Luke 12

1 And when much people stood about [Soothly many companies of people standing about], so that they trod each on other, he began to say to his disciples, Be ye ware of the sourdough of the Pharisees, that is hypocrisy [which is hypocrisy].
1 multis autem turbis circumstantibus ita ut se invicem conculcarent coepit dicere ad discipulos suos adtendite a fermento Pharisaeorum quae est hypocrisis
2 For nothing is covered, that shall not be showed; neither hid, that shall not be known.
2 nihil autem opertum est quod non reveletur neque absconditum quod non sciatur
3 For why those things that ye have said in darknesses, shall be said in light; and that that ye have spoken in [the] ear in bedchambers [and that that ye have spoken in the ear in couches], shall be preached in roofs.
3 quoniam quae in tenebris dixistis in lumine dicentur et quod in aurem locuti estis in cubiculis praedicabitur in tectis
4 And I say to you, my friends, be ye not afeared of them [be not afeared of them] that slay the body, and after these things have no more what they shall do.
4 dico autem vobis amicis meis ne terreamini ab his qui occidunt corpus et post haec non habent amplius quod faciant
5 But I shall show to you, whom ye shall dread; dread ye him, that after he hath slain [which after he hath slain], hath power to send into hell. And so I say to you, dread ye him.
5 ostendam autem vobis quem timeatis timete eum qui postquam occiderit habet potestatem mittere in gehennam ita dico vobis hunc timete
6 Whether five sparrows be not sold for two halfpence [for two farthings]; and one of them is not in forgetting before God?
6 nonne quinque passeres veneunt dipundio et unus ex illis non est in oblivione coram Deo
7 But also all the hairs of your head be numbered. Therefore do not ye dread; ye be of more price than many sparrows.
7 sed et capilli capitis vestri omnes numerati sunt nolite ergo timere multis passeribus pluris estis
8 Truly I say to you, each man that acknowledgeth me before men [Truly I say to you, whoever shall acknowledge me before men], man's Son shall acknowledge him before the angels of God.
8 dico autem vobis omnis quicumque confessus fuerit in me coram hominibus et Filius hominis confitebitur in illo coram angelis Dei
9 But he that denieth me before men, shall be denied before the angels of God.
9 qui autem negaverit me coram hominibus denegabitur coram angelis Dei
10 And each that saith a word against man's Son, it shall be forgiven to him; but it shall not be forgiven to him, that blasphemeth against the Holy Ghost. [And each that saith a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven to him; he that shall blaspheme into the Holy Ghost, soothly it shall not be forgiven to him.]
10 et omnis qui dicit verbum in Filium hominis remittetur illi ei autem qui in Spiritum Sanctum blasphemaverit non remittetur
11 And when they lead you into synagogues, and to magistrates, and potentates, do not ye be busy, how or what ye shall answer, or what ye shall say.
11 cum autem inducent vos in synagogas et ad magistratus et potestates nolite solliciti esse qualiter aut quid respondeatis aut quid dicatis
12 For the Holy Ghost shall teach you in that hour, what it behooveth you to say.
12 Spiritus enim Sanctus docebit vos in ipsa hora quae oporteat dicere
13 And one of the people said to him [Soothly some man of the company saith to him], Master, say to my brother, that he part with me the heritage.
13 ait autem quidam ei de turba magister dic fratri meo ut dividat mecum hereditatem
14 And he said to him, Man, who ordained me a doomsman, or a parter, on you [over you]?
14 at ille dixit ei homo quis me constituit iudicem aut divisorem super vos
15 And he said to them, See ye, and beware of all covetousness; for the life of a man is not in the abundance of the things, which he wieldeth.
15 dixitque ad illos videte et cavete ab omni avaritia quia non in abundantia cuiusquam vita eius est ex his quae possidet
16 And he told to them a likeness, and said, The field of a rich man brought forth plenteous fruits. [Soothly he said to them a likeness, saying, The field of some rich man brought forth plenteous fruits.]
16 dixit autem similitudinem ad illos dicens hominis cuiusdam divitis uberes fructus ager adtulit
17 And he thought within himself, and said [saying], What shall I do, for I have not whither I shall gather my fruits?
17 et cogitabat intra se dicens quid faciam quod non habeo quo congregem fructus meos
18 And he saith, This thing I shall do; I shall throw down my barns, and I shall make greater, and thither I shall gather all things that grow to me, and my goods.
18 et dixit hoc faciam destruam horrea mea et maiora faciam et illuc congregabo omnia quae nata sunt mihi et bona mea
19 And I shall say to my soul, Soul, thou hast many goods kept into full many years [thou hast many goods put up, or kept, into full many years]; rest thou, eat, drink, and make feast.
