Isaiah 48

HNV

MSG

1 Hear you this, house of Ya`akov, who are called by the name of Yisra'el, and are come forth out of the waters of Yehudah; who swear by the name of the LORD, and make mention of the God of Yisra'el, but not in truth, nor in righteousness
1 "And now listen to this, family of Jacob, you who are called by the name Israel: Who got you started in the loins of Judah, you who use God's name to back up your promises and pray to the God of Israel? But do you mean it? Do you live like it?
2 (for they call themselves of the holy city, and stay themselves on the God of Yisra'el; the LORD of Hosts is his name):
2 You claim to be citizens of the Holy City; you act as though you lean on the God of Israel, named God-of-the-Angel-Armies.
3 I have declared the former things from of old; yes, they went forth out of my mouth, and I shown them: suddenly I did them, and they happened.
3 For a long time now, I've let you in on the way I work: I told you what I was going to do beforehand, then I did it and it was done, and that's that.
4 Because I knew that you are obstinate, and your neck is an iron sinew, and your brow brass;
4 I know you're a bunch of hardheads, obstinate and flint-faced,
5 therefore I have declared it to you from of old; before it came to pass I shown it you; lest you should say, My idol has done them, and my engraved image, and my molten image, has commanded them.
5 So I got a running start and began telling you what was going on before it even happened. That is why you can't say, 'My god-idol did this.' 'My favorite god-carving commanded this.'
6 You have heard it; see all this; and you, will you not declare it? I have shown you new things from this time, even hidden things, which you have not known.
6 You have all this evidence confirmed by your own eyes and ears. Shouldn't you be talking about it? And that was just the beginning. I have a lot more to tell you, things you never knew existed.
7 They are created now, and not from of old; and before this day you didn't hear them; lest you should say, Behold, I knew them.
7 This isn't a variation on the same old thing. This is new, brand-new, something you'd never guess or dream up. When you hear this you won't be able to say, 'I knew that all along.'
8 Yes, you didn't hear; yes, you didn't know; yes, from of old your ear was not opened: for I knew that you did deal very treacherously, and was called a transgressor from the womb.
8 You've never been good listeners to me. You have a history of ignoring me, A sorry track record of fickle attachments - rebels from the womb.
9 For my name's sake will I defer my anger, and for my praise will I refrain for you, that I not cut you off.
9 But out of the sheer goodness of my heart, because of who I am, I keep a tight rein on my anger and hold my temper. I don't wash my hands of you.
10 Behold, I have refined you, but not as silver; I have chosen you in the furnace of affliction.
10 Do you see what I've done? I've refined you, but not without fire. I've tested you like silver in the furnace of affliction.
11 For my own sake, for my own sake, will I do it; for how should [my name] be profaned? and my glory I will not give to another.
11 Out of myself, simply because of who I am, I do what I do. I have my reputation to keep up. I'm not playing second fiddle to either gods or people.
12 Listen to me, O Ya`akov, and Yisra'el my called: I am he; I am the first, I also am the last.
12 "Listen, Jacob. Listen, Israel - I'm the One who named you! I'm the One. I got things started and, yes, I'll wrap them up.
13 Yes, my hand has laid the foundation of the eretz, and my right hand has spread out the heavens: when I call to them, they stand up together.
13 Earth is my work, handmade. And the skies - I made them too, horizon to horizon. When I speak, they're on their feet, at attention.
14 Assemble yourselves, all you, and hear; who among them has declared these things? He whom the LORD loves shall perform his pleasure on Bavel, and his arm [shall be on] the Kasdim.
14 "Come everybody, gather around, listen: Who among the gods has delivered the news? I, God, love this man Cyrus, and I'm using him to do what I want with Babylon.
15 I, even I, have spoken; yes, I have called him; I have brought him, and he shall make his way prosperous.
15 I, yes I, have spoken. I've called him. I've brought him here. He'll be successful.
16 Come you near to me, hear you this; from the beginning I have not spoken in secret; from the time that it was, there am I: and now the Lord GOD has sent me, and his Spirit.
16 Come close, listen carefully: I've never kept secrets from you. I've always been present with you." Your Progeny, Like Grains of Sand And now, the Master, God, sends me and his Spirit
17 Thus says the LORD, your Redeemer, the Holy One of Yisra'el: I am the LORD your God, who teaches you to profit, who leads you by the way that you should go.
17 with this Message from God, your Redeemer, The Holy of Israel: "I am God, your God, who teaches you how to live right and well. I show you what to do, where to go.
18 Oh that you had listened to my mitzvot! then had your shalom been as a river, and your righteousness as the waves of the sea:
18 If you had listened all along to what I told you, your life would have flowed full like a river, blessings rolling in like waves from the sea.
19 your seed also had been as the sand, and the offspring of your loins like the grains of it: his name would not be cut off nor destroyed from before me.
19 Children and grandchildren are like sand, your progeny like grains of sand. There would be no end of them, no danger of losing touch with me."
20 Go you forth from Bavel, flee you from the Kasdim; with a voice of singing declare you, tell this, utter it even to the end of the eretz: say you, the LORD has redeemed his servant Ya`akov.
20 Get out of Babylon! Run from the Babylonians! Shout the news. Broadcast it. Let the world know, the whole world. Tell them, "God redeemed his dear servant Jacob!"
21 They didn't thirst when he led them through the deserts; he caused the waters to flow out of the rock for them; he split the rock also, and the waters gushed out.
21 They weren't thirsty when he led them through the deserts. He made water pour out of the rock; he split the rock and the water gushed.
22 There is no shalom, says the LORD, to the wicked.
22 "There is no peace," says God, "for the wicked."
