The Message Bible MSG
1 Now the feast of matzah drew near, which is called the Pesach.
1
The Feast of Unleavened Bread, also called Passover, drew near.
2 The chief Kohanim and the Sofrim sought how they might put him to death, for they feared the people.
2
The high priests and religion scholars were looking for a way to do away with Jesus but, fearful of the people, they were also looking for a way to cover their tracks.
3 Hasatan entered into Yehudah, who was called Ish-K'riot, being numbered with the twelve.
3
That's when Satan entered Judas, the one called Iscariot. He was one of the Twelve.
4 He went away, and talked with the chief Kohanim and captains about how he might deliver him to them.
4
Leaving the others, he conferred with the high priests and the Temple guards about how he might betray Jesus to them.
5 They were glad, and agreed to give him money.
5
They couldn't believe their good luck and agreed to pay him well.
6 He consented, and sought an opportunity to deliver him to them in the absence of the multitude.
6
He gave them his word and started looking for a way to betray Jesus, but out of sight of the crowd.
7 The day of matzah came, on which the Pesach must be sacrificed.
7
The Day of Unleavened Bread came, the day the Passover lamb was butchered.
8 He sent Kefa and Yochanan, saying, "Go and prepare the Pesach for us, that we may eat."
8
Jesus sent Peter and John off, saying, "Go prepare the Passover for us so we can eat it together."
9 They said to him, "Where do you want us to prepare?"
9
They said, "Where do you want us to do this?"
10 He said to them, "Behold, when you have entered into the city, a man carrying a pitcher of water will meet you. Follow him into the house which he enters.
10
He said, "Keep your eyes open as you enter the city. A man carrying a water jug will meet you. Follow him home.
11 Tell the master of the house, 'The Teacher says to you, "Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Pesach with my talmidim?"'
11
Then speak with the owner of the house: The Teacher wants to know, 'Where is the guest room where I can eat the Passover meal with my disciples?'
12 He will show you a large, furnished upper room. Make preparations there."
12
He will show you a spacious second-story room, swept and ready. Prepare the meal there."
13 They went, found things as he had told them, and they prepared the Pesach.
13
They left, found everything just as he told them, and prepared the Passover meal.
14 When the hour had come, he sat down with the twelve apostles.
14
When it was time, he sat down, all the apostles with him,
15 He said to them, "I have earnestly desired to eat this Pesach with you before I suffer,
15
and said, "You've no idea how much I have looked forward to eating this Passover meal with you before I enter my time of suffering.
16 for I tell you, I will no longer by any means eat of it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God."
16
It's the last one I'll eat until we all eat it together in the kingdom of God."
17 He received a cup, and when he had given thanks, he said, "Take this, and share it among yourselves,
17
Taking the cup, he blessed it, then said, "Take this and pass it among you.
18 for I tell you, I will not drink at all again from the fruit of the vine, until the kingdom of God comes."
18
As for me, I'll not drink wine again until the kingdom of God arrives."
19 He took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and gave to them, saying, "This is my body which is given for you. Do this in memory of me."
19
Taking bread, he blessed it, broke it, and gave it to them, saying, "This is my body, given for you. Eat it in my memory."
20 He took the cup in like manner after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood, that which is poured out for you.
20
He did the same with the cup after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant written in my blood, blood poured out for you.
21 But behold, the hand of him who betrays me is with me on the table.
21
"Do you realize that the hand of the one who is betraying me is at this moment on this table?
22 The Son of Man indeed goes, as it has been determined, but woe to that man through whom he is betrayed!"
22
It's true that the Son of Man is going down a path already marked out - no surprises there. But for the one who turns him in, turns traitor to the Son of Man, this is doomsday."
23 They began to question among themselves, which of them it was that would do this thing.
23
They immediately became suspicious of each other and began quizzing one another, wondering who might be about to do this.
24 There arose also a contention among them, which of them was considered to be greatest.
24
Within minutes they were bickering over who of them would end up the greatest.
25 He said to them, "The kings of the Goyim lord it over them, and those who have authority over them are called 'benefactors.'
25
But Jesus intervened: "Kings like to throw their weight around and people in authority like to give themselves fancy titles.
