1 Enojo de Jonás por la misericordia del Señor<br />Este cambio de planes molestó mucho a Jonás y se enfureció.

2 Entonces le reclamó al Señor<br />:<br />—S<br />, ¿no te dije antes de salir de casa que tú harías precisamente esto? ¡Por eso huí a Tarsis! Sabía que tú eres un Dios misericordioso y compasivo, lento para enojarte y lleno de amor inagotable. Estás dispuesto a perdonar y no destruir a la gente.

3 ¡Quítame la vida ahora, Señor<br />! Prefiero estar muerto y no vivo si lo que yo predije no sucederá.

4 El Señor<br /> le respondió:<br />—¿Te parece bien enojarte por esto?

5 Entonces Jonás se fue al oriente de la ciudad e hizo una enramada. Luego se sentó bajo la sombra de la enramada mientras esperaba ver lo que le acontecería a la ciudad.

6 Ahora bien, el Señor<br /> Dios proveyó que una planta frondosa creciera allí y pronto extendió sus anchas hojas sobre la cabeza de Jonás y lo protegió del sol. Esto le trajo alivio y Jonás estuvo muy agradecido por la planta.

7 ¡Pero Dios también proveyó un gusano! Al amanecer del día siguiente, el gusano se comió el tallo de la planta, de modo que se marchitó.

8 Así que cuando el sol se intensificó, Dios proveyó un viento abrasador del oriente para que soplara sobre Jonás. El sol pegó sobre su cabeza hasta que se sintió tan débil que deseaba morirse y exclamó: «¡Es mejor morir que vivir así!».

9 Entonces Dios dijo a Jonás:<br />—¿Te parece bien enojarte porque la planta murió?<br />—¡Sí —replicó Jonás—, estoy tan enojado que quisiera morirme!

10 Entonces el Señor<br /> le respondió:<br />—Sientes lástima por una planta, aunque tú no hiciste nada para que creciera. Creció rápido y murió rápido.

11 Pero Nínive tiene más de ciento veinte mil habitantes que viven en oscuridad espiritual,<br /> sin mencionar todos los animales. ¿No debería yo sentir lástima por esta gran ciudad?

1 But to Jonah this seemed very wrong, and he became angry.

2 He prayed to the LORD, “Isn’t this what I said, LORD, when I was still at home? That is what I tried to forestall by fleeing to Tarshish. I knew that you are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abounding in love, a God who relents from sending calamity.

3 Now, LORD, take away my life, for it is better for me to die than to live.”

4 But the LORD replied, “Is it right for you to be angry?”

5 Jonah had gone out and sat down at a place east of the city. There he made himself a shelter, sat in its shade and waited to see what would happen to the city.

6 Then the LORD God provided a leafy plant and made it grow up over Jonah to give shade for his head to ease his discomfort, and Jonah was very happy about the plant.

7 But at dawn the next day God provided a worm, which chewed the plant so that it withered.

8 When the sun rose, God provided a scorching east wind, and the sun blazed on Jonah’s head so that he grew faint. He wanted to die, and said, “It would be better for me to die than to live.”

9 But God said to Jonah, “Is it right for you to be angry about the plant?” “It is,” he said. “And I’m so angry I wish I were dead.”

10 But the LORD said, “You have been concerned about this plant, though you did not tend it or make it grow. It sprang up overnight and died overnight.

11 And should I not have concern for the great city of Nineveh, in which there are more than a hundred and twenty thousand people who cannot tell their right hand from their left—and also many animals?”
