ESV 13 The Passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. MSG 13 When the Passover Feast, celebrated each spring by the Jews, was about to take place, Jesus traveled up to Jerusalem. ESV 14 In the temple he found those who were selling oxen and sheep and pigeons, and the money-changers sitting there. MSG 14 He found the Temple teeming with people selling cattle and sheep and doves. The loan sharks were also there in full strength. ESV 15 And making a whip of cords, he drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and oxen. And he poured out the coins of the money-changers and overturned their tables. MSG 15 Jesus put together a whip out of strips of leather and chased them out of the Temple, stampeding the sheep and cattle, upending the tables of the loan sharks, spilling coins left and right. ESV 16 And he told those who sold the pigeons, "Take these things away; do not make my Father's house a house of trade." MSG 16 He told the dove merchants, "Get your things out of here! Stop turning my Father's house into a shopping mall!" ESV 17 His disciples remembered that it was written, "Zeal for your house will consume me." MSG 17 That's when his disciples remembered the Scripture, "Zeal for your house consumes me." ESV 18 So the Jews said to him, "What sign do you show us for doing these things?" MSG 18 But the Jews were upset. They asked, "What credentials can you present to justify this?" ESV 19 Jesus answered them, "Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up." MSG 19 Jesus answered, "Tear down this Temple and in three days I'll put it back together." ESV 20 The Jews then said, "It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and will you raise it up in three days?" MSG 20 They were indignant: "It took forty-six years to build this Temple, and you're going to rebuild it in three days?" ESV 21 But he was speaking about the temple of his body. MSG 21 But Jesus was talking about his body as the Temple. ESV 22 When therefore he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this, and they believed the Scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken. MSG 22 Later, after he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered he had said this. They then put two and two together and believed both what was written in Scripture and what Jesus had said. ESV 23 Now when he was in Jerusalem at the Passover Feast, many believed in his name when they saw the signs that he was doing. MSG 23 During the time he was in Jerusalem, those days of the Passover Feast, many people noticed the signs he was displaying and, seeing they pointed straight to God, entrusted their lives to him. ESV 24 But Jesus on his part did not entrust himself to them, because he knew all people MSG 24 But Jesus didn't entrust his life to them. He knew them inside and out, knew how untrustworthy they were. ESV 25 and needed no one to bear witness about man, for he himself knew what was in man. MSG 25 He didn't need any help in seeing right through them.
