1 He entered Jericho and was passing through it.
1 Then Jesus entered and walked through Jericho.
2 A man was there named Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was rich.
2 There was a man there, his name Zacchaeus, the head tax man and quite rich.
3 He was trying to see who Jesus was, but on account of the crowd he could not, because he was short in stature.
3 He wanted desperately to see Jesus, but the crowd was in his way - he was a short man and couldn't see over the crowd.
4 So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree to see him, because he was going to pass that way.
4 So he ran on ahead and climbed up in a sycamore tree so he could see Jesus when he came by.
5 When Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, "Zacchaeus, hurry and come down; for I must stay at your house today."
5 When Jesus got to the tree, he looked up and said, "Zacchaeus, hurry down. Today is my day to be a guest in your home."
6 So he hurried down and was happy to welcome him.
6 Zacchaeus scrambled out of the tree, hardly believing his good luck, delighted to take Jesus home with him.
7 All who saw it began to grumble and said, "He has gone to be the guest of one who is a sinner."
7 Everyone who saw the incident was indignant and grumped, "What business does he have getting cozy with this crook?"
8 Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord, "Look, half of my possessions, Lord, I will give to the poor; and if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I will pay back four times as much."
8 Zacchaeus just stood there, a little stunned. He stammered apologetically, "Master, I give away half my income to the poor - and if I'm caught cheating, I pay four times the damages."
9 Then Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this house, because he too is a son of Abraham.
9 Jesus said, "Today is salvation day in this home! Here he is: Zacchaeus, son of Abraham!
10 For the Son of Man came to seek out and to save the lost."
10 For the Son of Man came to find and restore the lost."
11 As they were listening to this, he went on to tell a parable, because he was near Jerusalem, and because they supposed that the kingdom of God was to appear immediately.
11 While he had their attention, and because they were getting close to Jerusalem by this time and expectation was building that God's kingdom would appear any minute, he told this story:
12 So he said, "A nobleman went to a distant country to get royal power for himself and then return.
12 "There was once a man descended from a royal house who needed to make a long trip back to headquarters to get authorization for his rule and then return.
13 He summoned ten of his slaves, and gave them ten pounds, and said to them, "Do business with these until I come back.'
13 But first he called ten servants together, gave them each a sum of money, and instructed them, 'Operate with this until I return.'
14 But the citizens of his country hated him and sent a delegation after him, saying, "We do not want this man to rule over us.'
14 "But the citizens there hated him. So they sent a commission with a signed petition to oppose his rule: 'We don't want this man to rule us.'
15 When he returned, having received royal power, he ordered these slaves, to whom he had given the money, to be summoned so that he might find out what they had gained by trading.
15 "When he came back bringing the authorization of his rule, he called those ten servants to whom he had given the money to find out how they had done.
16 The first came forward and said, "Lord, your pound has made ten more pounds.'
16 "The first said, 'Master, I doubled your money.'
17 He said to him, "Well done, good slave! Because you have been trustworthy in a very small thing, take charge of ten cities.'
17 "He said, 'Good servant! Great work! Because you've been trustworthy in this small job, I'm making you governor of ten towns.'
18 Then the second came, saying, "Lord, your pound has made five pounds.'
18 "The second said, 'Master, I made a fifty percent profit on your money.'
19 He said to him, "And you, rule over five cities.'
19 "He said, 'I'm putting you in charge of five towns.'
20 Then the other came, saying, "Lord, here is your pound. I wrapped it up in a piece of cloth,
20 "The next servant said, 'Master, here's your money safe and sound. I kept it hidden in the cellar.
21 for I was afraid of you, because you are a harsh man; you take what you did not deposit, and reap what you did not sow.'
21 To tell you the truth, I was a little afraid. I know you have high standards and hate sloppiness, and don't suffer fools gladly.'
22 He said to him, "I will judge you by your own words, you wicked slave! You knew, did you, that I was a harsh man, taking what I did not deposit and reaping what I did not sow?
22 "He said, 'You're right that I don't suffer fools gladly - and you've acted the fool!
