Isaiah 24

CSB 1 Look, the Lord is stripping the earth bare and making it desolate. He will twist its surface and scatter its inhabitants: NIV 1 See, the LORD is going to lay waste the earth and devastate it; he will ruin its face and scatter its inhabitants— CSB 2 people and priest alike, servant and master, female servant and mistress, buyer and seller, lender and borrower, creditor and debtor. NIV 2 it will be the same for priest as for people, for the master as for his servant, for the mistress as for her servant, for seller as for buyer, for borrower as for lender, for debtor as for creditor. CSB 3 The earth will be stripped completely bare and will be totally plundered, for the Lord has spoken this message. NIV 3 The earth will be completely laid waste and totally plundered. The LORD has spoken this word. CSB 4 The earth mourns and withers; the world wastes away and withers; the exalted people of the earth waste away. NIV 4 The earth dries up and withers, the world languishes and withers, the heavens languish with the earth. CSB 5 The earth is polluted by its inhabitants, for they have transgressed teachings, overstepped decrees, and broken the everlasting covenant. NIV 5 The earth is defiled by its people; they have disobeyed the laws, violated the statutes and broken the everlasting covenant. CSB 6 Therefore a curse has consumed the earth, and its inhabitants have become guilty; the earth's inhabitants have been burned, and only a few survive. NIV 6 Therefore a curse consumes the earth; its people must bear their guilt. Therefore earth’s inhabitants are burned up, and very few are left. CSB 7 The new wine mourns; the vine withers. All the carousers now groan. NIV 7 The new wine dries up and the vine withers; all the merrymakers groan. CSB 8 The joyful tambourines have ceased. The noise of the jubilant has stopped. The joyful lyre has ceased. NIV 8 The joyful timbrels are stilled, the noise of the revelers has stopped, the joyful harp is silent. CSB 9 They no longer sing and drink wine; beer is bitter to those who drink it. NIV 9 No longer do they drink wine with a song; the beer is bitter to its drinkers. CSB 10 The city of chaos is shattered; every house is closed to entry. NIV 10 The ruined city lies desolate; the entrance to every house is barred. CSB 11 In the streets they cry for wine. All joy grows dark; earth's rejoicing goes into exile. NIV 11 In the streets they cry out for wine; all joy turns to gloom, all joyful sounds are banished from the earth. CSB 12 Only desolation remains in the city; its gate has collapsed in ruins. NIV 12 The city is left in ruins, its gate is battered to pieces. CSB 13 For this is how it will be on earth among the nations: like a harvested olive tree, like a gleaning after a grape harvest. NIV 13 So will it be on the earth and among the nations, as when an olive tree is beaten, or as when gleanings are left after the grape harvest. CSB 14 They raise their voices, they sing out; they proclaim in the west the majesty of the Lord. NIV 14 They raise their voices, they shout for joy; from the west they acclaim the LORD’s majesty. CSB 15 Therefore in the east honor the Lord! In the islands of the west [honor] the name of the Lord, the God of Israel. NIV 15 Therefore in the east give glory to the LORD; exalt the name of the LORD, the God of Israel, in the islands of the sea. CSB 16 From the ends of the earth we hear songs: The Splendor of the Righteous One. But I said, "I waste away! I waste away! Woe is me." The treacherous act treacherously; the treacherous deal very treacherously. NIV 16 From the ends of the earth we hear singing: “Glory to the Righteous One.” But I said, “I waste away, I waste away! Woe to me! The treacherous betray! With treachery the treacherous betray!” CSB 17 Terror, pit, and snare [await] you who dwell on the earth. NIV 17 Terror and pit and snare await you, people of the earth. CSB 18 Whoever flees at the sound of terror will fall into a pit, and whoever escapes from the pit will be caught in a snare. For the windows are opened from above, and the foundations of the earth are shaken. NIV 18 Whoever flees at the sound of terror will fall into a pit; whoever climbs out of the pit will be caught in a snare. The floodgates of the heavens are opened, the foundations of the earth shake. CSB 19 The earth is completely devastated; the earth is split open; the earth is violently shaken. NIV 19 The earth is broken up, the earth is split asunder, the earth is violently shaken. CSB 20 The earth staggers like a drunkard and sways like a hut. Earth's rebellion weighs it down, and it falls, never to rise again. NIV 20 The earth reels like a drunkard, it sways like a hut in the wind; so heavy upon it is the guilt of its rebellion that it falls—never to rise again. CSB 21 On that day the Lord will punish the host of heaven above and kings of the earth below. NIV 21 In that day the LORD will punish the powers in the heavens above and the kings on the earth below. CSB 22 They will be gathered together like prisoners in a pit. They will be confined to a dungeon; after many days they will be punished. NIV 22 They will be herded together like prisoners bound in a dungeon; they will be shut up in prison and be punished after many days. CSB 23 The moon will be put to shame and the sun disgraced, because the Lord of Hosts will reign as king on Mount Zion in Jerusalem, and He will [display His] glory in the presence of His elders. NIV 23 The moon will be dismayed, the sun ashamed; for the LORD Almighty will reign on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem, and before its elders—with great glory.
