1 Sentencia de muerte para Jesús<br />Entonces Pilato mandó azotar a Jesús con un látigo que tenía puntas de plomo.

Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged.
2 Los soldados armaron una corona de espinas y se la pusieron en la cabeza y lo vistieron con un manto púrpura.

The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head. They clothed him in a purple robe
3 «¡Viva el rey de los judíos!» —se burlaban de él mientras lo abofeteaban.

and went up to him again and again, saying, “Hail, king of the Jews!” And they slapped him in the face.
4 Pilato volvió a salir y le dijo al pueblo: «Ahora lo voy a traer, pero que quede bien claro que yo no lo encuentro culpable de nada».

Once more Pilate came out and said to the Jews gathered there, “Look, I am bringing him out to you to let you know that I find no basis for a charge against him.”
5 Entonces Jesús salió con la corona de espinas sobre la cabeza y el manto púrpura puesto. Y Pilato dijo: «¡Miren, aquí tienen al hombre!».

When Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe, Pilate said to them, “Here is the man!”
6 Cuando lo vieron, los principales sacerdotes y los guardias del templo comenzaron a gritar: «¡Crucifícalo! ¡Crucifícalo!».<br />—Llévenselo ustedes y crucifíquenlo —dijo Pilato—. Yo no lo encuentro culpable.

As soon as the chief priests and their officials saw him, they shouted, “Crucify! Crucify!” But Pilate answered, “You take him and crucify him. As for me, I find no basis for a charge against him.”
7 Los líderes judíos respondieron:<br />—Según nuestra ley, debe morir porque afirmó que era el Hijo de Dios.

The Jewish leaders insisted, “We have a law, and according to that law he must die, because he claimed to be the Son of God.”
8 Cuando Pilato oyó eso, tuvo más miedo que nunca.

When Pilate heard this, he was even more afraid,
9 Llevó a Jesús de nuevo a la residencia oficial<br /> y le preguntó: «¿De dónde eres?». Pero Jesús no le dio ninguna respuesta.

and he went back inside the palace. “Where do you come from?” he asked Jesus, but Jesus gave him no answer.
10 —¿Por qué no me hablas? —preguntó Pilato—. ¿No te das cuenta de que tengo poder para ponerte en libertad o para crucificarte?

“Do you refuse to speak to me?” Pilate said. “Don’t you realize I have power either to free you or to crucify you?”
11 Entonces Jesús le dijo:

Jesus answered, “You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above. Therefore the one who handed me over to you is guilty of a greater sin.”
12 Entonces Pilato trató de poner en libertad a Jesús, pero los líderes judíos gritaron: «Si pones en libertad a ese hombre, no eres “amigo del César”<br />. Todo el que se proclama a sí mismo rey está en rebeldía contra el César».

From then on, Pilate tried to set Jesus free, but the Jewish leaders kept shouting, “If you let this man go, you are no friend of Caesar. Anyone who claims to be a king opposes Caesar.”
13 Cuando dijeron eso, Pilato llevó de nuevo a Jesús ante el pueblo. Entonces Pilato se sentó en el tribunal, en la plataforma llamada el Empedrado (en hebreo, <br />).

When Pilate heard this, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judge’s seat at a place known as the Stone Pavement (which in Aramaic is Gabbatha).
14 Ya era el día de preparación para la Pascua, cerca del mediodía. Y Pilato dijo al pueblo:<br /> «¡Miren, aquí tienen a su rey!».

It was the day of Preparation of the Passover; it was about noon. “Here is your king,” Pilate said to the Jews.
15 «¡Llévatelo! ¡Llévatelo! —gritaban—. ¡Crucifícalo!».<br />—¿Cómo dicen?, ¿qué yo crucifique a su rey? —preguntó Pilato.<br />—No tenemos otro rey más que el César —le contestaron a gritos los principales sacerdotes.

But they shouted, “Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him!” “Shall I crucify your king?” Pilate asked. “We have no king but Caesar,” the chief priests answered.
16 Entonces Pilato les entregó a Jesús para que lo crucificaran.<br />La crucifixión<br />Así que se llevaron a Jesús.

Finally Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified. So the soldiers took charge of Jesus.

Carrying his own cross, he went out to the place of the Skull (which in Aramaic is called Golgotha).
18 Allí lo clavaron en la cruz. También crucificaron a otros dos con él, uno a cada lado, y a Jesús, en medio.

There they crucified him, and with him two others—one on each side and Jesus in the middle.
19 Y Pilato colocó un letrero sobre la cruz, que decía: «Jesús de Nazaret,<br /> el Rey de los judíos».