23 Why then did you not put my money into the bank? Then when I returned, I could have collected it with interest.'
23 Why didn't you at least invest the money in securities so I would have gotten a little interest on it?'
24 He said to the bystanders, "Take the pound from him and give it to the one who has ten pounds.'
24 "Then he said to those standing there, 'Take the money from him and give it to the servant who doubled my stake.'
25 (And they said to him, "Lord, he has ten pounds!')
25 "They said, 'But Master, he already has double . . .'
26 "I tell you, to all those who have, more will be given; but from those who have nothing, even what they have will be taken away.
26 "He said, 'That's what I mean: Risk your life and get more than you ever dreamed of. Play it safe and end up holding the bag.
27 But as for these enemies of mine who did not want me to be king over them—bring them here and slaughter them in my presence.' "
27 "'As for these enemies of mine who petitioned against my rule, clear them out of here. I don't want to see their faces around here again.'"
28 After he had said this, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.
28 After saying these things, Jesus headed straight up to Jerusalem.
29 When he had come near Bethphage and Bethany, at the place called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of the disciples,
29 When he got near Bethphage and Bethany at the mountain called Olives, he sent off two of the disciples with instructions:
30 saying, "Go into the village ahead of you, and as you enter it you will find tied there a colt that has never been ridden. Untie it and bring it here.
30 "Go to the village across from you. As soon as you enter, you'll find a colt tethered, one that has never been ridden. Untie it and bring it.
31 If anyone asks you, "Why are you untying it?' just say this, "The Lord needs it.' "
31 If anyone says anything, asks, 'What are you doing?' say, 'His Master needs him.'"
32 So those who were sent departed and found it as he had told them.
32 The two left and found it just as he said.
33 As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, "Why are you untying the colt?"
33 As they were untying the colt, its owners said, "What are you doing untying the colt?"
34 They said, "The Lord needs it."
34 They said, "His Master needs him."
35 Then they brought it to Jesus; and after throwing their cloaks on the colt, they set Jesus on it.
35 They brought the colt to Jesus. Then, throwing their coats on its back, they helped Jesus get on.
36 As he rode along, people kept spreading their cloaks on the road.
36 As he rode, the people gave him a grand welcome, throwing their coats on the street.
37 As he was now approaching the path down from the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to praise God joyfully with a loud voice for all the deeds of power that they had seen,
37 Right at the crest, where Mount Olives begins its descent, the whole crowd of disciples burst into enthusiastic praise over all the mighty works they had witnessed:
38 saying, "Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven, and glory in the highest heaven!"
38 Blessed is he who comes, the king in God's name! All's well in heaven! Glory in the high places!
39 Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, "Teacher, order your disciples to stop."
39 Some Pharisees from the crowd told him, "Teacher, get your disciples under control!"
40 He answered, "I tell you, if these were silent, the stones would shout out."
40 But he said, "If they kept quiet, the stones would do it for them, shouting praise."
41 As he came near and saw the city, he wept over it,
41 When the city came into view, he wept over it.
42 saying, "If you, even you, had only recognized on this day the things that make for peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes.
42 "If you had only recognized this day, and everything that was good for you! But now it's too late.
43 Indeed, the days will come upon you, when your enemies will set up ramparts around you and surround you, and hem you in on every side.
43 In the days ahead your enemies are going to bring up their heavy artillery and surround you, pressing in from every side.
44 They will crush you to the ground, you and your children within you, and they will not leave within you one stone upon another; because you did not recognize the time of your visitation from God."
44 They'll smash you and your babies on the pavement. Not one stone will be left intact. All this because you didn't recognize and welcome God's personal visit."
45 Then he entered the temple and began to drive out those who were selling things there;
45 Going into the Temple he began to throw out everyone who had set up shop, selling everything and anything.
46 and he said, "It is written, "My house shall be a house of prayer'; but you have made it a den of robbers."
46 He said, "It's written in Scripture, My house is a house of prayer; You have turned it into a religious bazaar."
47 Every day he was teaching in the temple. The chief priests, the scribes, and the leaders of the people kept looking for a way to kill him;
47 From then on he taught each day in the Temple. The high priests, religion scholars, and the leaders of the people were trying their best to find a way to get rid of him.
48 but they did not find anything they could do, for all the people were spellbound by what they heard.
48 But with the people hanging on every word he spoke, they couldn't come up with anything.
