1 The word of the LORD came again unto me, saying,
1 The word of the LORD came to me:
2 Now, thou son of man, raise up lamentations upon Tyre.
2 “Son of man, take up a lament concerning Tyre.
3 And say unto Tyre, O thou that dwelleth at the ports of the sea, <em>who art</em> a merchant of the people for many isles, Thus hath the Lord GOD said; O Tyre, thou hast said, I <em>am</em> of perfect beauty.
3 Say to Tyre, situated at the gateway to the sea, merchant of peoples on many coasts, ‘This is what the Sovereign LORD says: “ ‘You say, Tyre, “I am perfect in beauty.”
4 In the heart of the seas are thy border; thy builders have completed thy beauty.
4 Your domain was on the high seas; your builders brought your beauty to perfection.
5 They have made all thy <em>ship</em> boards of fir trees of Senir; they have taken cedars from Lebanon to make masts for thee.
5 They made all your timbers of juniper from Senir ; they took a cedar from Lebanon to make a mast for you.
6 <em>Of</em> the oaks of Bashan they have made thine oars; the company of the Ashurites have made thy benches <em>of</em> ivory, <em>brought</em> out of the isles of Chittim.
6 Of oaks from Bashan they made your oars; of cypress wood from the coasts of Cyprus they made your deck, adorned with ivory.
7 Of fine linen with broidered work from Egypt was thy curtain, that it might serve to be thy sail; {Heb. banner}; of blue and purple from the isles of Elishah was thy pavilion.
7 Fine embroidered linen from Egypt was your sail and served as your banner; your awnings were of blue and purple from the coasts of Elishah.
8 The inhabitants of Zidon and Arvad were thy rowers; thy wise <em>men</em>, O Tyre, were in thee; they were thy pilots.
8 Men of Sidon and Arvad were your oarsmen; your skilled men, Tyre, were aboard as your sailors.
9 The elders of Gebal and the wise <em>men</em> thereof were in thee to repair thy breaches: all the galleys of the sea with their rowers were in thee to negotiate thy business dealings.
9 Veteran craftsmen of Byblos were on board as shipwrights to caulk your seams. All the ships of the sea and their sailors came alongside to trade for your wares.
10 Those of Persia and of Lud and of Africa were in thine army, thy men of war: they hung the shield and helmet in thee; they extolled thy beauty.
10 “ ‘Men of Persia, Lydia and Put served as soldiers in your army. They hung their shields and helmets on your walls, bringing you splendor.
11 The sons of Arvad with thine army <em>were</em> upon thy walls round about, and the Gammadims were in thy towers: they hung their shields upon thy walls round about; they completed thy beauty.
11 Men of Arvad and Helek guarded your walls on every side; men of Gammad were in your towers. They hung their shields around your walls; they brought your beauty to perfection.
12 Tarshish <em>was</em> thy market by reason of the multitude of all <em>thy</em> riches in silver, iron, tin, and lead; they traded in thy fairs.
12 “ ‘Tarshish did business with you because of your great wealth of goods; they exchanged silver, iron, tin and lead for your merchandise.
13 Greece, Tubal, and Meshech, thy merchants, with the soul of men and with vessels of brass; they traded in thy fairs.
13 “ ‘Greece, Tubal and Meshek did business with you; they traded human beings and articles of bronze for your wares.
14 Those of the house of Togarmah traded in thy fairs with horses and horsemen and mules.
14 “ ‘Men of Beth Togarmah exchanged chariot horses, cavalry horses and mules for your merchandise.
15 The sons of Dedan <em>were</em> thy merchants; many isles <em>took</em> merchandise from thy hand: they brought thee <em>for</em> a present horns of ivory and peacocks.
15 “ ‘The men of Rhodes traded with you, and many coastlands were your customers; they paid you with ivory tusks and ebony.
16 Syria <em>was</em> thy merchant by reason of the multitude of the wares of thy making: they traded in thy fairs with rubies and purple and broidered work and fine linen and coral and pearls.
16 “ ‘Aram did business with you because of your many products; they exchanged turquoise, purple fabric, embroidered work, fine linen, coral and rubies for your merchandise.
17 Judah, and the land of Israel; they <em>were</em> thy merchants: they traded in thy market with wheat, Minnith and Pannag and honey and oil and balm.
17 “ ‘Judah and Israel traded with you; they exchanged wheat from Minnith and confections, honey, olive oil and balm for your wares.
18 Damascus <em>was</em> thy merchant in the multitude of the wares of thy making, for the abundance of all riches, with wine of Helbon and white wool.