26 But not so with you. But one who is the greater among you, let him become as the younger, and one who is governing, as one who serves.
26
It's not going to be that way with you. Let the senior among you become like the junior; let the leader act the part of the servant.
27 For who is greater, one who sits at the table, or one who serves? Isn't it he who sits at the table? But I am in the midst of you as one who serves.
27
"Who would you rather be: the one who eats the dinner or the one who serves the dinner? You'd rather eat and be served, right? But I've taken my place among you as the one who serves.
28 But you are those who have continued with me in my temptations.
28
And you've stuck with me through thick and thin.
29 I appoint to you a kingdom, even as my Father appointed to me,
29
Now I confer on you the royal authority my Father conferred on me
30 that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom. You will sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Yisra'el."
30
so you can eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and be strengthened as you take up responsibilities among the congregations of God's people.
31 The Lord said, "Shim`on, Shim`on, behold, Hasatan asked to have you, that he might sift you as wheat,
31
"Simon, stay on your toes. Satan has tried his best to separate all of you from me, like chaff from wheat.
32 but I prayed for you, that your faith wouldn't fail. You, when once you have turned again, establish your brothers."
32
Simon, I've prayed for you in particular that you not give in or give out. When you have come through the time of testing, turn to your companions and give them a fresh start."
33 He said to him, "Lord, I am ready to go with you both to prison and to death!"
33
Peter said, "Master, I'm ready for anything with you. I'd go to jail for you. I'd die for you!"
34 He said, "I tell you, Kefa, the rooster will by no means crow today, before you deny that you know me three times."
34
Jesus said, "I'm sorry to have to tell you this, Peter, but before the rooster crows you will have three times denied that you know me."
35 He said to them, "When I sent you out without purse, and wallet, and shoes, did you lack anything?" They said, "Nothing."
35
Then Jesus said, "When I sent you out and told you to travel light, to take only the bare necessities, did you get along all right?" "Certainly," they said, "we got along just fine."
36 Then he said to them, "But now, whoever has a purse, let him take it, and likewise a wallet. Whoever has none, let him sell his cloak, and buy a sword.
36
He said, "This is different. Get ready for trouble. Look to what you'll need; there are difficult times ahead. Pawn your coat and get a sword.
37 For I tell you that this which is written must still be fulfilled in me: 'He was counted with the lawless.' For that which concerns me has an end."
37
What was written in Scripture, 'He was lumped in with the criminals,' gets its final meaning in me. Everything written about me is now coming to a conclusion."
38 They said, "Lord, behold, here are two swords." He said to them, "That is enough."
38
They said, "Look, Master, two swords!" But he said, "Enough of that; no more sword talk!"
39 He came out, and went, as his custom was, to the Mount of Olives. His talmidim also followed him.
39
Leaving there, he went, as he so often did, to Mount Olives. The disciples followed him.
40 When he was at the place, he said to them, "Pray that you don't enter into temptation."
40
When they arrived at the place, he said, "Pray that you don't give in to temptation."
41 He was withdrawn from them about a stone's throw, and he knelt down and prayed,
41
He pulled away from them about a stone's throw, knelt down, and prayed,
42 saying, "Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done."
42
"Father, remove this cup from me. But please, not what I want. What do you want?"
43 An angel from heaven appeared to him, strengthening him.
43
At once an angel from heaven was at his side, strengthening him.
44 Being in agony he prayed more earnestly. His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down on the ground.
44
He prayed on all the harder. Sweat, wrung from him like drops of blood, poured off his face.
45 When he rose up from his prayer, he came to the talmidim, and found them sleeping because of grief,
45
He got up from prayer, went back to the disciples and found them asleep, drugged by grief.
46 and said to them, "Why do you sleep? Rise and pray that you may not enter into temptation."
46
He said, "What business do you have sleeping? Get up. Pray so you won't give in to temptation."
47 While he was still speaking, behold, a multitude, and he who was called Yehudah, one of the twelve, went in front of them. He came near to Yeshua to kiss him.
47
No sooner were the words out of his mouth than a crowd showed up, Judas, the one from the Twelve, in the lead. He came right up to Jesus to kiss him.
