The Message Bible MSG
1 Now it happened, while the multitude pressed on him and heard the word of God, that he was standing by the lake of Ginosar.
1
Once when he was standing on the shore of Lake Gennesaret, the crowd was pushing in on him to better hear the Word of God.
2 He saw two boats standing by the lake, but the fishermen had gone out of them, and were washing their nets.
2
He noticed two boats tied up. The fishermen had just left them and were out scrubbing their nets.
3 He entered into one of the boats, which was Shim`on's, and asked him to put out a little from the land. He sat down and taught the multitudes out of the boat.
3
He climbed into the boat that was Simon's and asked him to put out a little from the shore. Sitting there, using the boat for a pulpit, he taught the crowd.
4 When he had finished speaking, he said to Shim`on, "Put out into the deep, and let down your nets for a catch."
4
When he finished teaching, he said to Simon, "Push out into deep water and let your nets out for a catch."
5 Shim`on answered him, "Master, we worked all night, and took nothing; but at your word I will let down the net."
5
Simon said, "Master, we've been fishing hard all night and haven't caught even a minnow. But if you say so, I'll let out the nets."
6 When they had done this, they caught a great multitude of fish, and their net was breaking.
6
It was no sooner said than done - a huge haul of fish, straining the nets past capacity.
7 They beckoned to their partners in the other boat, that they should come and help them. They came, and filled both boats, so that they began to sink.
7
They waved to their partners in the other boat to come help them. They filled both boats, nearly swamping them with the catch.
8 But Shim`on Kefa, when he saw it, fell down at Yeshua' knees, saying, "Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, Lord."
8
Simon Peter, when he saw it, fell to his knees before Jesus. "Master, leave. I'm a sinner and can't handle this holiness. Leave me to myself."
9 For he was amazed, and all who were with him, at the catch of fish which they had caught;
9
When they pulled in that catch of fish, awe overwhelmed Simon and everyone with him.
10 and so also were Ya`akov and Yochanan, sons of Zavdai, who were partners with Shim`on. Yeshua said to Shim`on, "Don't be afraid. From now on you will catch men alive."
10
It was the same with James and John, Zebedee's sons, coworkers with Simon.
11 When they had brought their boats to land, they left everything, and followed him.
11
They pulled their boats up on the beach, left them, nets and all, and followed him.
12 It happened, while he was in one of the cities, behold, there was a man full of leprosy. When he saw Yeshua, he fell on his face, and begged him, saying, "Lord, if you want to, you can make me clean."
12
One day in one of the villages there was a man covered with leprosy. When he saw Jesus he fell down before him in prayer and said, "If you want to, you can cleanse me."
13 He stretched forth his hand, and touched him, saying, "I want to. Be made clean." Immediately the leprosy departed from him.
13
Jesus put out his hand, touched him, and said, "I want to. Be clean." Then and there his skin was smooth, the leprosy gone.
14 He charged him to "Tell no one, But go your way, and show yourself to the Kohen, and offer for your cleansing according to what Moshe commanded, for a testimony to them."
14
Jesus instructed him, "Don't talk about this all over town. Just quietly present your healed self to the priest, along with the offering ordered by Moses. Your cleansed and obedient life, not your words, will bear witness to what I have done."
15 But the report concerning him spread much more, and great multitudes came together to hear, and to be healed by him of their infirmities.
15
But the man couldn't keep it to himself, and the word got out. Soon a large crowd of people had gathered to listen and be healed of their ailments.
16 But he withdrew himself into the desert, and prayed.
16
As often as possible Jesus withdrew to out-of-the-way places for prayer.
17 It happened on one of those days, that he was teaching; and there were Perushim and teachers of the law sitting by, who had come out of every village of the Galil, Yehudah, and Yerushalayim. The power of the Lord was with him to heal them.
17
One day as he was teaching, Pharisees and religion teachers were sitting around. They had come from nearly every village in Galilee and Judea, even as far away as Jerusalem, to be there. The healing power of God was on him.
18 Behold, men brought a paralyzed man on a cot, and they sought to bring him in to lay before him.
18
Some men arrived carrying a paraplegic on a stretcher. They were looking for a way to get into the house and set him before Jesus.
