Luke 12

NRSA 1 Meanwhile, when the crowd gathered by the thousands, so that they trampled on one another, he began to speak first to his disciples, "Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees, that is, their hypocrisy. NIV 1 Meanwhile, when a crowd of many thousands had gathered, so that they were trampling on one another, Jesus began to speak first to his disciples, saying: “Beon your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. NRSA 2 Nothing is covered up that will not be uncovered, and nothing secret that will not become known. NIV 2 There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known. NRSA 3 Therefore whatever you have said in the dark will be heard in the light, and what you have whispered behind closed doors will be proclaimed from the housetops. NIV 3 What you have said in the dark will be heard in the daylight, and what you have whispered in the ear in the inner rooms will be proclaimed from the roofs. NRSA 4 "I tell you, my friends, do not fear those who kill the body, and after that can do nothing more. NIV 4 “I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that can do no more. NRSA 5 But I will warn you whom to fear: fear him who, after he has killed, has authority to cast into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him! NRSA 10 And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven; but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven. NIV 10 And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven. NRSA 11 When they bring you before the synagogues, the rulers, and the authorities, do not worry about how you are to defend yourselves or what you are to say; NIV 11 “When you are brought before synagogues, rulers and authorities, do not worry about how you will defend yourselves or what you will say, NRSA 12 for the Holy Spirit will teach you at that very hour what you ought to say." NIV 12 for the Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what you should say.” NRSA 13 Someone in the crowd said to him, "Teacher, tell my brother to divide the family inheritance with me." NIV 13 Someone in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.” NRSA 14 But he said to him, "Friend, who set me to be a judge or arbitrator over you?" NIV 14 Jesus replied, “Man, who appointed me a judge or an arbiter between you?” NRSA 15 And he said to them, "Take care! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; for one's life does not consist in the abundance of possessions." NIV 15 Then he said to them, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.” NRSA 16 Then he told them a parable: "The land of a rich man produced abundantly. NIV 16 And he told them this parable: “The ground of a certain rich man yielded an abundant harvest. NRSA 17 And he thought to himself, "What should I do, for I have no place to store my crops?' NIV 17 He thought to himself, ‘What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.’ NRSA 18 Then he said, "I will do this: I will pull down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. NIV 18 “Then he said, ‘This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store my surplus grain. NRSA 19 And I will say to my soul, Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.' NIV 19 And I’ll say to myself, “You have plenty of grain laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.” ’ NRSA 20 But God said to him, "You fool! This very night your life is being demanded of you. And the things you have prepared, whose will they be?' NIV 20 “But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’ NRSA 21 So it is with those who store up treasures for themselves but are not rich toward God." NIV 21 “This is how it will be with whoever stores up things for themselves but is not rich toward God.” NRSA 22 He said to his disciples, "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat, or about your body, what you will wear. NIV 22 Then Jesus said to his disciples: “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear. NRSA 23 For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing. NIV 23 For life is more than food, and the body more than clothes. NRSA 24 Consider the ravens: they neither sow nor reap, they have neither storehouse nor barn, and yet God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds! NIV 24 Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds! NRSA 25 And can any of you by worrying add a single hour to your span of life? NIV 25 Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to your life? NRSA 26 If then you are not able to do so small a thing as that, why do you worry about the rest? NIV 26 Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest? NRSA 27 Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not clothed like one of these. NIV 27 “Consider how the wild flowers grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. NRSA 28 But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more will he clothe you—you of little faith! NIV 28 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today, and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, how much more will he clothe you—you of little faith! NRSA 29 And do not keep striving for what you are to eat and what you are to drink, and do not keep worrying. NIV 29 And do not set your heart on what you will eat or drink; do not worry about it. NRSA 30 For it is the nations of the world that strive after all these things, and your Father knows that you need them. NIV 30 For the pagan world runs after all such things, and your Father knows that you need them. NRSA 31 Instead, strive for his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well. NIV 31 But seek his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well. NRSA 32 "Do not be afraid, little flock, for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom. NIV 32 “Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom. NRSA 33 Sell your possessions, and give alms. Make purses for yourselves that