The Message Bible MSG
1 As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage and Bethany at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of his disciples,
1
When they were nearing Jerusalem, at Bethphage and Bethany on Mount Olives, he sent off two of the disciples with instructions:
2 saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and just as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here.
2
"Go to the village across from you. As soon as you enter, you'll find a colt tethered, one that has never yet been ridden. Untie it and bring it.
3 If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ say, ‘The Lord needs it and will send it back here shortly.’ ”
3
If anyone asks, 'What are you doing?' say, 'The Master needs him, and will return him right away.'"
4 They went and found a colt outside in the street, tied at a doorway. As they untied it,
4
They went and found a colt tied to a door at the street corner and untied it.
5 some people standing there asked, “What are you doing, untying that colt?”
5
Some of those standing there said, "What are you doing untying that colt?"
6 They answered as Jesus had told them to, and the people let them go.
6
The disciples replied exactly as Jesus had instructed them, and the people let them alone.
7 When they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks over it, he sat on it.
7
They brought the colt to Jesus, spread their coats on it, and he mounted.
8 Many people spread their cloaks on the road, while others spread branches they had cut in the fields.
8
The people gave him a wonderful welcome, some throwing their coats on the street, others spreading out rushes they had cut in the fields.
9 Those who went ahead and those who followed shouted, “Hosanna! ” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”
9
Running ahead and following after, they were calling out, Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in God's name!
10 “Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David!” “Hosanna in the highest heaven!”
10
Blessed the coming kingdom of our father David! Hosanna in highest heaven!
11 Jesus entered Jerusalem and went into the temple courts. He looked around at everything, but since it was already late, he went out to Bethany with the Twelve.
11
He entered Jerusalem, then entered the Temple. He looked around, taking it all in. But by now it was late, so he went back to Bethany with the Twelve.
12 The next day as they were leaving Bethany, Jesus was hungry.
12
As they left Bethany the next day, he was hungry.
13 Seeing in the distance a fig tree in leaf, he went to find out if it had any fruit. When he reached it, he found nothing but leaves, because it was not the season for figs.
13
Off in the distance he saw a fig tree in full leaf. He came up to it expecting to find something for breakfast, but found nothing but fig leaves. (It wasn't yet the season for figs.)
14 Then he said to the tree, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again.” And his disciples heard him say it.
14
He addressed the tree: "No one is going to eat fruit from you again - ever!" And his disciples overheard him.
15 On reaching Jerusalem, Jesus entered the temple courts and began driving out those who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves,
15
They arrived at Jerusalem. Immediately on entering the Temple Jesus started throwing out everyone who had set up shop there, buying and selling. He kicked over the tables of the bankers and the stalls of the pigeon merchants.
16 and would not allow anyone to carry merchandise through the temple courts.
16
He didn't let anyone even carry a basket through the Temple.
17 And as he taught them, he said, “Is it not written: ‘My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations’? But you have made it ‘a den of robbers.’”
17
And then he taught them, quoting this text: My house was designated a house of prayer for the nations; You've turned it into a hangout for thieves.
18 The chief priests and the teachers of the law heard this and began looking for a way to kill him, for they feared him, because the whole crowd was amazed at his teaching.
18
The high priests and religion scholars heard what was going on and plotted how they might get rid of him. They panicked, for the entire crowd was carried away by his teaching.
19 When evening came, Jesus and his disciples went out of the city.
19
At evening, Jesus and his disciples left the city.
20 In the morning, as they went along, they saw the fig tree withered from the roots.
20
In the morning, walking along the road, they saw the fig tree, shriveled to a dry stick.
21 Peter remembered and said to Jesus, “Rabbi, look! The fig tree you cursed has withered!”
21
Peter, remembering what had happened the previous day, said to him, "Rabbi, look - the fig tree you cursed is shriveled up!"
22 “Have faith in God,” Jesus answered.
22
Jesus was matter-of-fact: "Embrace this God-life. Really embrace it,
23 “TrulyI tell you, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and does not doubt in their heart but believes that what they say will happen, it will be done for them.
23
and nothing will be too much for you. This mountain, for instance: Just say, 'Go jump in the lake' - no shuffling or shilly-shallying - and it's as good as done.
24 Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.
24
That's why I urge you to pray for absolutely everything, ranging from small to large. Include everything as you embrace this God-life, and you'll get God's everything.
25 And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive them, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins.”
25
And when you assume the posture of prayer, remember that it's not all asking. If you have anything against someone, forgive - only then will your heavenly Father be inclined to also wipe your slate clean of sins."
27 They arrived again in Jerusalem, and while Jesus was walking in the temple courts, the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders came to him.
27
Then when they were back in Jerusalem once again, as they were walking through the Temple, the high priests, religion scholars, and leaders came up
28 “By what authority are you doing these things?” they asked. “And who gave you authority to do this?”
28
and demanded, "Show us your credentials. Who authorized you to speak and act like this?"
29 Jesus replied, “I will ask you one question. Answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I am doing these things.
29
Jesus responded, "First let me ask you a question. Answer my question and then I'll present my credentials.
30 John’s baptism—was it from heaven, or of human origin? Tell me!”
30
About the baptism of John - who authorized it: heaven or humans? Tell me."
31 They discussed it among themselves and said, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will ask, ‘Then why didn’t you believe him?’
31
They were on the spot, and knew it. They pulled back into a huddle and whispered, "If we say 'heaven,' he'll ask us why we didn't believe John;
32 But if we say, ‘Of human origin’ …” (They feared the people, for everyone held that John really was a prophet.)
32
if we say 'humans,' we'll be up against it with the people because they all hold John up as a prophet."
33 So they answered Jesus, “We don’t know.” Jesus said, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.”
33
They decided to concede that round to Jesus. "We don't know," they said. Jesus replied, "Then I won't answer your question either."