18 “ ‘Damascus did business with you because of your many products and great wealth of goods. They offered wine from Helbon, wool from Zahar
19 Dan also and Greece and Mozel traded in thy fairs bright iron, cassia, and calamus.
19 and casks of wine from Izal in exchange for your wares: wrought iron, cassia and calamus.
20 Dedan <em>was</em> thy merchant in precious cloth for chariots.
20 “ ‘Dedan traded in saddle blankets with you.
21 Arabia and all the princes of Kedar, merchants of thy strength in lambs and rams and he goats: in these <em>they were</em> thy merchants.
21 “ ‘Arabia and all the princes of Kedar were your customers; they did business with you in lambs, rams and goats.
22 The merchants of Sheba and Raamah; they <em>were</em> thy merchants: they traded in thy fairs with the chief of all spices and with all precious stones and gold.
22 “ ‘The merchants of Sheba and Raamah traded with you; for your merchandise they exchanged the finest of all kinds of spices and precious stones, and gold.
23 Haran and Canneh and Eden, the merchants of Sheba, Asshur, <em>and</em> Chilmad <em>were</em> in thy market.
23 “ ‘Harran, Kanneh and Eden and merchants of Sheba, Ashur and Kilmad traded with you.
24 These, thy merchants, negotiated with thee in all sorts <em>of things</em>: in blue robes and broidered work and in chests of rich apparel, bound with cords and made of cedar, among thy merchandise.
24 In your marketplace they traded with you beautiful garments, blue fabric, embroidered work and multicolored rugs with cords twisted and tightly knotted.
25 The ships of Tarshish, thy squadrons, went forth on thy behalf: and thou wast full, and wast multiplied greatly in the midst of the seas.
25 “ ‘The ships of Tarshish serve as carriers for your wares. You are filled with heavy cargo as you sail the sea.
26 In many waters they overcame thy rowers; the east wind has broken thee in the midst of the seas.
26 Your oarsmen take you out to the high seas. But the east wind will break you to pieces far out at sea.
27 Thy riches, and thy markets, thy business, thy rowers, and thy pilots, those that repair thy breaches, and the agents of thy business, and all thy men of war, that <em>are</em> in thee, with all thy company which <em>is</em> in the midst of thee, shall fall into the midst of the seas in the day of thy ruin.
27 Your wealth, merchandise and wares, your mariners, sailors and shipwrights, your merchants and all your soldiers, and everyone else on board will sink into the heart of the sea on the day of your shipwreck.
28 The suburbs shall shake at the sound of the cry of thy pilots.
28 The shorelands will quake when your sailors cry out.
29 And all that handle the oar, the rowers, <em>and</em> all the pilots of the sea, shall come down from their ships; they shall stand upon the land
29 All who handle the oars will abandon their ships; the mariners and all the sailors will stand on the shore.
30 and shall cause their voice to be heard upon thee and shall cry bitterly and shall cast up dust upon their heads; they shall wallow themselves in the ashes.
30 They will raise their voice and cry bitterly over you; they will sprinkle dust on their heads and roll in ashes.
31 And they shall pull out their hair for thee and gird themselves with sackcloth, and they shall weep for thee with bitterness of soul <em>and</em> bitter wailings.
31 They will shave their heads because of you and will put on sackcloth. They will weep over you with anguish of soul and with bitter mourning.
32 And in their wailing they shall take up a lamentation for thee and lament over thee, <em>saying</em>, Who <em>is</em> like Tyre, like the destroyed in the midst of the sea?
32 As they wail and mourn over you, they will take up a lament concerning you: “Who was ever silenced like Tyre, surrounded by the sea?”
33 When thy wares went forth out of the seas, thou didst fill many peoples; thou didst enrich the kings of the earth with the multitude of thy riches and of thy contracts.
33 When your merchandise went out on the seas, you satisfied many nations; with your great wealth and your wares you enriched the kings of the earth.
34 In the time <em>when</em> thou shalt be broken by the seas in the depths of the waters thy commerce and all thy company in the midst of thee shall fall.
34 Now you are shattered by the sea in the depths of the waters; your wares and all your company have gone down with you.
35 All the inhabitants of the isles shall be astonished at thee, and their kings shall be sore afraid; they shall be troubled in <em>their</em> countenance.
35 All who live in the coastlands are appalled at you; their kings shudder with horror and their faces are distorted with fear.
36 The merchants among the peoples shall hiss at thee; thou shalt be a terror and never <em>shalt be</em> any more.
36 The merchants among the nations scoff at you; you have come to a horrible end and will be no more.’ ”
