1 Or les hommes d'Israël avaient juré à Mitspa, en disant: Nul de nous ne donnera sa fille pour femme à un Benjamite.

1 Now the Ish Yisroel had taken an oath in Mitzpah, saying, There shall not any of us give his bat unto Binyamin as isha.
2 Puis le peuple vint à Béthel, et resta là jusqu'au soir en la présence de Dieu. Ils élevèrent la voix et répandirent des larmes en abondance,

And HaAm went to Beit-El, and abode there till erev before HaElohim, and lifted up their voices, and wept gadol;
3 Et ils dirent: O Éternel, Dieu d'Israël, pourquoi ceci est-il arrivé en Israël, qu'il manque aujourd'hui une tribu d'Israël?

And said, Hashem Elohei Yisroel, why is this come to pass in Yisroel, that there should be today shevet echad lacking in Yisroel?
4 Et le lendemain le peuple se leva de bon matin; et ils bâtirent là un autel, et ils offrirent des holocaustes et des sacrifices de prospérité.

And it came to pass on the next day, that HaAm rose early, and built there a Mizbe’ach, and offered olot and shelamim.
5 Alors les enfants d'Israël dirent: Qui est celui d'entre toutes les tribus d'Israël qui n'est point monté à l'assemblée, vers l'Éternel? Car on avait fait un grand serment contre celui qui ne monterait point vers l'Éternel, à Mitspa, en disant: Il sera puni de mort!

And the Bnei Yisroel said, Who is there among kol Shivtei Yisroel that came not up with the Kahal unto Hashem? For they had made the shevuah hagedolah concerning him that came not up before Hashem to Mitzpah, saying, He shall surely be put to death.
6 Car les enfants d'Israël se repentaient de ce qui était arrivé à Benjamin, leur frère, et disaient: Aujourd'hui une tribu a été retranchée d'Israël.

And the Bnei Yisroel had compassion for Binyamin their brother, and said, There is shevet echad cut off from Yisroel this day.
7 Que ferons-nous pour ceux qui sont demeurés de reste, pour leur donner des femmes, puisque nous avons juré par l'Éternel que nous ne leur donnerions point de nos filles pour femmes?

How shall we do for nashim for them that remain, seeing we have taken an oath by Hashem that we will not give them of our banot as nashim?
8 Ils dirent donc: Y a-t-il quelqu'un d'entre les tribus d'Israël qui ne soit point monté vers l'Éternel, à Mitspa? Et voici, personne de Jabès de Galaad n'était venu au camp, à l'assemblée;

And they said, What one is there of the Shivtei Yisroel that came not up to Mitzpah to Hashem? And, hinei, there came none to the machaneh from Yavesh-Gilead to the Kahal.
9 Quand on fit le dénombrement du peuple, nul ne s'y trouva des habitants de Jabès de Galaad.

For HaAm were numbered, and, hinei, there were none of the inhabitants of Yavesh-Gilead there.
10 Alors l'assemblée y envoya douze mille hommes des plus vaillants, et leur donna cet ordre: Allez et faites passer au fil de l'épée les habitants de Jabès de Galaad, tant les femmes que les petits enfants.

And HaEdah sent thither 12,000 ish of the Bnei HeChayil, and commanded them, saying, Go and strike the inhabitants of Yavesh-Gilead with the edge of the cherev, with the women and the children.
11 Voici donc ce que vous ferez: Vous vouerez à l'interdit tout mâle, et toute femme qui a connu la couche d'un homme.

And this is the thing that ye shall do, Ye shall utterly destroy every zakhar, and every isha that hath da’as of lying with man.
12 Et ils trouvèrent, parmi les habitants de Jabès de Galaad, quatre cents filles vierges, qui n'avaient point connu la couche d'un homme, et ils les amenèrent au camp, à Silo, qui est au pays de Canaan.

And they found among the inhabitants of Yavesh-Gilead four hundred na’arah betulah, that had known no man by lying with any zakhar; and they brought them unto the machaneh at Shiloh, which is in Eretz Kena’an.
13 Alors toute l'assemblée envoya parler aux Benjamites, qui étaient au rocher de Rimmon, et on leur annonça la paix.

