1 And Dinah, the daughter of Leah, which she gave birth unto Jacob, went out to see the daughters of the land.

Now Dinah, the daughter Leah had borne to Jacob, went out to visit the women of the land.
2 And when Shechem, the son of Hamor the Hivite, prince of the country, saw her, he took her and lay with her and defiled her.

When Shechem son of Hamor the Hivite, the ruler of that area, saw her, he took her and raped her.
3 And his soul was joined unto Dinah, the daughter of Jacob, and he fell in love with the damsel and spoke unto her heart.

His heart was drawn to Dinah daughter of Jacob; he loved the young woman and spoke tenderly to her.
4 And Shechem spoke unto his father Hamor, saying, Get me this damsel to wife.

And Shechem said to his father Hamor, “Get me this girl as my wife.”
5 And Jacob heard that he had defiled Dinah, his daughter; now his sons were with his cattle in the field, and Jacob remained silent until they were come.

When Jacob heard that his daughter Dinah had been defiled, his sons were in the fields with his livestock; so he did nothing about it until they came home.
6 And Hamor, the father of Shechem, went out unto Jacob to speak with him.

Then Shechem’s father Hamor went out to talk with Jacob.
7 And the sons of Jacob came out of the field when they heard <em>it</em>; and the men were grieved, and they were very wroth because he had wrought folly in Israel in lying with Jacob’s daughter, <em>a</em> thing which ought not to be done.

Meanwhile, Jacob’s sons had come in from the fields as soon as they heard what had happened. They were shocked and furious, because Shechem had done an outrageous thing in Israel by sleeping with Jacob’s daughter—a thing that should not be done.
8 And Hamor spoke with them, saying, The soul of my son Shechem is joined to your daughter; I pray you give her to him as wife.

But Hamor said to them, “My son Shechem has his heart set on your daughter. Please give her to him as his wife.
9 And make ye marriages with us <em>and</em> give your daughters unto us and take our daughters unto you.

Intermarry with us; give us your daughters and take our daughters for yourselves.
10 And ye shall dwell with us, and the land shall be before you; dwell and trade ye therein and take you possessions therein.

You can settle among us; the land is open to you. Live in it, trade in it, and acquire property in it.”
11 And Shechem also said unto her father and unto her brethren, Let me find grace in your eyes, and what ye shall say unto me I will give.

Then Shechem said to Dinah’s father and brothers, “Let me find favor in your eyes, and I will give you whatever you ask.
12 Ask me for as much dowry and gift as ye <em>desire</em>, and I will give according as ye shall say unto me; but give me the damsel to wife.

Make the price for the bride and the gift I am to bring as great as you like, and I’ll pay whatever you ask me. Only give me the young woman as my wife.”
13 And the sons of Jacob answered Shechem and Hamor his father deceitfully and talked because he had defiled Dinah their sister:

Because their sister Dinah had been defiled, Jacob’s sons replied deceitfully as they spoke to Shechem and his father Hamor.
14 And they said unto them, We cannot do this thing, to give our sister to one that is uncircumcised, for among us that <em>is</em> a reproach.

They said to them, “We can’t do such a thing; we can’t give our sister to a man who is not circumcised. That would be a disgrace to us.
15 But with this condition we will consent unto you: If ye will become as we <em>are</em> that every male of you be circumcised,

We will enter into an agreement with you on one condition only: that you become like us by circumcising all your males.
16 then we will give our daughters unto you, and we will take your daughters to us, and we will dwell with you, and we will become one people.

Then we will give you our daughters and take your daughters for ourselves. We’ll settle among you and become one people with you.
17 But if ye will not hearken unto us, to be circumcised, then we will take our daughter, and we will be gone.

But if you will not agree to be circumcised, we’ll take our sister and go.”
18 And their words pleased Hamor and Shechem, Hamor’s son.

Their proposal seemed good to Hamor and his son Shechem.
19 And the young man deferred not to do the thing, because he had delight in Jacob’s daughter and he <em>was</em> the most honourable of all the house of his father.

The young man, who was the most honored of all his father’s family, lost no time in doing what they said, because he was delighted with Jacob’s daughter.
20 Then Hamor and Shechem, his son, came unto the gate of their city and communed with the men of their city, saying,

So Hamor and his son Shechem went to the gate of their city to speak to the men of their city.
21 These men <em>are</em> peaceable with us; therefore let them dwell in the land and trade therein; for the land, behold, <em>it</em> is large enough for them; let us take their daughters to us for wives, and let us give them our daughters.

“These men are friendly toward us,” they said. “Let them live in our land and trade in it; the land has plenty of room for them. We can marry their daughters and they can marry ours.
22 Only with this condition will these men consent to dwell with us that we may be one people: if every male among us be circumcised as they <em>are</em> circumcised.

But the men will agree to live with us as one people only on the condition that our males be circumcised, as they themselves are.
23 <em>Shall</em> not their livestock and their substance and every beast of theirs <em>be</em> ours? Only let us consent unto them, and they will dwell with us.

Won’t their livestock, their property and all their other animals become ours? So let us agree to their terms, and they will settle among us.”
24 And unto Hamor and unto Shechem, his son, hearkened all that went out of the gate of his city; and every male was circumcised, all that went out of the gate of his city.

All the men who went out of the city gate agreed with Hamor and his son Shechem, and every male in the city was circumcised.
25 And it came to pass on the third day, when they were sore that two of the sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi, Dinah’s brethren, took each man his sword and came upon the city boldly and slew all the males.

Three days later, while all of them were still in pain, two of Jacob’s sons, Simeon and Levi, Dinah’s brothers, took their swords and attacked the unsuspecting city, killing every male.
26 And they slew Hamor and Shechem, his son, with the edge of the sword and took Dinah out of Shechem’s house, and went out.

They put Hamor and his son Shechem to the sword and took Dinah from Shechem’s house and left.
27 The sons of Jacob came upon the slain and spoiled the city because they had defiled their sister.

The sons of Jacob came upon the dead bodies and looted the city where their sister had been defiled.
28 They took their sheep and their oxen and their asses and that which <em>was</em> in the city and that which <em>was</em> in the field

They seized their flocks and herds and donkeys and everything else of theirs in the city and out in the fields.
29 and all their wealth and all their little ones and their wives they took captive and spoiled even all that <em>was</em> in the house.

They carried off all their wealth and all their women and children, taking as plunder everything in the houses.
30 And Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, Ye have troubled me to make me to stink among the inhabitants of the land, among the Canaanites and the Perizzites; and I <em>being</em> few in number, they shall gather themselves together against me and slay me; and I shall be destroyed, I and my house.

Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, “You have brought trouble on me by making me obnoxious to the Canaanites and Perizzites, the people living in this land. We are few in number, and if they join forces against me and attack me, I and my household will be destroyed.”
31 And they said, Should he deal with our sister as with a harlot?

But they replied, “Should he have treated our sister like a prostitute?”
