Lamentations 3

NLT

CEB

1 I am the one who has seen the afflictions that come from the rod of the LORD ’s anger.
1 I am someone who saw the suffering caused by God's angry rod.
2 He has led me into darkness, shutting out all light.
2 He drove me away, forced me to walk in darkness, not light.
3 He has turned his hand against me again and again, all day long.
3 He turned his hand even against me, over and over again, all day long.
4 He has made my skin and flesh grow old. He has broken my bones.
4 He wore out my flesh and my skin; he broke my bones.
5 He has besieged and surrounded me with anguish and distress.
5 He besieged me, surrounding me with bitterness and weariness.
6 He has buried me in a dark place, like those long dead.
6 He made me live in dark places like those who've been dead a long time.
7 He has walled me in, and I cannot escape. He has bound me in heavy chains.
7 He walled me in so I couldn't escape; he made my chains heavy.
8 And though I cry and shout, he has shut out my prayers.
8 Even though I call out and cry for help, he silences my prayer.
9 He has blocked my way with a high stone wall; he has made my road crooked.
9 He walled in my paths with stonework; he made my routes crooked.
10 He has hidden like a bear or a lion, waiting to attack me.
10 He is a bear lurking for me, a lion in hiding.
11 He has dragged me off the path and torn me in pieces, leaving me helpless and devastated.
11 He took me from my path and tore me apart; he made me desolate.
12 He has drawn his bow and made me the target for his arrows.
12 He drew back his bow, made me a shooting target for arrows.
13 He shot his arrows deep into my heart.
13 He shot the arrows of his quiver into my inside parts.
14 My own people laugh at me. All day long they sing their mocking songs.
14 I have become a joke to all my people, the object of their song of ridicule all day long.
15 He has filled me with bitterness and given me a bitter cup of sorrow to drink.
15 He saturated me with grief, made me choke on bitterness.
16 He has made me chew on gravel. He has rolled me in the dust.
16 He crushed my teeth into the gravel; he pressed me down into the ashes.
17 Peace has been stripped away, and I have forgotten what prosperity is.
17 I've rejected peace; I've forgotten what is good.
18 I cry out, “My splendor is gone! Everything I had hoped for from the LORD is lost!”
18 I thought: My future is gone, as well as my hope from the LORD.
19 The thought of my suffering and homelessness is bitter beyond words.
19 The memory of my suffering and homelessness is bitterness and poison.
20 I will never forget this awful time, as I grieve over my loss.
20 I can't help but remember and am depressed.
21 Yet I still dare to hope when I remember this:
21 I call all this to mind—therefore, I will wait.
22 The faithful love of the LORD never ends! His mercies never cease.
22 Certainly the faithful love of the LORD hasn't ended; certainly God's compassion isn't through!
23 Great is his faithfulness; his mercies begin afresh each morning.
23 They are renewed every morning. Great is your faithfulness.
24 I say to myself, “The LORD is my inheritance; therefore, I will hope in him!”
24 I think: The LORD is my portion! Therefore, I'll wait for him.
25 The LORD is good to those who depend on him, to those who search for him.
25 The LORD is good to those who hope in him, to the person who seeks him.
26 So it is good to wait quietly for salvation from the LORD .
26 It's good to wait in silence for the LORD's deliverance.
27 And it is good for people to submit at an early age to the yoke of his discipline:
27 It's good for a man to carry a yoke in his youth.
28 Let them sit alone in silence beneath the LORD ’s demands.
28 He should sit alone and be silent when God lays it on him.
29 Let them lie face down in the dust, for there may be hope at last.
29 He should put his mouth in the dirt—perhaps there is hope.
30 Let them turn the other cheek to those who strike them and accept the insults of their enemies.
30 He should offer his cheek for a blow; he should be filled with shame.
31 For no one is abandoned by the Lord forever.
31 My Lord definitely won't reject forever.
32 Though he brings grief, he also shows compassion because of the greatness of his unfailing love.
32 Although he has caused grief, he will show compassion in measure with his covenant loyalty.
33 For he does not enjoy hurting people or causing them sorrow.
33 He definitely doesn't enjoy affliction, making humans suffer.
