1 División de la tierra al occidente del Jordán<br />Las demás tribus de Israel recibieron porciones de tierra en Canaán asignadas por el sacerdote Eleazar, por Josué, hijo de Nun, y por los jefes de las tribus.

2 Esas nueve tribus y media recibieron sus porciones de tierra mediante un sorteo sagrado, según el mandato que el Señor<br /> había dado por medio de Moisés.

3 Moisés ya les había asignado una porción de tierra a las dos tribus y media que estaban al oriente del río Jordán, pero no había entregado ninguna porción a los levitas.

4 Los descendientes de José se habían separado en dos tribus distintas: Manasés y Efraín. Y a los levitas no se les dio ninguna porción de tierra, únicamente ciudades donde vivir, rodeadas de pastizales para sus animales y posesiones.

5 De modo que se distribuyó la tierra exactamente según las órdenes que el Señor<br /> había dado a Moisés.

6 Caleb solicita su tierra<br />Una delegación de la tribu de Judá, dirigida por Caleb, hijo de Jefone, el cenezeo, se presentó ante Josué, quien estaba en Gilgal. Caleb le dijo a Josué: «Recuerda lo que el Señor<br /> le dijo a Moisés, hombre de Dios, acerca de ti y de mí cuando estábamos en Cades-barnea.

7 Yo tenía cuarenta años cuando Moisés, siervo del Señor<br />, me envió desde Cades-barnea a que explorara la tierra de Canaán. Regresé y di un informe objetivo de lo que vi,

8 pero los hermanos que me acompañaron asustaron tanto al pueblo que nadie quería entrar en la Tierra Prometida. Por mi parte, seguí al Señor<br /> mi Dios con todo mi corazón.

9 Así que, ese día, Moisés me prometió solemnemente: “La tierra de Canaán, por donde recién caminaste, será tu porción de tierra y la de tus descendientes para siempre, porque seguiste al Señor<br /> mi Dios con todo tu corazón”.

10 »Ahora, como puedes ver, en todos estos cuarenta y cinco años desde que Moisés hizo esa promesa, el Señor<br /> me ha mantenido con vida y buena salud tal como lo prometió, incluso mientras Israel andaba vagando por el desierto. Ahora tengo ochenta y cinco años.

11 Estoy tan fuerte hoy como cuando Moisés me envió a esa travesía y aún puedo andar y pelear tan bien como lo hacía entonces.

12 Así que dame la zona montañosa que el Señor<br /> me prometió. Tú recordarás que, mientras explorábamos, encontramos allí a los descendientes de Anac, que vivían en grandes ciudades amuralladas. Pero si el Señor<br /> está conmigo, yo los expulsaré de la tierra, tal como el Señor<br /> dijo».

13 Entonces Josué bendijo a Caleb, hijo de Jefone, y le dio Hebrón como su asignación de tierra.

14 Hebrón todavía pertenece a los descendientes de Caleb, hijo de Jefone, el cenezeo, porque él siguió al Señor<br />, Dios de Israel, con todo su corazón.

1 Now these are the areas the Israelites received as an inheritance in the land of Canaan, which Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun and the heads of the tribal clans of Israel allotted to them.

2 Their inheritances were assigned by lot to the nine-and-a-half tribes, as the LORD had commanded through Moses.

3 Moses had granted the two-and-a-half tribes their inheritance east of the Jordan but had not granted the Levites an inheritance among the rest,

4 for Joseph’s descendants had become two tribes—Manasseh and Ephraim. The Levites received no share of the land but only towns to live in, with pasturelands for their flocks and herds.

5 So the Israelites divided the land, just as the LORD had commanded Moses.

6 Now the people of Judah approached Joshua at Gilgal, and Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite said to him, “You know what the LORD said to Moses the man of God at Kadesh Barnea about you and me.

7 I was forty years old when Moses the servant of the LORD sent me from Kadesh Barnea to explore the land. And I brought him back a report according to my convictions,

8 but my fellow Israelites who went up with me made the hearts of the people melt in fear. I, however, followed the LORD my God wholeheartedly.

9 So on that day Moses swore to me, ‘The land on which your feet have walked will be your inheritance and that of your children forever, because you have followed the LORD my God wholeheartedly.’

10 “Now then, just as the LORD promised, he has kept me alive for forty-five years since the time he said this to Moses, while Israel moved about in the wilderness. So here I am today, eighty-five years old!

11 I am still as strong today as the day Moses sent me out; I’m just as vigorous to go out to battle now as I was then.

12 Now give me this hill country that the LORD promised me that day. You yourself heard then that the Anakites were there and their cities were large and fortified, but, the LORD helping me, I will drive them out just as he said.”

13 Then Joshua blessed Caleb son of Jephunneh and gave him Hebron as his inheritance.

14 So Hebron has belonged to Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite ever since, because he followed the LORD, the God of Israel, wholeheartedly.

15 (Hebron used to be called Kiriath Arba after Arba, who was the greatest man among the Anakites.) Then the land had rest from war.
