The Message Bible MSG
1 A long time passed. The LORD had given rest to Israel from all their surrounding enemies, and Joshua had grown very old.
1
A long time later, after God had given Israel rest from all their surrounding enemies, and Joshua was a venerable old man,
2 Joshua summoned all Israel, their elders, their heads, their judges, and their officers. He said to them, “I've grown very old.
2
Joshua called all Israel together - elders, chiefs, judges, and officers. Then he spoke to them:
3 You've seen all that the LORD your God has done to all these nations because of you. It is the LORD your God who fights for you.
3
You have seen everything that God has done to these nations because of you. He did it because he's God, your God. He fought for you.
4 Look. I've allotted to you these remaining nations as a legacy for your tribes, along with all the nations I have destroyed. They stretch from the Jordan to the Mediterranean Sea.
4
"Stay alert: I have assigned to you by lot these nations that remain as an inheritance to your tribes - these in addition to the nations I have already cut down - from the Jordan to the Great Sea in the west
5 The LORD your God will force them out before you and remove them from you. Then you will take over their land, exactly as the LORD your God has promised you.
5
God, your God, will drive them out of your path until there's nothing left of them and you'll take over their land just as God, your God, promised you.
6 Be very strong. Carefully obey everything written in the Instruction scroll from Moses. Don't deviate a bit from it either to the right or to the left.
6
"Now, stay strong and steady. Obediently do everything written in the Book of The Revelation of Moses - don't miss a detail.
7 Don't have anything to do with these nations that remain with you. Don't invoke the names of their gods or take oaths by them. Don't serve them or worship them.
7
Don't get mixed up with the nations that are still around. Don't so much as speak the names of their gods or swear by them. And by all means don't worship or pray to them.
8 Hold on to the LORD your God instead, exactly as you've done right up to today.
8
Hold tight to God, your God, just as you've done up to now.
9 “The LORD has removed great and powerful nations before you. To this day, no one has stood up to you.
9
"God has driven out superpower nations before you. And up to now, no one has been able to stand up to you.
10 A single one of you puts a thousand to flight. This is because the LORD your God fights for you, exactly as he promised you.
10
Think of it - one of you, single-handedly, putting a thousand on the run! Because God is God, your God. Because he fights for you, just as he promised you.
11 For your own sake, be very careful to love the LORD your God.
11
"Now, vigilantly guard your souls: Love God, your God.
12 But if you should turn away and join the rest of these nations that remain with you, intermarry with them, and associate with each other,
12
Because if you wander off and start taking up with these remaining nations still among you (intermarry, say, and have other dealings with them),
13 then know for certain that the LORD your God won't keep on removing these nations before you. Instead, they will be a snare and a trap for you. They will be a whip on your sides and thorns in your eyes, until you vanish from this fertile land that the LORD your God has given you.
13
know for certain that God, your God, will not get rid of these nations for you. They'll be nothing but trouble to you - horsewhips on your backs and sand in your eyes - until you're the ones who will be driven out of this good land that God, your God, has given you.
14 "Look. I'm now walking on the road to death that all the earth must take. You know with all your heart and being that not a single one of all the good things that the LORD your God promised about you has failed. They were all fulfilled for you. Not a single one of them has failed.
14
"As you can see, I'm about to go the way we all end up going. Know this with all your heart, with everything in you, that not one detail has failed of all the good things God, your God, promised you. It has all happened. Nothing's left undone - not so much as a word
15 But in the same way that every good thing that the LORD your God promised about you has been fulfilled, so the LORD could bring against you every bad thing as well. He could wipe you out from this fertile land that the LORD your God has given you.
15
"But just as sure as everything good that God, your God, has promised has come true, so also God will bring to pass every bad thing until there's nothing left of you in this good land that God has given you.
16 If you violate the covenant of the LORD your God, which he commanded you to keep, and go on to serve other gods and worship them, then the LORD will be furious with you. You will quickly vanish from the fertile land that he has given you."
16
If you leave the path of the Covenant of God, your God, that he commanded you, go off and serve and worship other gods, God's anger will blaze out against you. In no time at all there'll be nothing left of you, no sign that you've ever been in this good land he gave you."