do not wear out, an unfailing treasure in heaven, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. NIV 33 Sell your possessions and give to the poor. NRSA 35 "Be dressed for action and have your lamps lit; NIV 35 “Be dressed ready for service and keep your lamps burning, NRSA 36 be like those who are waiting for their master to return from the wedding banquet, so that they may open the door for him as soon as he comes and knocks. NRSA 37 Blessed are those slaves whom the master finds alert when he comes; truly I tell you, he will fasten his belt and have them sit down to eat, and he will come and serve them. Truly I tell you, he will dress himself to serve, will have them recline at the table and will come and wait on them. NRSA 38 If he comes during the middle of the night, or near dawn, and finds them so, blessed are those slaves. NIV 38 It will be good for those servants whose master finds them ready, even if he comes in the middle of the night or toward daybreak. NRSA 39 "But know this: if the owner of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into. NIV 39 But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into. NRSA 40 You also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an unexpected hour." NIV 40 You also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.” NRSA 41 Peter said, "Lord, are you telling this parable for us or for everyone?" NIV 41 Peter asked, “Lord, are you telling this parable to us, or to everyone?” NRSA 42 And the Lord said, "Who then is the faithful and prudent manager whom his master will put in charge of his slaves, to give them their allowance of food at the proper time? NIV 42 The Lord answered, “Who then is the faithful and wise manager, whom the master puts in charge of his servants to give them their food allowance at the proper time? NRSA 43 Blessed is that slave whom his master will find at work when he arrives. NIV 43 It will be good for that servant whom the master finds doing so when he returns. NRSA 44 Truly I tell you, he will put that one in charge of all his possessions. NIV 44 Truly I tell you, he will put him in charge of all his possessions. NRSA 45 But if that slave says to himself, "My master is delayed in coming,' and if he begins to beat the other slaves, men and women, and to eat and drink and get drunk, NIV 45 But suppose the servant says to himself, ‘My master is taking a long time in coming,’ and he then begins to beat the other servants, both men and women, and to eat and drink and get drunk. NRSA 46 the master of that slave will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour that he does not know, and will cut him in pieces, and put him with the unfaithful. NIV 46 The master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he is not aware of. He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the unbelievers. NRSA 47 That slave who knew what his master wanted, but did not prepare himself or do what was wanted, will receive a severe beating. NIV 47 “The servant who knows the master’s will and does not get ready or does not do what the master wants will be beaten with many blows. NRSA 48 But the one who did not know and did what deserved a beating will receive a light beating. From everyone to whom much has been given, much will be required; and from the one to whom much has been entrusted, even more will be demanded. NIV 48 But the one who does not know and does things deserving punishment will be beaten with few blows. From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked. NRSA 49 "I came to bring fire to the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled! NIV 49 “I have come to bring fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled! NRSA 50 I have a baptism with which to be baptized, and what stress I am under until it is completed! NIV 50 But I have a baptism to undergo, and what constraint I am under until it is completed! NRSA 51 Do you think that I have come to bring peace to the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division! NIV 51 Do you think I came to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but division. NRSA 52 From now on five in one household will be divided, three against two and two against three; NIV 52 From now on there will be five in one family divided against each other, three against two and two against three. NRSA 53 they will be divided: father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law." NIV 53 They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.” NRSA 54 He also said to the crowds, "When you see a cloud rising in the west, you immediately say, "It is going to rain'; and so it happens. NIV 54 He said to the crowd: “When you see a cloud rising in the west, immediately you say, ‘It’s going to rain,’ and it does. NRSA 55 And when you see the south wind blowing, you say, "There will be scorching heat'; and it happens. NIV 55 And when the south wind blows, you say, ‘It’s going to be hot,’ and it is. NRSA 56 You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of earth and sky, but why do you not know how to interpret the present time? NIV 56 Hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky. How is it that you don’t know how to interpret this present time? NRSA 57 "And why do you not judge for yourselves what is right? NIV 57 “Why don’t you judge for yourselves what is right? NRSA 58 Thus, when you go with your accuser before a magistrate, on the way make an effort to settle the case, or you may be dragged before the judge, and the judge hand you over to the officer, and the officer throw you in prison. NIV 58 As you are going with your adversary to the magistrate, try hard to be reconciled on the way, or your adversary may drag you off to the judge, and the judge turn you over to the officer, and the officer throw you into prison. NRSA 59 I tell you, you will never get out until you have paid the very last penny." NIV 59 I tell you, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny.”