34 If people crush underfoot all the prisoners of the land,
34 Now crushing underfoot all the earth's prisoners,
35 if they deprive others of their rights in defiance of the Most High,
35 denying someone justice before the Most High,
36 if they twist justice in the courts— doesn’t the Lord see all these things?
36 subverting a person's lawsuit—doesn't my Lord see all this?
37 Who can command things to happen without the Lord’s permission?
37 Who ever spoke and it happened if my Lord hadn't commanded the same?
38 Does not the Most High send both calamity and good?
38 From the mouth of the Most High evil things don't come, but rather good!
39 Then why should we, mere humans, complain when we are punished for our sins?
39 Why then does any living person complain; why should anyone complain about their sins?
40 Instead, let us test and examine our ways. Let us turn back to the LORD .
40 We must search and examine our ways; we must return to the LORD.
41 Let us lift our hearts and hands to God in heaven and say,
41 We should lift up our hearts and hands to God in heaven.
42 “We have sinned and rebelled, and you have not forgiven us.
42 We are the ones who did wrong; we rebelled. But you, God, have not forgiven.
43 “You have engulfed us with your anger, chased us down, and slaughtered us without mercy.
43 You wrapped yourself up in wrath and hunted us; you killed, showing no compassion.
44 You have hidden yourself in a cloud so our prayers cannot reach you.
44 You wrapped yourself up in a cloud; prayers can't make it through!
45 You have discarded us as refuse and garbage among the nations.
45 You made us trash and garbage in front of all other people.
46 “All our enemies have spoken out against us.
46 All our enemies have opened their mouths against us.
47 We are filled with fear, for we are trapped, devastated, and ruined.”
47 Terror and trap have come upon us, catastrophe and collapse!
48 Tears stream from my eyes because of the destruction of my people!
48 Streams of water pour from my eyes because of the destruction of the daughter of my people.
49 My tears flow endlessly; they will not stop
49 My eyes flow and don't stop. There is no relief
50 until the LORD looks down from heaven and sees.
50 until the LORD looks down from the heavens and notices.
51 My heart is breaking over the fate of all the women of Jerusalem.
51 My eyes hurt me because of what's happened to my city's daughters.
52 My enemies, whom I have never harmed, hunted me down like a bird.
52 My enemies hunted me down like a bird, relentlessly, for no reason.
53 They threw me into a pit and dropped stones on me.
53 They caught me alive in a pit and threw stones at me;
54 The water rose over my head, and I cried out, “This is the end!”
54 water flowed over my head. I thought: I'm finished.
55 But I called on your name, LORD, from deep within the pit.
55 I call on your name, LORD, from the depths of the pit.
56 You heard me when I cried, “Listen to my pleading! Hear my cry for help!”
56 Hear my voice. Don't close your ear to my need for relief, to my cry for help.
57 Yes, you came when I called; you told me, “Do not fear.”
57 Come near to me on the day I call to you. Say to me, "Don't be afraid."
58 Lord, you are my lawyer! Plead my case! For you have redeemed my life.
58 My Lord! Plead my desperate case; redeem my life.
59 You have seen the wrong they have done to me, LORD . Be my judge, and prove me right.
59 LORD, look at my mistreatment; judge my cause.
60 You have seen the vengeful plots my enemies have laid against me.
60 Look at all of my enemies' vengeance, all of their scheming against me.
61 LORD, you have heard the vile names they call me. You know all about the plans they have made.
61 Hear their jeering, LORD, all of their scheming against me,
62 My enemies whisper and mutter as they plot against me all day long.
62 the speech of those who rise up against me, their incessant gossiping about me.
63 Look at them! Whether they sit or stand, I am the object of their mocking songs.
63 Whether sitting or standing, look at how I am the object of their song of ridicule.
64 Pay them back, LORD, for all the evil they have done.
64 Pay them back fully, LORD, according to what they have done.
65 Give them hard and stubborn hearts, and then let your curse fall on them!
65 Give them a tortured mind—put your curse on them!
66 Chase them down in your anger, destroying them beneath the LORD ’s heavens.
66 Angrily hunt them down; wipe them out from under the LORD's heaven.
