James 1

WEB 1 James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes which are in the Dispersion: Greetings. NIV 1 James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, To the twelve tribes scattered among the nations: Greetings. WEB 2 Count it all joy, my brothers, when you fall into various temptations, NIV 2 Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, WEB 3 Knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. NIV 3 because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. WEB 4 Let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. NIV 4 Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. WEB 5 But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given him. NIV 5 If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. WEB 6 But let him ask in faith, without any doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, driven by the wind and tossed. NIV 6 But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. WEB 7 For let that man not think that he will receive anything from the Lord. NIV 7 That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. WEB 8 He is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways. NIV 8 Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do. WEB 9 But let the brother in humble circumstances glory in his high position; NIV 9 Believers in humble circumstances ought to take pride in their high position. WEB 10 and the rich, in that he is made humble, because like the flower in the grass, he will pass away. NIV 10 But the rich should take pride in their humiliation—since they will pass away like a wild flower. WEB 11 For the sun arises with the scorching wind, and withers the grass, and the flower in it falls, and the beauty of its appearance perishes. So also will the rich man fade away in his pursuits. NIV 11 For the sun rises with scorching heat and withers the plant; its blossom falls and its beauty is destroyed. In the same way, the rich will fade away even while they go about their business. WEB 12 Blessed is the man who endures temptation, for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life, which the Lord promised to those who love him. NIV 12 Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him. WEB 13 Let no man say when he is tempted, "I am tempted by God," for God can't be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. NIV 13 When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; WEB 14 But each one is tempted, when he is drawn away by his own lust, and enticed. NIV 14 but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. WEB 15 Then the lust, when it has conceived, bears sin; and the sin, when it is full grown, brings forth death. NIV 15 Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death. WEB 16 Don't be deceived, my beloved brothers. NIV 16 Don’t be deceived, my dear brothers and sisters. WEB 17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom can be no variation, nor turning shadow. NIV 17 Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. WEB 18 Of his own will he brought us forth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of first fruits of his creatures. NIV 18 He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of all he created. WEB 19 So, then, my beloved brothers, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger; NIV 19 My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, WEB 20 for the anger of man doesn't produce the righteousness of God. NIV 20 because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires. WEB 21 Therefore, putting away all filthiness and overflowing of wickedness, receive with humility the implanted word, which is able to save your souls. NIV 21 Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you. WEB 22 But be doers of the word, and not only hearers, deluding your own selves. NIV 22 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. WEB 23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man beholding his natural face in a mirror; NIV 23 Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror WEB 24 for he sees himself, and goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was. NIV 24 and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. WEB 25 But he who looks into the perfect law, the law of freedom, and continues, not being a hearer who forgets but a doer of the work, this man will be blessed in what he does. NIV 25 But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do. WEB 26 If anyone among you thinks himself to be religious, while he doesn't bridle his tongue, but deceives his heart, this man's religion is worthless. NIV 26 Those who consider themselves religious and yet do not keep a tight rein on their tongues deceive themselves, and their religion is worthless. WEB 27 Pure religion and undefiled before our God and Father is this: to visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained by the world. NIV 27 Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.
