your animals and the crops from your fields until you're destroyed. They'll leave nothing behind: no grain, no wine, no oil, no calves, no lambs - and finally, no you.
52 That nation will attack you in all your cities until your high, reinforced walls that you thought were so safe fall down across your entire countryside. That nation will attack you in all your cities throughout the land the LORD your God has given you.
52 They'll lay siege to you while you're huddled behind your town gates. They'll knock those high, proud walls flat, those walls behind which you felt so safe. They'll lay siege to your fortified cities all over the country, this country that God, your God, has given you.
53 You will eat the offspring of your own womb—the flesh of your own sons and daughters, whom the LORD your God gave you—because of the desperate and dire circumstances that your enemy has brought on you.
53 And you'll end up cannibalizing your own sons and daughters that God, your God, has given you. When the suffering from the siege gets extreme, you're going to eat your own babies.
54 Even the most gentle and refined man among you will scowl at his brother or his own dear wife, or the last of his surviving children.
54 The most gentle and caring man among you will turn hard, his eye evil, against his own brother, his cherished wife, and even the rest of his children who are still alive,
55 He won't want to give them any of his children's flesh that he will be eating because he has no other food due to the desperate and dire circumstances that your enemy has brought on you in all your cities.
55 refusing to share with them a scrap of meat from the cannibal child-stew he is eating. He's lost everything, even his humanity, in the suffering of the siege that your enemy mounts against your fortified towns.
56 Even the most gentle and refined woman among you, who is so refined and gentle she wouldn't stomp her foot on the ground, will scowl at her own dear husband, her son, or her daughter—
56 And the most gentle and caring woman among you, a woman who wouldn't step on a wildflower, will turn hard, her eye evil, against her cherished husband, against her son, against her daughter,
57 not wanting to give them any of the afterbirth she pushed out or the babies she bore, because she will be eating them secretly while starving due to the desperate and dire circumstances that your enemy will bring on you in your cities.
57 against even the afterbirth of her newborn infants; she plans to eat them in secret - she does eat them! - because she has lost everything, even her humanity, in the suffering of the siege that your enemy mounts against your fortified towns.
58 If you don't carefully keep all the words of this Instruction that are written in this scroll, by fearing the awesome and glorious name of the LORD your God—
58 If you don't diligently keep all the words of this Revelation written in this book, living in holy awe before This Name glorious and terrible, God, your God,
59 the LORD will overwhelm you and your descendants with severe and chronic afflictions, and with terrible and untreatable sicknesses.
59 then God will pound you with catastrophes, you and your children, huge interminable catastrophes, hideous interminable illnesses.
60 He'll put on you all the Egyptian diseases about which you were so afraid; they will stick to you!
60 He'll bring back and stick you with every old Egyptian malady that once terrorized you.
61 What's more, the LORD will bring on you all the other diseases and plagues that aren't written in this Instruction scroll until you are completely wiped out.
61 And yes, every disease and catastrophe imaginable - things not even written in the Book of this Revelation - God will bring on you until you're destroyed.
62 Once as countless as the stars in the night sky, only a few of you will be left alive—all because you didn't obey the LORD your God's voice.
62 Because you didn't listen obediently to the Voice of God, your God, you'll be left with a few pitiful stragglers in place of the dazzling stars-in-the-heavens multitude you had become.
63 And just as before, the LORD enjoyed doing good things for you and increasing your numbers, now the LORD will enjoy annihilating and destroying you. You will be torn off the very fertile land you are entering to possess.
63 And this is how things will end up: Just as God once enjoyed you, took pleasure in making life good for you, giving you many children, so God will enjoy getting rid of you, clearing you off the Earth. He'll weed you out of the very soil that you are entering in to possess.
64 The LORD will scatter you among every nation, from one end of the earth to the other. There you will serve other gods that neither you nor your ancestors have known—gods of wood and stone.
64 He'll scatter you to the four winds, from one end of the Earth to the other. You'll worship all kinds of other gods, gods neither you nor your parents ever heard of, wood and stone no-gods.
65 Among those nations you will have no rest and no place to call your own. There the LORD will give you an agitated mind, failing eyes, and a depressed spirit.
65 But you won't find a home there, you'll not be able to settle down. God will give you a restless heart, longing eyes, a homesick soul.
66 Your life will seem to dangle before your very eyes. You will be afraid night and day. You won't be able to count on surviving for long.
66 You will live in constant jeopardy, terrified of every shadow, never knowing what you'll meet around the next corner.
67 In the morning you will say: "I wish it was nighttime," but at nighttime you will say, "I wish it was morning"—on account of your tortured mind, which will be terrified, and because of the horrible sights that your eyes will see.
67 In the morning you'll say, "I wish it were evening." In the evening you'll say, "I wish it were morning." Afraid, terrorized at what's coming next, afraid of the unknown, because of the sights you've witnessed.
68 Finally, the LORD will take you back to Egypt in ships, by the route I promised you would never see again. There you will try to sell yourselves as slaves—both male and female—but no one will want to buy you.
68 God will ship you back to Egypt by a road I promised you'd never see again. There you'll offer yourselves for sale, both men and women, as slaves to your enemies. And not a buyer to be found.
