NLT

1 In the fifteenth year of the rule of Caesar Tiberius - it was while Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea; Herod, ruler of Galilee; his brother Philip, ruler of Iturea and Trachonitis; Lysanias, ruler of Abilene;
1 It was now the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius, the Roman emperor. Pontius Pilate was governor over Judea; Herod Antipas was ruler over Galilee; his brother Philip was ruler over Iturea and Traconitis; Lysanias was ruler over Abilene.
2 during the Chief-Priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas - John, Zachariah's son, out in the desert at the time, received a message from God.
2 Annas and Caiaphas were the high priests. At this time a message from God came to John son of Zechariah, who was living in the wilderness.
3 He went all through the country around the Jordan River preaching a baptism of life-change leading to forgiveness of sins,
3 Then John went from place to place on both sides of the Jordan River, preaching that people should be baptized to show that they had repented of their sins and turned to God to be forgiven.
4 as described in the words of Isaiah the prophet: Thunder in the desert! "Prepare God's arrival! Make the road smooth and straight!
4 Isaiah had spoken of John when he said, “He is a voice shouting in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way for the LORD ’s coming! Clear the road for him!
5 Every ditch will be filled in, Every bump smoothed out, The detours straightened out, All the ruts paved over.
5 The valleys will be filled, and the mountains and hills made level. The curves will be straightened, and the rough places made smooth.
6 Everyone will be there to see The parade of God's salvation."
6 And then all people will see the salvation sent from God.’”
7 When crowds of people came out for baptism because it was the popular thing to do, John exploded: "Brood of snakes! What do you think you're doing slithering down here to the river? Do you think a little water on your snakeskins is going to deflect God's judgment?
7 When the crowds came to John for baptism, he said, “You brood of snakes! Who warned you to flee God’s coming wrath?
8 It's your life that must change, not your skin. And don't think you can pull rank by claiming Abraham as 'father.' Being a child of Abraham is neither here nor there - children of Abraham are a dime a dozen. God can make children from stones if he wants.
8 Prove by the way you live that you have repented of your sins and turned to God. Don’t just say to each other, ‘We’re safe, for we are descendants of Abraham.’ That means nothing, for I tell you, God can create children of Abraham from these very stones.
9 What counts is your life. Is it green and blossoming? Because if it's deadwood, it goes on the fire."
9 Even now the ax of God’s judgment is poised, ready to sever the roots of the trees. Yes, every tree that does not produce good fruit will be chopped down and thrown into the fire.”
10 The crowd asked him, "Then what are we supposed to do?"
10 The crowds asked, “What should we do?”
11 "If you have two coats, give one away," he said. "Do the same with your food."
11 John replied, “If you have two shirts, give one to the poor. If you have food, share it with those who are hungry.”
12 Tax men also came to be baptized and said, "Teacher, what should we do?"
12 Even corrupt tax collectors came to be baptized and asked, “Teacher, what should we do?”
13 He told them, "No more extortion - collect only what is required by law."
13 He replied, “Collect no more taxes than the government requires.”
14 Soldiers asked him, "And what should we do?" He told them, "No shakedowns, no blackmail - and be content with your rations."
14 “What should we do?” asked some soldiers. John replied, “Don’t extort money or make false accusations. And be content with your pay.”
15 The interest of the people by now was building. They were all beginning to wonder, "Could this John be the Messiah?"
15 Everyone was expecting the Messiah to come soon, and they were eager to know whether John might be the Messiah.
16 But John intervened: "I'm baptizing you here in the river. The main character in this drama, to whom I'm a mere stagehand, will ignite the kingdom life, a fire, the Holy Spirit within you, changing you from the inside out.
16 John answered their questions by saying, “I baptize you with water; but someone is coming soon who is greater than I am—so much greater that I’m not even worthy to be his slave and untie the straps of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.
17 He's going to clean house - make a clean sweep of your lives. He'll place everything true in its proper place before God; everything false he'll put out with the trash to be burned."
17 He is ready to separate the chaff from the wheat with his winnowing fork. Then he will clean up the threshing area, gathering the wheat into his barn but burning the chaff with never-ending fire.”
18 There was a lot more of this - words that gave strength to the people, words that put heart in them. The Message!
18 John used many such warnings as he announced the Good News to the people.
19 But Herod, the ruler, stung by John's rebuke in the matter of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife,
19 John also publicly criticized Herod Antipas, the ruler of Galilee, for marrying Herodias, his brother’s wife, and for many other wrongs he had done.
20 capped his long string of evil deeds with this outrage: He put John in jail.
20 So Herod put John in prison, adding this sin to his many others.
21 After all the people were baptized, Jesus was baptized. As he was praying, the sky opened up
21 One day when the crowds were being baptized, Jesus himself was baptized. As he was praying, the heavens opened,
22 and the Holy Spirit, like a dove descending, came down on him. And along with the Spirit, a voice: "You are my Son, chosen and marked by my love, pride of my life." Son of Adam, Son of God
22 and the Holy Spirit, in bodily form, descended on him like a dove. And a voice from heaven said, “You are my dearly loved Son, and you bring me great joy. ”
