Hosea 2

CEB 1 Say to your brother, My People, and to your sister, Compassion: NIV 1 “Say of your brothers, ‘My people,’ and of your sisters, ‘My loved one.’ CEB 2 Level a charge against your mother; plead with her! She is not my wife, and I am not her husband. Let her remove prostitution from her presence, and adultery from between her breasts, NIV 2 “Rebuke your mother, rebuke her, for she is not my wife, and I am not her husband. Let her remove the adulterous look from her face and the unfaithfulness from between her breasts. CEB 3 or else I will strip her naked and expose her as on the day she was born. I will make her like a desert, and turn her into a dry land, and make her die of thirst. NIV 3 Otherwise I will strip her naked and make her as bare as on the day she was born; I will make her like a desert, turn her into a parched land, and slay her with thirst. CEB 4 I will also have no compassion on her children because they are children of prostitution. NIV 4 I will not show my love to her children, because they are the children of adultery. CEB 5 Their mother has played the prostitute; she who conceived them has behaved shamefully. She said, "I will seek out my lovers; they give me my bread and my water, my wool and my linen cloth, my oil and my drink." NIV 5 Their mother has been unfaithful and has conceived them in disgrace. She said, ‘I will go after my lovers, who give me my food and my water, my wool and my linen, my olive oil and my drink.’ CEB 6 Therefore, I will line her path with thorns; and I will build a wall against her, so that she can't find her paths. NIV 6 Therefore I will block her path with thornbushes; I will wall her in so that she cannot find her way. CEB 7 She will go after her lovers, but she won't catch up with them; she will seek them, but she won't find them. Then she will say, "I will return to my first husband, for I had it better then than now." NIV 7 She will chase after her lovers but not catch them; she will look for them but not find them. Then she will say, ‘I will go back to my husband as at first, for then I was better off than now.’ CEB 8 She didn't know that I gave her the corn, the new wine, and the fresh oil, and that I gave her much silver, and gold that they used for Baal. NIV 8 She has not acknowledged that I was the one who gave her the grain, the new wine and oil, who lavished on her the silver and gold— which they used for Baal. CEB 9 So now I will take back my corn in its time, and my wine in its season; and I will take away my wool and my linen cloth, which were to cover her nakedness. NIV 9 “Therefore I will take away my grain when it ripens, and my new wine when it is ready. I will take back my wool and my linen, intended to cover her naked body. CEB 10 Now I will uncover her nakedness in plain view of her lovers, and no one will rescue her from me. NIV 10 So now I will expose her lewdness before the eyes of her lovers; no one will take her out of my hands. CEB 11 I will end all her religious celebrations, her festivals, her new moons, her Sabbath days, and all her sacred seasons. NIV 11 I will stop all her celebrations: her yearly festivals, her New Moons, her Sabbath days—all her appointed festivals. CEB 12 I will destroy her vines and her fig trees, of which she said, "These are my pay, which my lovers have given to me." I will change them into a forest, and the wild animals will eat them. NIV 12 I will ruin her vines and her fig trees, which she said were her pay from her lovers; I will make them a thicket, and wild animals will devour them. CEB 13 I will punish her for the days dedicated to the Baals, when she offered sweet-smelling sacrifices to them and dressed herself up with rings and jewelry, and went after her lovers, and forgot me, says the LORD. NIV 13 I will punish her for the days she burned incense to the Baals; she decked herself with rings and jewelry, and went after her lovers, but me she forgot,” declares the LORD. CEB 14 Therefore, I will charm her, and bring her into the desert, and speak tenderly to her heart. NIV 14 “Therefore I am now going to allure her; I will lead her into the wilderness and speak tenderly to her. CEB 15 From there I will give her vineyards, and make the Achor Valley a door of hope. There she will respond to me as in the days of her youth, like the time when she came out of the land of Egypt. NIV 15 There I will give her back her vineyards, and will make the Valley of Achor a door of hope. There she will respond as in the days of her youth, as in the day she came up out of Egypt. CEB 16 On that day, says the LORD, you will call me, "My husband," and no longer will you call me, "My Lord." NIV 16 “In that day,” declares the LORD, “you will call me ‘my husband’; you will no longer call me ‘my master. ’ CEB 17 I will take away the names of the Baals from her mouth, and they will not be mentioned by name anymore. NIV 17 I will remove the names of the Baals from her lips; no longer will their names be invoked. CEB 18 On that day, I will make a covenant for them with the wild animals, the birds in the sky, and the creeping creatures of the fertile ground. I will do away with the bow, the sword, and war from the land; I will make you lie down in safety. NIV 18 In that day I will make a covenant for them with the beasts of the field, the birds in the sky and the creatures that move along the ground. Bow and sword and battle I will abolish from the land, so that all may lie down in safety. CEB 19 I will take you for my wife forever; I will take you for my wife in righteousness and in justice, in devoted love, and in mercy. NIV 19 I will betroth you to me forever; I will betroth you in righteousness and justice, in love and compassion. CEB 20 I will take you for my wife in faithfulness; and you will know the LORD. NIV 20 I will betroth you in faithfulness, and you will acknowledge the LORD. CEB 21 On that day I will answer, says the LORD. I will answer the heavens and they will answer the earth. NIV 21 “In that day I will respond,” declares the LORD— “I will respond to the skies, and they will respond to the earth; CEB 22 The earth will answer the corn, the new wine, and the fresh oil, and they will answer Jezreel; NIV 22 and the earth will respond to the grain, the new wine and the olive oil, and they will respond to Jezreel. CEB 23 I will sow him for myself in the land; and I will have compassion on No Compassion, and I will say to Not My People, "You are my people"; and he will say, "You are my God." NIV 23 I will plant her for myself in the land; I will show my love to the one I called ‘Not my loved one. ’ I will say to those called ‘Not my people, ’ ‘You are my people’; and they will say, ‘You are my God.’ ”
