1 Abraham engaña a Abimelec<br />Abraham se trasladó hacia el sur, al Neguev, y vivió un tiempo entre Cades y Shur; luego siguió hasta Gerar. Mientras vivía allí como extranjero,

Now Abraham moved on from there into the region of the Negev and lived between Kadesh and Shur. For a while he stayed in Gerar,
2 Abraham presentó a su esposa, Sara, diciendo: «Ella es mi hermana». Entonces el rey Abimelec de Gerar mandó llamar a Sara e hizo que la trajeran ante él a su palacio.

and there Abraham said of his wife Sarah, “She is my sister.” Then Abimelek king of Gerar sent for Sarah and took her.
3 Esa noche Dios se le apareció a Abimelec en un sueño y le dijo:<br />—Eres hombre muerto, porque esa mujer que has tomado, ¡ya está casada!

But God came to Abimelek in a dream one night and said to him, “You are as good as dead because of the woman you have taken; she is a married woman.”
4 Sin embargo, Abimelec todavía no había dormido con ella, así que dijo:<br />—Señor, ¿destruirás a una nación inocente?

Now Abimelek had not gone near her, so he said, “Lord, will you destroy an innocent nation?
5 ¿Acaso no me dijo Abraham: “Ella es mi hermana”? Y ella misma dijo: “Sí, él es mi hermano”. ¡Yo he actuado con total inocencia! Mis manos están limpias.

Did he not say to me, ‘She is my sister,’ and didn’t she also say, ‘He is my brother’? I have done this with a clear conscience and clean hands.”
6 En el sueño, Dios respondió:<br />—Sí, yo sé que tú eres inocente. Por eso no permití que pecaras contra mí ni dejé que la tocaras.

Then God said to him in the dream, “Yes, I know you did this with a clear conscience, and so I have kept you from sinning against me. That is why I did not let you touch her.
7 Ahora devuelve la mujer a su esposo; y él orará por ti, porque es profeta. Entonces vivirás; pero si no la devuelves, puedes estar seguro de que tú y todo tu pueblo morirán.

Now return the man’s wife, for he is a prophet, and he will pray for you and you will live. But if you do not return her, you may be sure that you and all who belong to you will die.”
8 A la mañana siguiente, Abimelec se levantó temprano y enseguida reunió a todos sus siervos. Cuando les dijo a sus hombres lo que había ocurrido, ellos quedaron aterrados.

Early the next morning Abimelek summoned all his officials, and when he told them all that had happened, they were very much afraid.
9 Entonces Abimelec mandó llamar a Abraham.<br />—¿Qué nos has hecho? —preguntó—. ¿Qué delito he cometido que merezca un trato como este, que nos haces culpables a mí y a mi reino de este gran pecado? ¡Nadie debería hacer jamás lo que tú has hecho!

Then Abimelek called Abraham in and said, “What have you done to us? How have I wronged you that you have brought such great guilt upon me and my kingdom? You have done things to me that should never be done.”
10 ¿Qué te llevó a cometer semejante acto?

And Abimelek asked Abraham, “What was your reason for doing this?”
11 Abraham contestó:<br />—Yo pensé: “Este es un lugar donde no hay temor de Dios. Ellos querrán tener a mi esposa y me matarán para conseguirla”.

Abraham replied, “I said to myself, ‘There is surely no fear of God in this place, and they will kill me because of my wife.’
12 Ella de verdad es mi hermana, pues ambos tenemos el mismo padre, aunque diferentes madres; y yo me casé con ella.

Besides, she really is my sister, the daughter of my father though not of my mother; and she became my wife.
13 Cuando Dios me llamó a abandonar la casa de mi padre y a viajar de lugar en lugar, le dije a ella: “Hazme un favor, por donde vayamos, dile a la gente que yo soy tu hermano”.

And when God had me wander from my father’s household, I said to her, ‘This is how you can show your love to me: Everywhere we go, say of me, “He is my brother.” ’ ”
14 Entonces Abimelec tomó algunas de sus ovejas y cabras, ganado y también siervos y siervas, y entregó todo a Abraham. Además le devolvió a su esposa, Sara.

Then Abimelek brought sheep and cattle and male and female slaves and gave them to Abraham, and he returned Sarah his wife to him.
15 Después Abimelec le dijo:<br />—Revisa mis tierras y escoge cualquier lugar donde te gustaría vivir.

And Abimelek said, “My land is before you; live wherever you like.”
16 Y le dijo a Sara:<br />—Mira, le entrego a tu “hermano” mil piezas de plata<br /> en presencia de todos estos testigos, para compensarte por cualquier daño que pudiera haberte causado. Esto resolverá todo reclamo contra mí, y tu reputación quedará limpia.

To Sarah he said, “I am giving your brother a thousand shekels of silver. This is to cover the offense against you before all who are with you; you are completely vindicated.”
17 Entonces Abraham oró a Dios, y Dios sanó a Abimelec, a su esposa y a sus siervas para que pudieran tener hijos.

Then Abraham prayed to God, and God healed Abimelek, his wife and his female slaves so they could have children again,
18 Pues el Señor<br /> había hecho que todas las mujeres quedaran estériles debido a lo que pasó con Sara, la esposa de Abraham.

for the LORD had kept all the women in Abimelek’s household from conceiving because of Abraham’s wife Sarah.
