Hebrews 2

RSV 1 Therefore we must pay the closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it. NIV 1 We must pay the most careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away. RSV 2 For if the message declared by angels was valid and every transgression or disobedience received a just retribution, NIV 2 For since the message spoken through angels was binding, and every violation and disobedience received its just punishment, RSV 3 how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? It was declared at first by the Lord, and it was attested to us by those who heard him, NIV 3 how shall we escape if we ignore so great a salvation? This salvation, which was first announced by the Lord, was confirmed to us by those who heard him. RSV 4 while God also bore witness by signs and wonders and various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his own will. NIV 4 God also testified to it by signs, wonders and various miracles, and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will. RSV 5 For it was not to angels that God subjected the world to come, of which we are speaking. NIV 5 It is not to angels that he has subjected the world to come, about which we are speaking. RSV 6 It has been testified somewhere, "What is man that thou art mindful of him, or the son of man, that thou carest for him? NIV 6 But there is a place where someone has testified: “What is mankind that you are mindful of them, a son of man that you care for him? RSV 7 Thou didst make him for a little while lower than the angels, thou hast crowned him with glory and honor, NIV 7 You made them a little lower than the angels; you crowned them with glory and honor RSV 8 putting everything in subjection under his feet." Now in putting everything in subjection to him, he left nothing outside his control. As it is, we do not yet see everything in subjection to him. NIV 8 and put everything under their feet.”In putting everything under them, God left nothing that is not subject to them. Yet at present we do not see everything subject to them. RSV 9 But we see Jesus, who for a little while was made lower than the angels, crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for every one. NIV 9 But we do see Jesus, who was made lower than the angels for a little while, now crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone. RSV 10 For it was fitting that he, for whom and by whom all things exist, in bringing many sons to glory, should make the pioneer of their salvation perfect through suffering. NIV 10 In bringing many sons and daughters to glory, it was fitting that God, for whom and through whom everything exists, should make the pioneer of their salvation perfect through what he suffered. RSV 11 For he who sanctifies and those who are sanctified have all one origin. That is why he is not ashamed to call them brethren, NIV 11 Both the one who makes people holy and those who are made holy are of the same family. So Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers and sisters. RSV 12 saying, "I will proclaim thy name to my brethren, in the midst of the congregation I will praise thee." NIV 12 He says, “I will declare your name to my brothers and sisters; in the assembly I will sing your praises.” RSV 13 And again, "I will put my trust in him." And again, "Here am I, and the children God has given me." NIV 13 And again, “I will put my trust in him.”And again he says, “Here am I, and the children God has given me.” RSV 14 Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same nature, that through death he might destroy him who has the power of death, that is, the devil, NIV 14 Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might break the power of him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil— RSV 15 and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong bondage. NIV 15 and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death. RSV 16 For surely it is not with angels that he is concerned but with the descendants of Abraham. NIV 16 For surely it is not angels he helps, but Abraham’s descendants. RSV 17 Therefore he had to be made like his brethren in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make expiation for the sins of the people. NIV 17 For this reason he had to be made like them, fully human in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people. RSV 18 For because he himself has suffered and been tempted, he is able to help those who are tempted. NIV 18 Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.