19 et dicam animae meae anima habes multa bona posita in annos plurimos requiesce comede bibe epulare
20 And God said to him, Fool, in this night they shall take thy life from thee. And whose shall those things be, that thou hast arrayed? [Soothly God said to him, Fool, in this night they shall ask of thee thy soul. Forsooth whose shall those things be, which thou hast made ready?]
20 dixit autem illi Deus stulte hac nocte animam tuam repetunt a te quae autem parasti cuius erunt
21 So is he that treasureth to himself, and is not rich in God.
21 sic est qui sibi thesaurizat et non est in Deum dives
22 And he said to his disciples, Therefore I say to you, do not ye be busy to your life, what ye shall eat, neither to your body, with what ye shall be clothed.
22 dixitque ad discipulos suos ideo dico vobis nolite solliciti esse animae quid manducetis neque corpori quid vestiamini
23 The life is more than meat, and the body more than clothing.
23 anima plus est quam esca et corpus quam vestimentum
24 Behold the crows, for they sow not, neither reap [nor reap], to which is neither cellar, nor barn, and God feedeth them. How much more ye be of more price than they [How much more be ye of more price than they(?)].
24 considerate corvos quia non seminant neque metunt quibus non est cellarium neque horreum et Deus pascit illos quanto magis vos pluris estis illis
25 And who of you by thinking may put one cubit to his stature [may add one cubit to his stature]?
25 quis autem vestrum cogitando potest adicere ad staturam suam cubitum unum
26 Therefore if ye be not able to do that that is least [Therefore if ye may not do that that is least], what be ye busy of other things?
26 si ergo neque quod minimum est potestis quid de ceteris solliciti estis
27 Behold ye the lilies of the field, how they wax; they travail not, neither spin. And I say to you, that neither Solomon in all his glory was clothed as one of these.
27 considerate lilia quomodo crescunt non laborant non nent dico autem vobis nec Salomon in omni gloria sua vestiebatur sicut unum ex istis
28 And if God clotheth thus the hay, that to day is in the field [which to day is in the field], and to morrow is cast into an oven; how much more you of little faith.
28 si autem faenum quod hodie in agro est et cras in clibanum mittitur Deus sic vestit quanto magis vos pusillae fidei
29 And do not ye seek, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; and do not ye be raised on high.
29 et vos nolite quaerere quid manducetis aut quid bibatis et nolite in sublime tolli
30 For folks of the world seek all these things; and your Father knoweth, that ye have need to all these things.
30 haec enim omnia gentes mundi quaerunt Pater autem vester scit quoniam his indigetis
31 Nevertheless seek ye first the kingdom of God, and all these things shall be cast to you.
31 verumtamen quaerite regnum Dei et haec omnia adicientur vobis
32 Do not ye, little flock, dread, for it pleased to your Father to give you a kingdom.
32 nolite timere pusillus grex quia conplacuit Patri vestro dare vobis regnum
33 Sell ye those things that ye have in possession [Sell ye those things that ye wield], and give ye alms. And make to you satchels that wax not old, treasure that faileth not in heavens, whither a thief approacheth not [whither a thief nigheth not], neither moth destroyeth.
33 vendite quae possidetis et date elemosynam facite vobis sacculos qui non veterescunt thesaurum non deficientem in caelis quo fur non adpropiat neque tinea corrumpit
34 For where is thy treasure, there thine heart shall be. [Forsooth where thy treasure is, there also thine heart shall be.]
34 ubi enim thesaurus vester est ibi et cor vestrum erit
35 Be your loins girded above, and lanterns burning in your hands;
35 sint lumbi vestri praecincti et lucernae ardentes
36 and be ye like to men that abide their lord [and ye like to men abiding their lord], when he shall turn again from the weddings, that when he shall come, and knock, at once [anon] they open to him.
36 et vos similes hominibus expectantibus dominum suum quando revertatur a nuptiis ut cum venerit et pulsaverit confestim aperiant ei
37 Blessed be those servants, that when the lord shall come [whom when the lord shall come], he shall find waking. Truly I say to you, that he shall gird himself, and make them sit to meat [and make them sit at the meat], and he shall go, and serve them.
37 beati servi illi quos cum venerit dominus invenerit vigilantes amen dico vobis quod praecinget se et faciet illos discumbere et transiens ministrabit illis
38 And if he [shall] come in the second waking, and if he come in the third waking, and find so, those servants be blessed.
38 et si venerit in secunda vigilia et si in tertia vigilia venerit et ita invenerit beati sunt servi illi
39 And know ye this thing, for if an husbandman knew, in what hour the thief would come, soothly he should wake, and not suffer his house to be mined [and suffer not his house to be mined].
