Matthew 13

HNV

MSG

1 On that day Yeshua went out of the house, and sat by the seaside.
1 At about that same time Jesus left the house and sat on the beach.
2 Great multitudes gathered to him, so that he entered into a boat, and sat, and all the multitude stood on the beach.
2 In no time at all a crowd gathered along the shoreline, forcing him to get into a boat.
3 He spoke to them many things in parables, saying, "Behold, a farmer went forth to sow.
3 Using the boat as a pulpit, he addressed his congregation, telling stories.
4 As he sowed, some seeds fell by the roadside, and the birds came and devoured them.
4 As he scattered the seed, some of it fell on the road, and birds ate it.
5 Others fell on rocky ground, where they didn't have much soil, and immediately they sprang up, because they had no depth of eretz.
5 Some fell in the gravel; it sprouted quickly but didn't put down roots,
6 When the sun had risen, they were scorched. Because they had no root, they withered away.
6 so when the sun came up it withered just as quickly.
7 Others fell on thorns. The thorns grew up and choked them:
7 Some fell in the weeds; as it came up, it was strangled by the weeds.
8 and others fell on good soil, and yielded fruit: some one hundred times, some sixty, and some thirty.
8 Some fell on good earth, and produced a harvest beyond his wildest dreams.
9 He who has ears to hear, let him hear."
9 "Are you listening to this? Really listening?"
10 The talmidim came, and said to him, "Why do you speak to them in parables?"
10 The disciples came up and asked, "Why do you tell stories?"
11 He answered them, "To you it is given to know the mysteries of the Kingdom of Heaven, but it is not given to them.
11 He replied, "You've been given insight into God's kingdom. You know how it works. Not everybody has this gift, this insight; it hasn't been given to them.
12 For whoever has, to him will be given, and he will have abundance, but whoever doesn't have, from him will be taken away even that which he has.
12 Whenever someone has a ready heart for this, the insights and understandings flow freely. But if there is no readiness, any trace of receptivity soon disappears.
13 Therefore I speak to them in parables, because seeing they don't see, and hearing, they don't hear, neither do they understand.
13 That's why I tell stories: to create readiness, to nudge the people toward receptive insight. In their present state they can stare till doomsday and not see it, listen till they're blue in the face and not get it.
14 In them the prophecy of Yesha`yahu is fulfilled, which says, 'By hearing you will hear, And will in no way understand; Seeing you will see, And will in no way perceive:
14 I don't want Isaiah's forecast repeated all over again: Your ears are open but you don't hear a thing. Your eyes are awake but you don't see a thing.
15 For this people's heart has grown callous, Their ears are dull of hearing, Their eyes they have closed; Or else perhaps they might perceive with their eyes, Hear with their ears, Understand with their heart, And should turn again; And I would heal them.'
15 The people are blockheads! They stick their fingers in their ears so they won't have to listen; They screw their eyes shut so they won't have to look, so they won't have to deal with me face-to-face and let me heal them.
16 "But blessed are your eyes, for they see; and your ears, for they hear.
16 "But you have God-blessed eyes - eyes that see! And God-blessed ears - ears that hear!
17 For most assuredly I tell you that many prophets and righteous men desired to see the things which you see, and didn't see them; and to hear the things which you hear, and didn't hear them.
17 A lot of people, prophets and humble believers among them, would have given anything to see what you are seeing, to hear what you are hearing, but never had the chance.
18 "Hear, then, the parable of the farmer.
18 "Study this story of the farmer planting seed.
19 When anyone hears the word of the kingdom, and doesn't understand it, the evil one comes, and snatches away that which has been sown in his heart. This is what was sown by the roadside.
19 When anyone hears news of the kingdom and doesn't take it in, it just remains on the surface, and so the Evil One comes along and plucks it right out of that person's heart. This is the seed the farmer scatters on the road.
20 What was sown on the rocky places, this is he who hears the word, and immediately with joy receives it;
20 "The seed cast in the gravel - this is the person who hears and instantly responds with enthusiasm.
