Ecclesiastes 8

GNT 1 Only the wise know what things really mean. Wisdom makes them smile and makes their frowns disappear. NIV 1 Who is like the wise? Who knows the explanation of things? A person’s wisdom brightens their face and changes its hard appearance. GNT 2 Do what the king says, and don't make any rash promises to God. NIV 2 Obey the king’s command, I say, because you took an oath before God. GNT 3 The king can do anything he likes, so depart from his presence; don't stay in such a dangerous place. NIV 3 Do not be in a hurry to leave the king’s presence. Do not stand up for a bad cause, for he will do whatever he pleases. GNT 4 The king acts with authority, and no one can challenge what he does. NIV 4 Since a king’s word is supreme, who can say to him, “What are you doing?” GNT 5 As long as you obey his commands, you are safe, and a wise person knows how and when to do it. NIV 5 Whoever obeys his command will come to no harm, and the wise heart will know the proper time and procedure. GNT 6 There is a right time and a right way to do everything, but we know so little! NIV 6 For there is a proper time and procedure for every matter, though a person may be weighed down by misery. GNT 7 None of us knows what is going to happen, and there is no one to tell us. NIV 7 Since no one knows the future, who can tell someone else what is to come? GNT 8 No one can keep from dying or put off the day of death. That is a battle we cannot escape; we cannot cheat our way out. NIV 8 As no one has power over the wind to contain it, so no one has power over the time of their death. As no one is discharged in time of war, so wickedness will not release those who practice it. GNT 9 I saw all this when I thought about the things that are done in this world, a world where some people have power and others have to suffer under them. NIV 9 All this I saw, as I applied my mind to everything done under the sun. There is a time when a man lords it over others to his own hurt. GNT 10 Yes, I have seen the wicked buried and in their graves, but on the way back from the cemetery people praise them in the very city where they did their evil. It is useless. NIV 10 Then too, I saw the wicked buried—those who used to come and go from the holy place and receive praise in the city where they did this. This too is meaningless. GNT 11 Why do people commit crimes so readily? Because crime is not punished quickly enough. NIV 11 When the sentence for a crime is not quickly carried out, people’s hearts are filled with schemes to do wrong. GNT 12 A sinner may commit a hundred crimes and still live. Oh yes, I know what they say: "If you obey God, everything will be all right, NIV 12 Although a wicked person who commits a hundred crimes may live a long time, I know that it will go better with those who fear God, who are reverent before him. GNT 13 but it will not go well for the wicked. Their life is like a shadow and they will die young, because they do not obey God." NIV 13 Yet because the wicked do not fear God, it will not go well with them, and their days will not lengthen like a shadow. GNT 14 But this is nonsense. Look at what happens in the world: sometimes the righteous get the punishment of the wicked, and the wicked get the reward of the righteous. I say it is useless. NIV 14 There is something else meaningless that occurs on earth: the righteous who get what the wicked deserve, and the wicked who get what the righteous deserve. This too, I say, is meaningless. GNT 15 So I am convinced that we should enjoy ourselves, because the only pleasure we have in this life is eating and drinking and enjoying ourselves. We can at least do this as we labor during the life that God has given us in this world. NIV 15 So I commend the enjoyment of life, because there is nothing better for a person under the sun than to eat and drink and be glad. Then joy will accompany them in their toil all the days of the life God has given them under the sun. GNT 16 Whenever I tried to become wise and learn what goes on in the world, I realized that you could stay awake night and day NIV 16 When I applied my mind to know wisdom and to observe the labor that is done on earth—people getting no sleep day or night— GNT 17 and never be able to understand what God is doing. However hard you try, you will never find out. The wise may claim to know, but they don't. NIV 17 then I saw all that God has done. No one can comprehend what goes on under the sun. Despite all their efforts to search it out, no one can discover its meaning. Even if the wise claim they know, they cannot really comprehend it.