48 But Yeshua said to him, "Yehudah, do you betray the Son of Man with a kiss?"
48
Jesus said, "Judas, you would betray the Son of Man with a kiss?"
49 When those who were around him saw what was about to happen, they said to him, "Lord, shall we strike with the sword?"
49
When those with him saw what was happening, they said, "Master, shall we fight?"
50 A certain one of them struck the servant of the Kohen Gadol, and cut off his right ear.
50
One of them took a swing at the Chief Priest's servant and cut off his right ear.
51 But Yeshua answered, "Let me at least do this" -- and he touched his ear, and healed him.
51
Jesus said, "Let them be. Even in this." Then, touching the servant's ear, he healed him.
52 Yeshua said to the chief Kohanim, captains of the temple, and Zakenim, who had come against him, "Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs?
52
Jesus spoke to those who had come - high priests, Temple police, religion leaders: "What is this, jumping me with swords and clubs as if I were a dangerous criminal?
53 When I was with you in the temple daily, you didn't stretch out your hands against me. But this is your hour, and the power of darkness."
53
Day after day I've been with you in the Temple and you've not so much as lifted a hand against me. But do it your way - it's a dark night, a dark hour."
54 They seized him, and led him away, and brought him into the Kohen Gadol's house. But Kefa followed from a distance.
54
Arresting Jesus, they marched him off and took him into the house of the Chief Priest. Peter followed, but at a safe distance.
55 When they had kindled a fire in the midst of the court, and had sat down together, Kefa sat in the midst of them.
55
In the middle of the courtyard some people had started a fire and were sitting around it, trying to keep warm.
56 A certain servant girl saw him as he sat in the light, and looking intently at him, said, "This man also was with him."
56
One of the serving maids sitting at the fire noticed him, then took a second look and said, "This man was with him!"
57 He denied Yeshua, saying, "Woman, I don't know him."
57
He denied it, "Woman, I don't even know him."
58 After a little while someone else saw him, and said, "You also are one of them!" But Kefa answered, "Man, I am not!"
58
A short time later, someone else noticed him and said, "You're one of them." But Peter denied it: "Man, I am not."
59 After about one hour passed, another confidently affirmed, saying, "Truly this man also was with him, for he is a Gelili!"
59
About an hour later, someone else spoke up, really adamant: "He's got to have been with him! He's got 'Galilean' written all over him."
60 But Kefa said, "Man, I don't know what you are talking about!" Immediately, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed.
60
Peter said, "Man, I don't know what you're talking about." At that very moment, the last word hardly off his lips, a rooster crowed.
61 The Lord turned, and looked at Kefa. Kefa remembered the Lord's word, how he said to him, "Before the rooster crows you will deny me three times."
61
Just then, the Master turned and looked at Peter. Peter remembered what the Master had said to him: "Before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times."
62 He went out, and wept bitterly.
62
He went out and cried and cried and cried.
63 The men who held Yeshua mocked him and beat him.
63
The men in charge of Jesus began poking fun at him, slapping him around.
64 Having blindfolded him, they struck him on the face and asked him, "Prophesy! Who is the one who struck you?"
64
They put a blindfold on him and taunted, "Who hit you that time?"
65 They spoke many other things against him, insulting him.
65
They were having a grand time with him.
66 As soon as it was day, the assembly of the Zakenim of the people was gathered together, both chief Kohanim and Sofrim, and they led him away into their council, saying,
66
When it was morning, the religious leaders of the people and the high priests and scholars all got together and brought him before their High Council.
67 "If you are the Messiah, tell us." But he said to them, "If I tell you, you won't believe,
67
They said, "Are you the Messiah?"
68 and if I ask, you will in no way answer me or let me go.
68
If I asked what you meant by your question, you wouldn't answer me.
69 From now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God."
69
So here's what I have to say: From here on the Son of Man takes his place at God's right hand, the place of power."
70 They all said, "Are you then the Son of God?" He said to them, "You say it, because I AM."
70
They all said, "So you admit you claim to be the Son of God?" "You're the ones who keep saying it," he said.
71 They said, "Why do we need any more witness? For we ourselves have heard from his own mouth!"
71
But they had made up their minds, "Why do we need any more evidence? We've all heard him as good as say it himself."