19 Not finding a way to bring him in because of the multitude, they went up to the housetop, and let him down through the tiles with his cot into the midst before Yeshua.
19
When they couldn't find a way in because of the crowd, they went up on the roof, removed some tiles, and let him down in the middle of everyone, right in front of Jesus.
20 Seeing their faith, he said to him, "Man, your sins are forgiven you."
20
Impressed by their bold belief, he said, "Friend, I forgive your sins."
21 The Sofrim and the Perushim began to reason, saying, "Who is this that speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone?"
21
That set the religion scholars and Pharisees buzzing. "Who does he think he is? That's blasphemous talk! God and only God can forgive sins."
22 But Yeshua, perceiving their thoughts, answered them, "Why are you reasoning so in your hearts?
22
Jesus knew exactly what they were thinking and said, "Why all this gossipy whispering?
23 Which is easier to say, 'Your sins are forgiven you;' or to say, 'Arise and walk?'
23
Which is simpler: to say 'I forgive your sins,' or to say 'Get up and start walking'?
24 But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on eretz to forgive sins" (he said to the paralyzed man), "I tell you, arise, and take up your cot, and go to your house."
24
Well, just so it's clear that I'm the Son of Man and authorized to do either, or both. . . ." He now spoke directly to the paraplegic: "Get up. Take your bedroll and go home."
25 Immediately he rose up before them, and took up that which he was laying on, and departed to his house, glorifying God.
25
Without a moment's hesitation, he did it - got up, took his blanket, and left for home, giving glory to God all the way.
26 Amazement took hold on all, and they glorified God. They were filled with fear, saying, "We have seen strange things today."
26
The people rubbed their eyes, incredulous - and then also gave glory to God. Awestruck, they said, "We've never seen anything like that!"
27 After these things he went out, and saw a tax collector named Levi sitting at the tax office, and said to him, "Follow me!"
27
After this he went out and saw a man named Levi at his work collecting taxes. Jesus said, "Come along with me."
28 He left everything, and rose up and followed him.
28
And he did - walked away from everything and went with him.
29 Levi made him a great feast for him in his house. There was a great crowd of tax collectors and others who were reclining with them.
29
Levi gave a large dinner at his home for Jesus. Everybody was there, tax men and other disreputable characters as guests at the dinner.
30 Their Sofrim and the Perushim murmured against his talmidim, saying, "Why do you eat and drink with the tax collectors and sinners?"
30
The Pharisees and their religion scholars came to his disciples greatly offended. "What is he doing eating and drinking with crooks and 'sinners'?"
31 Yeshua answered them, "Those who are healthy have no need for a physician, but those who are sick do.
31
Jesus heard about it and spoke up, "Who needs a doctor: the healthy or the sick?
32 I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance."
32
I'm here inviting outsiders, not insiders - an invitation to a changed life, changed inside and out."
33 They said to him, "Why do Yochanan's talmidim often fast and pray, likewise also the talmidim of the Perushim, but yours eat and drink?"
33
They asked him, "John's disciples are well-known for keeping fasts and saying prayers. Also the Pharisees. But you seem to spend most of your time at parties. Why?"
34 He said to them, "Can you make the friends of the bridegroom fast, while the bridegroom is with them?
34
Jesus said, "When you're celebrating a wedding, you don't skimp on the cake and wine. You feast. Later you may need to pull in your belt, but this isn't the time. As long as the bride and groom are with you, you have a good time.
35 But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them. Then they will fast in those days."
35
When the groom is gone, the fasting can begin. No one throws cold water on a friendly bonfire. This is Kingdom Come!
36 He also told a parable to them. "No one puts a piece from a new garment on an old garment, or else he will tear the new, and also the piece from the new will not match the old.
36
"No one cuts up a fine silk scarf to patch old work clothes; you want fabrics that match.
37 No one puts new wine into old wineskins, or else the new wine will burst the skins, and it will be spilled, and the skins will be destroyed.
37
And you don't put wine in old, cracked bottles;
38 But new wine must be put into fresh wineskins, and both are preserved.
38
you get strong, clean bottles for your fresh vintage wine.
39 No man having drunk old wine immediately desires new, for he says, 'The old is better.'"
39
And no one who has ever tasted fine aged wine prefers unaged wine."
