Joshua 14

JUB

NIV

1 This is the inheritance of the sons of Israel in the land of Canaan, which Eleazar the priest and Joshua, the son of Nun, and the heads of the fathers of the tribes of the sons of Israel, distributed unto them.
1 Now these are the areas the Israelites received as an inheritance in the land of Canaan, which Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun and the heads of the tribal clans of Israel allotted to them.
2 Their inheritance was by lot, as the LORD had commanded by the hand of Moses, to be given to the nine tribes and to the half tribe.
2 Their inheritances were assigned by lot to the nine-and-a-half tribes, as the LORD had commanded through Moses.
3 For Moses had given the inheritance of two tribes and half a tribe on the other side of the Jordan, but unto the Levites he gave no inheritance among them.
3 Moses had granted the two-and-a-half tribes their inheritance east of the Jordan but had not granted the Levites an inheritance among the rest,
4 For the sons of Joseph were two tribes, Manasseh and Ephraim, and they gave no part unto the Levites in the land except cities to dwell in with their suburbs for their livestock and for their substance.
4 for Joseph’s descendants had become two tribes—Manasseh and Ephraim. The Levites received no share of the land but only towns to live in, with pasturelands for their flocks and herds.
5 As the LORD had commanded Moses, so the sons of Israel did regarding the dividing of the land.
5 So the Israelites divided the land, just as the LORD had commanded Moses.
6 Then the sons of Judah came unto Joshua in Gilgal, and Caleb, the son of Jephunneh the Kenezite, said unto him, Thou knowest the thing that the LORD said unto Moses, the man of God, concerning me and thee in Kadeshbarnea.
6 Now the people of Judah approached Joshua at Gilgal, and Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite said to him, “You know what the LORD said to Moses the man of God at Kadesh Barnea about you and me.
7 I was forty years old when Moses, the slave of the LORD, sent me from Kadeshbarnea to spy out the land, and I brought him word again as it was in my heart,
7 I was forty years old when Moses the servant of the LORD sent me from Kadesh Barnea to explore the land. And I brought him back a report according to my convictions,
8 but my brethren that went up with me made the heart of the people melt; but I entirely followed the LORD my God.
8 but my fellow Israelites who went up with me made the hearts of the people melt in fear. I, however, followed the LORD my God wholeheartedly.
9 And Moses swore on that day, saying, Surely the land on which thy feet have trodden shall be thy inheritance and thy sons’ for ever because thou hast entirely followed the LORD my God.
9 So on that day Moses swore to me, ‘The land on which your feet have walked will be your inheritance and that of your children forever, because you have followed the LORD my God wholeheartedly.’
10 And now, behold, the LORD has caused me to live, as he said, these forty-five years from the time that the LORD spoke these words unto Moses, while Israel has walked in the wilderness; and now, behold, I am this day eighty-five years old.
10 “Now then, just as the LORD promised, he has kept me alive for forty-five years since the time he said this to Moses, while Israel moved about in the wilderness. So here I am today, eighty-five years old!
11 As yet I am as strong today as I was in the day that Moses sent me; as my strength was then, even so is my strength now, for war and to go out and to come in.
11 I am still as strong today as the day Moses sent me out; I’m just as vigorous to go out to battle now as I was then.
12 Now, therefore, give me this mountain, of which the LORD spoke in that day; for thou didst hear in that day how the Anakims were there and that the cities were great and strong; peradventure, the LORD will be with me, and I shall drive them out, as the LORD said.
12 Now give me this hill country that the LORD promised me that day. You yourself heard then that the Anakites were there and their cities were large and fortified, but, the LORD helping me, I will drive them out just as he said.”
13 Then Joshua blessed him and gave unto Caleb, the son of Jephunneh, Hebron as inheritance.
13 Then Joshua blessed Caleb son of Jephunneh and gave him Hebron as his inheritance.
14 Hebron, therefore, became the inheritance of Caleb, the son of Jephunneh the Kenezite, unto this day because he entirely followed the LORD God of Israel.
14 So Hebron has belonged to Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite ever since, because he followed the LORD, the God of Israel, wholeheartedly.
15 And the name of Hebron before was Kirjatharba; Arba had been a great man among the Anakims. And the land had rest from war.
15 (Hebron used to be called Kiriath Arba after Arba, who was the greatest man among the Anakites.) Then the land had rest from war.