21 yet he has no root in himself, but endures for a while. When oppression or persecution arises because of the word, immediately he stumbles.
21 But there is no soil of character, and so when the emotions wear off and some difficulty arrives, there is nothing to show for it.
22 What was sown among the thorns, this is he who hears the word, but the cares of this world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and he becomes unfruitful.
22 "The seed cast in the weeds is the person who hears the kingdom news, but weeds of worry and illusions about getting more and wanting everything under the sun strangle what was heard, and nothing comes of it.
23 What was sown on the good ground, this is he who hears the word, and understands it, who most assuredly bears fruit, and brings forth, some one hundred times, some sixty, some thirty."
23 "The seed cast on good earth is the person who hears and takes in the News, and then produces a harvest beyond his wildest dreams."
24 He set another parable before them, saying, "The Kingdom of Heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field,
24 He told another story. "God's kingdom is like a farmer who planted good seed in his field.
25 but while people slept, his enemy came and sowed darnel also among the wheat, and went away.
25 That night, while his hired men were asleep, his enemy sowed thistles all through the wheat and slipped away before dawn.
26 But when the blade sprang up and brought forth fruit, then the darnel appeared also.
26 When the first green shoots appeared and the grain began to form, the thistles showed up, too.
27 The servants of the householder came and said to him, 'Sir, didn't you sow good seed in your field? Where did this darnel come from?'
27 "The farmhands came to the farmer and said, 'Master, that was clean seed you planted, wasn't it? Where did these thistles come from?'
28 "He said to them, 'An enemy has done this.' "The servants asked him, 'Do you want us to go and gather them up?'
28 "He answered, 'Some enemy did this.' "The farmhands asked, 'Should we weed out the thistles?'
29 "But he said, 'No, lest perhaps while you gather up the darnel, you root up the wheat with them.
29 "He said, 'No, if you weed the thistles, you'll pull up the wheat, too.
30 Let both grow together until the harvest, and in the harvest time I will tell the reapers, "First, gather up the darnel, and bind them in bundles to burn them; but gather the wheat into my barn."'"
30 Let them grow together until harvest time. Then I'll instruct the harvesters to pull up the thistles and tie them in bundles for the fire, then gather the wheat and put it in the barn.'"
31 He set another parable before them, saying, "The Kingdom of Heaven is like a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and sowed in his field;
31 Another story. "God's kingdom is like a pine nut that a farmer plants.
32 which indeed is smaller than all seeds. But when it is grown, it is greater than the herbs, and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and lodge in its branches."
32 It is quite small as seeds go, but in the course of years it grows into a huge pine tree, and eagles build nests in it."
33 He spoke another parable to them. "The Kingdom of Heaven is like yeast, which a woman took, and hid in three measures of meal, until it was all leavened."
33 Another story. "God's kingdom is like yeast that a woman works into the dough for dozens of loaves of barley bread - and waits while the dough rises."
34 Yeshua spoke all these things in parables to the multitudes; and without a parable, he didn't speak to them,
34 All Jesus did that day was tell stories - a long storytelling afternoon.
35 that it might be fulfilled which was spoken through the prophet, saying, "I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things hidden from the foundation of the world."
35 His storytelling fulfilled the prophecy: I will open my mouth and tell stories; I will bring out into the open things hidden since the world's first day.
36 Then Yeshua sent the multitudes away, and went into the house. His talmidim came to him, saying, "Explain to us the parable of the darnel of the field."
36 Jesus dismissed the congregation and went into the house. His disciples came in and said, "Explain to us that story of the thistles in the field."
37 He answered them, "He who sows the good seed is the Son of Man,
37 So he explained. "The farmer who sows the pure seed is the Son of Man.
38 the field is the world; and the good seed, these are the sons of the kingdom; and the darnel are the sons of the evil one.
38 The field is the world, the pure seeds are subjects of the kingdom, the thistles are subjects of the Devil,
39 The enemy who sowed them is the devil. The harvest is the end of the age, and the reapers are angels.
39 and the enemy who sows them is the Devil. The harvest is the end of the age, the curtain of history. The harvest hands are angels.
