Hosea 11

NRS 1 When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called my son. NIV 1 “When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called my son. NRS 2 The more I called them, the more they went from me; they kept sacrificing to the Baals, and offering incense to idols. NIV 2 But the more they were called, the more they went away from me.They sacrificed to the Baals and they burned incense to images. NRS 3 Yet it was I who taught Ephraim to walk, I took them up in my arms; but they did not know that I healed them. NIV 3 It was I who taught Ephraim to walk, taking them by the arms; but they did not realize it was I who healed them. NRS 4 I led them with cords of human kindness, with bands of love. I was to them like those who lift infants to their cheeks. I bent down to them and fed them. NIV 4 I led them with cords of human kindness, with ties of love. To them I was like one who lifts a little child to the cheek, and I bent down to feed them. NRS 5 They shall return to the land of Egypt, and Assyria shall be their king, because they have refused to return to me. NRS 6 The sword rages in their cities, it consumes their oracle-priests, and devours because of their schemes. NIV 6 A sword will flash in their cities; it will devour their false prophets and put an end to their plans. NRS 7 My people are bent on turning away from me. To the Most High they call, but he does not raise them up at all. NIV 7 My people are determined to turn from me. Even though they call me God Most High, I will by no means exalt them. NRS 8 How can I give you up, Ephraim? How can I hand you over, O Israel? How can I make you like Admah? How can I treat you like Zeboiim? My heart recoils within me; my compassion grows warm and tender. NIV 8 “How can I give you up, Ephraim? How can I hand you over, Israel? How can I treat you like Admah? How can I make you like Zeboyim? My heart is changed within me; all my compassion is aroused. NRS 9 I will not execute my fierce anger; I will not again destroy Ephraim; for I am God and no mortal, the Holy One in your midst, and I will not come in wrath. NIV 9 I will not carry out my fierce anger, nor will I devastate Ephraim again. For I am God, and not a man— the Holy One among you. I will not come against their cities. NRS 10 They shall go after the Lord, who roars like a lion; when he roars, his children shall come trembling from the west. NIV 10 They will follow the LORD; he will roar like a lion. When he roars, his children will come trembling from the west. NRS 11 They shall come trembling like birds from Egypt, and like doves from the land of Assyria; and I will return them to their homes, says the Lord. NIV 11 They will come from Egypt, trembling like sparrows, from Assyria, fluttering like doves. I will settle them in their homes,” declares the LORD. NRS 12 Ephraim has surrounded me with lies, and the house of Israel with deceit; but Judah still walks with God, and is faithful to the Holy One. NIV 12 Ephraim has surrounded me with lies, Israel with deceit. And Judah is unruly against God, even against the faithful Holy One.