39 hoc autem scitote quia si sciret pater familias qua hora fur veniret vigilaret utique et non sineret perfodiri domum suam
40 And be ye ready, for in what hour ye guess not, man's Son shall come.
40 et vos estote parati quia qua hora non putatis Filius hominis venit
41 And Peter said to him, Lord, sayest thou this parable to us, or to all?
41 ait autem ei Petrus Domine ad nos dicis hanc parabolam an et ad omnes
42 And the Lord said, Who, guessest thou, is a true dispenser, and prudent [Who, guessest thou, is a faithful dispenser, and prudent], whom the lord hath ordained on [upon] his household, to give them in time a measure of wheat?
42 dixit autem Dominus quis putas est fidelis dispensator et prudens quem constituet dominus super familiam suam ut det illis in tempore tritici mensuram
43 Blessed is that servant, that the lord when he cometh, shall find so doing. [Blessed is that servant, whom when the lord shall come, he shall find so doing.]
43 beatus ille servus quem cum venerit dominus invenerit ita facientem
44 Verily I say to you, that on [upon] all things that he wieldeth, he shall ordain him.
44 vere dico vobis quia supra omnia quae possidet constituet illum
45 That if that servant say in his heart, My lord tarrieth to come; and begin to smite children, and handmaidens, and eat, and drink, and be full-filled over measure [and be filled over measure],
45 quod si dixerit servus ille in corde suo moram facit dominus meus venire et coeperit percutere pueros et ancillas et edere et bibere et inebriari
46 the lord of that servant shall come, in the day that he hopeth not, and in the hour that he knoweth not, and shall part him (in pieces), and [shall] put his part with unfaithful men.
46 veniet dominus servi illius in die qua non sperat et hora qua nescit et dividet eum partemque eius cum infidelibus ponet
47 But that servant that knew the will of his lord, and made not him(self) ready, and did not after his will, shall be beaten with many beatings.
47 ille autem servus qui cognovit voluntatem domini sui et non praeparavit et non fecit secundum voluntatem eius vapulabit multas
48 But he that knew not, and did worthy things of strokes, shall be beaten with few. For to each man to whom much is given, much shall be asked of him; and they shall ask more of him, to whom they betook much.
48 qui autem non cognovit et fecit digna plagis vapulabit paucis omni autem cui multum datum est multum quaeretur ab eo et cui commendaverunt multum plus petent ab eo
49 I came to send fire into the earth, and what will I, but that it be kindled?
49 ignem veni mittere in terram et quid volo si accendatur
50 And I have to be baptized with a baptism, and how am I constrained, till that it be perfectly done [till it be perfectly done]?
50 baptisma autem habeo baptizari et quomodo coartor usque dum perficiatur
51 Ween ye [Guess ye], that I came to give peace into [the] earth? Nay, I say to you, but parting.
51 putatis quia pacem veni dare in terram non dico vobis sed separationem
52 For from this time there shall be five parted in one house; three shall be parted against twain, and twain shall be parted against three; [+Forsooth from this time, there shall be five parted in one house; three against two, and two against three;]
52 erunt enim ex hoc quinque in domo una divisi tres in duo et duo in tres
53 the father against the son, and the son against the father; the mother against the daughter, and the daughter against the mother; the husband's mother against the son's wife, and the son's wife against her husband's mother.
53 dividentur pater in filium et filius in patrem suum mater in filiam et filia in matrem socrus in nurum suam et nurus in socrum suam
54 And he said also to the people, When ye see a cloud rising from the sun going down, at once ye say [anon ye say], Rain cometh; and so it is done.
54 dicebat autem et ad turbas cum videritis nubem orientem ab occasu statim dicitis nimbus venit et ita fit
55 And when ye see the south blowing, ye say, That heat shall be; and it is done.
55 et cum austrum flantem dicitis quia aestus erit et fit
56 Hypocrites, ye know how to prove the face of heaven and of earth, but how prove ye not this time[?]
56 hypocritae faciem terrae et caeli nostis probare hoc autem tempus quomodo non probatis
57 But what and of yourselves ye deem not that that is just? [Forsooth why and of yourselves deem ye not this thing that is just?]
57 quid autem et a vobis ipsis non iudicatis quod iustum est
58 But when thou goest with thine adversary in the way to the prince, do busyness to be delivered from him; lest peradventure he take thee to the doomsman [Forsooth when thou goest with thine adversary to the prince in the way, give thou busyness to be delivered from him; lest peradventure he draw thee to the doomsman], and the doomsman betake thee to the masterful asker, and the masterful asker send thee into prison.
58 cum autem vadis cum adversario tuo ad principem in via da operam liberari ab illo ne forte trahat te apud iudicem et iudex tradat te exactori et exactor mittat te in carcerem
59 I say to thee, thou shalt not go out from thence [I say to thee, Thou shalt not go thence], till thou yield the last farthing.
59 dico tibi non exies inde donec etiam novissimum minutum reddas