Pilate had a notice prepared and fastened to the cross. It read: JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS.

Many of the Jews read this sign, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and the sign was written in Aramaic, Latin and Greek.
21 Entonces los principales sacerdotes se opusieron y le dijeron a Pilato:<br />—Cambia la inscripción “el Rey de los judíos” por una que diga “él dice: ‘Yo soy el Rey de los judíos’”.

The chief priests of the Jews protested to Pilate, “Do not write ‘The King of the Jews,’ but that this man claimed to be king of the Jews.”
22 —No —respondió Pilato—. Lo que he escrito, escrito está y así quedará.

Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.”
23 Una vez que los soldados terminaron de crucificarlo, tomaron la ropa de Jesús y la dividieron en cuatro partes, una para cada uno de ellos. También tomaron la túnica, la cual no tenía costura y había sido tejida de arriba a abajo en una sola pieza.

When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took his clothes, dividing them into four shares, one for each of them, with the undergarment remaining. This garment was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom.
24 Así que dijeron: «En lugar de rasgarla, tiremos los dados<br /> para ver quién se la queda». Con eso se cumplió la Escritura que dice: «Se repartieron entre ellos mi vestimenta y tiraron los dados por mi ropa»<br />. Así que eso fue lo que hicieron.

“Let’s not tear it,” they said to one another. “Let’s decide by lot who will get it.” This happened that the scripture might be fulfilled that said, “They divided my clothes among them and cast lots for my garment.”So this is what the soldiers did.
25 Estaban de pie junto a la cruz la madre de Jesús, la hermana de su madre, María la esposa de Cleofas y María Magdalena.

Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.
26 Cuando Jesús vio a su madre al lado del discípulo que él amaba, le dijo:

When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to her, “Woman,here is your son,”
27 Y al discípulo le dijo:<br /> Y, a partir de entonces, ese discípulo la llevó a vivir a su casa.

and to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” From that time on, this disciple took her into his home.
28 Muerte de Jesús<br />Jesús sabía que su misión ya había terminado y, para cumplir las Escrituras, dijo:

Later, knowing that everything had now been finished, and so that Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, “I am thirsty.”
29 Había allí una vasija de vino agrio, así que mojaron una esponja en el vino, la pusieron en una rama de hisopo y la acercaron a los labios de Jesús.

A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips.
30 Después de probar el vino, Jesús dijo:<br /> Entonces inclinó la cabeza y entregó su espíritu.

When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
31 Era el día de preparación, y los líderes judíos no querían que los cuerpos permanecieran allí colgados el día siguiente, que era el día de descanso (y uno muy especial, porque era la Pascua). Entonces le pidieron a Pilato que mandara a quebrarles las piernas a los crucificados para apresurarles la muerte. Así podrían bajar los cuerpos.

Now it was the day of Preparation, and the next day was to be a special Sabbath. Because the Jewish leaders did not want the bodies left on the crosses during the Sabbath, they asked Pilate to have the legs broken and the bodies taken down.
32 Entonces los soldados fueron y les quebraron las piernas a los dos hombres crucificados con Jesús.

The soldiers therefore came and broke the legs of the first man who had been crucified with Jesus, and then those of the other.
33 Cuando llegaron a Jesús, vieron que ya estaba muerto, así que no le quebraron las piernas.

But when they came to Jesus and found that he was already dead, they did not break his legs.
34 Sin embargo, uno de los soldados le atravesó el costado con una lanza y, de inmediato, salió sangre y agua.

Instead, one of the soldiers pierced Jesus’ side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water.

The man who saw it has given testimony, and his testimony is true. He knows that he tells the truth, and he testifies so that you also may believe.

These things happened so that the scripture would be fulfilled: “Not one of his bones will be broken,”

and, as another scripture says, “They will look on the one they have pierced.”
38 Entierro de Jesús<br />Más tarde, José de Arimatea, quien había sido un discípulo secreto de Jesús (por temor a los líderes judíos), pidió permiso a Pilato para bajar el cuerpo de Jesús. Cuando Pilato concedió el permiso, José fue a buscar el cuerpo y se lo llevó.

Later, Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate for the body of Jesus. Now Joseph was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly because he feared the Jewish leaders. With Pilate’s permission, he came and took the body away.

He was accompanied by Nicodemus, the man who earlier had visited Jesus at night. Nicodemus brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds.

Taking Jesus’ body, the two of them wrapped it, with the spices, in strips of linen. This was in accordance with Jewish burial customs.

At the place where Jesus was crucified, there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb, in which no one had ever been laid.

Because it was the Jewish day of Preparation and since the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus there.