40 As therefore the darnel is gathered up and burned with fire; so will it be in the end of this age.
40 "The picture of thistles pulled up and burned is a scene from the final act.
41 The Son of Man will send forth his angels, and they will gather out of his kingdom all things that cause stumbling, and those who do iniquity,
41 The Son of Man will send his angels, weed out the thistles from his kingdom,
42 and will cast them into the furnace of fire. There will be weeping and the gnashing of teeth.
42 pitch them in the trash, and be done with them. They are going to complain to high heaven, but nobody is going to listen.
43 Then the righteous will shine forth like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears to hear, let him hear.
43 At the same time, ripe, holy lives will mature and adorn the kingdom of their Father. "Are you listening to this? Really listening?
44 "The Kingdom of Heaven is like a treasure hidden in the field, which a man found, and hid. In his joy, he goes and sells all that he has, and buys that field.
44 "God's kingdom is like a treasure hidden in a field for years and then accidently found by a trespasser. The finder is ecstatic - what a find! - and proceeds to sell everything he owns to raise money and buy that field.
45 "Again, the Kingdom of Heaven is like a man who is a merchant seeking fine pearls,
45 "Or, God's kingdom is like a jewel merchant on the hunt for excellent pearls.
46 who having found one pearl of great price, he went and sold all that he had, and bought it.
46 Finding one that is flawless, he immediately sells everything and buys it.
47 "Again, the Kingdom of Heaven is like a dragnet, that was cast into the sea, and gathered some fish of every kind,
47 "Or, God's kingdom is like a fishnet cast into the sea, catching all kinds of fish.
48 which, when it was filled, they drew up on the beach. They sat down, and gathered the good into containers, but the bad they threw away.
48 When it is full, it is hauled onto the beach. The good fish are picked out and put in a tub; those unfit to eat are thrown away.
49 So will it be in the end of the world. The angels will come forth, and separate the wicked from among the righteous,
49 That's how it will be when the curtain comes down on history. The angels will come and cull the bad fish
50 and will cast them into the furnace of fire. There will be the weeping and the gnashing of teeth."
50 and throw them in the garbage. There will be a lot of desperate complaining, but it won't do any good."
51 Yeshua said to them, "Have you understood all these things?" They answered him, "Yes, Lord."
51 Jesus asked, "Are you starting to get a handle on all this?" They answered, "Yes."
52 He said to them, "Therefore, every Sofer who has been made a talmid to the Kingdom of Heaven is like a man who is a householder, who brings forth out of his treasure new and old things."
52 He said, "Then you see how every student well-trained in God's kingdom is like the owner of a general store who can put his hands on anything you need, old or new, exactly when you need it."
53 It happened that when Yeshua had finished these parables, he departed from there.
53 When Jesus finished telling these stories, he left there,
54 Coming into his own country, he taught them in their synagogue, so much that they were astonished, and said, "Where did this man get this wisdom, and these mighty works?
54 returned to his hometown, and gave a lecture in the meetinghouse. He made a real hit, impressing everyone. "We had no idea he was this good!" they said. "How did he get so wise, get such ability?"
55 Isn't this the carpenter's son? Isn't his mother called Miryam, and his brothers, Ya`akov, Yosi, Shim`on, and Yehudah?
55 But in the next breath they were cutting him down: "We've known him since he was a kid; he's the carpenter's son. We know his mother, Mary. We know his brothers James and Joseph, Simon and Judas.
56 Aren't all of his sisters with us? Where, then did this man get all of these things?"
56 All his sisters live here. Who does he think he is?"
57 They were offended by him. But Yeshua said to them, "A prophet is not without honor, except in his own country, and in his own house."
57 They got their noses all out of joint.
58 He didn't do many mighty works there because of their unbelief.
58 But Jesus said, "A prophet is taken for granted in his hometown and his family." He didn't do many miracles there because of their hostile indifference.