And the kol HaEdah sent some to speak to the Bnei Binyamin that were at the Rock of Rimmon, and to proclaim shalom unto them.
14 En ce temps-là, les Benjamites revinrent, et on leur donna les femmes à qui on avait laissé la vie parmi les femmes de Jabès de Galaad; mais il ne s'en trouva pas assez pour eux.

And Binyamin came again at that time; and they gave them nashim which they had saved alive of the women of Yavesh-Gilead; but they sufficed not for them.
15 Et le peuple se repentait au sujet de Benjamin, car l'Éternel avait fait une brèche aux tribus d'Israël.

And HaAm had compassion for Binyamin, because Hashem had made a breach in the Shivtei Yisroel.
16 Et les anciens de l'assemblée dirent: Que ferons-nous pour donner des femmes à ceux qui restent? car les femmes des Benjamites ont été exterminées.

Then the Ziknei HaEdah (Elders of the Congregation) said, How shall we do for nashim for them that remain, seeing the isha are destroyed out of Binyamin?
17 Et ils dirent: Ceux qui sont réchappés, posséderont ce qui appartenait à Benjamin, afin qu'une tribu ne soit pas retranchée d'Israël.

And they said, There must be yerushah (heir) for them that be survivor of Binyamin, that a shevet be not destroyed out of Yisroel.
18 Cependant, nous ne pouvons pas leur donner des femmes d'entre nos filles; car les enfants d'Israël ont juré, en disant: Maudit soit celui qui donnera une femme à Benjamin!

Howbeit we may not give them nashim of our banot; for the Bnei Yisroel have sworn, saying, Cursed be he that giveth an isha to Binyamin.
19 Et ils dirent: Voici, il y a chaque année une fête de l'Éternel à Silo, qui est au nord de Béthel, et à l'orient du chemin qui monte de Béthel à Sichem, et au midi de Lébona.

Then they said, Hinei, there is chag Hashem (feast of Hashem) in Shiloh yearly in a place which is on the north side of Beit El, on the east side of the road that goeth up from Beit El to Shechem, and on the south of Levonah.
20 Et ils donnèrent cet ordre aux enfants de Benjamin: Allez, et placez-vous en embuscade dans les vignes;

Therefore they commanded the Bnei Binyamin, saying, Go and lie in wait in the kramim (vineyards);
21 Et quand vous verrez que les filles de Silo sortiront pour danser au son des flûtes, alors vous sortirez des vignes, et vous enlèverez chacun pour vous une femme, d'entre les filles de Silo, et vous vous en irez au pays de Benjamin.

And watch, and, hinei, if the Banot Shiloh come out to join in dances, then come ye out of the kramim (vineyards), and catch you every ish his isha of the Banot Shiloh, and go to Eretz Binyamin.
22 Et quand leurs pères ou leurs frères viendront se plaindre auprès de nous, nous leur dirons: Ayez pitié d'eux pour l'amour de nous; parce que nous n'avons point pris de femme pour chacun d'eux dans cette guerre. Car ce n'est pas vous qui les leur avez données; en ce cas vous auriez été coupables.

And it shall be, when their avot or their achim come unto us for riv (to complain), we [the Ziknei HaEdah] will say unto them, Give them to us, for we did not receive every ish his isha through the war; for ye have not given them unto them at this time; now would ye be guilty.
23 Les enfants de Benjamin firent ainsi, et prirent des femmes, selon leur nombre, d'entre les danseuses qu'ils enlevèrent; puis, ils partirent et retournèrent dans leur héritage; ils rebâtirent des villes, et y habitèrent.

And the Bnei Binyamin did so and took them nashim, according to their number, of them that danced, whom they caught; and they went and returned unto their nachalah, and repaired the towns, and dwelt in them.
24 Dans le même temps les enfants d'Israël s'en retournèrent de là, chacun en sa tribu et dans sa famille; ils s'en allèrent de là chacun dans son héritage.

And the Bnei Yisroel departed from there at that time, every ish to his shevet and to his mishpakhah, and they went out from thence every ish to his nachalah.
25 En ces jours-là il n'y avait point de roi en Israël, mais chacun faisait ce qui lui semblait bon.

In those days there was no melech in Yisroel; every man did that which was yashar (right) in his own eyes.
