Matthew 19

LEB 1 And it happened that when Jesus had finished these statements, he went away from Galilee and came into the region of Judea on the other side of the Jordan. NIV 1 When Jesus had finished saying these things, he left Galilee and went into the region of Judea to the other side of the Jordan. LEB 2 And large crowds followed him, and he healed them there. NIV 2 Large crowds followed him, and he healed them there. LEB 3 And Pharisees came up to him [in order to] test him, and asked if it was permitted for a man to divorce his wife for any cause. NIV 3 Some Pharisees came to him to test him. They asked, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any and every reason?” LEB 4 And he answered [and] said, "Have you not read that the one who created [them] from the beginning made them male and female NIV 4 “Haven’t you read,” he replied, “that at the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female,’ LEB 5 and said, 'On account of this a man will leave his father and his mother and will be joined to his wife, and the two will become one flesh'? NIV 5 and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh’? LEB 6 So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, man must not separate." NIV 6 So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.” LEB 7 They said to him, "Why then did Moses command [us] to give a document--a certificate of divorce--and to divorce her?" NIV 7 “Why then,” they asked, “did Moses command that a man give his wife a certificate of divorce and send her away?” LEB 8 He said to them, "Moses, with reference to your hardness of heart, permitted you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not like this. NIV 8 Jesus replied, “Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because your hearts were hard. But it was not this way from the beginning. LEB 9 Now I say to you that whoever divorces his wife, except on the basis of sexual immorality, and marries another commits adultery, and whoever marries her who is divorced commits adultery." NIV 9 I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery.” LEB 10 The disciples said to him, "If this is the case of a man with his wife, it would be better not to marry!" NIV 10 The disciples said to him, “If this is the situation between a husband and wife, it is better not to marry.” LEB 11 But he said to them, "Not everyone can accept this saying but [those] to whom it has been given. NIV 11 Jesus replied, “Not everyone can accept this word, but only those to whom it has been given. LEB 12 For there are eunuchs who were born as such from [their] mother's womb, and there are eunuchs who were made eunuchs by people, and there are eunuchs who have made themselves [eunuchs] for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. The one who is able to accept [this], let him accept [it]." NIV 12 For there are eunuchs who were born that way, and there are eunuchs who have been made eunuchs by others—and there are those who choose to live like eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. The one who can accept this should accept it.” LEB 13 Then children were brought to him so that he could lay his hands on them and pray, but the disciples rebuked them. NIV 13 Then people brought little children to Jesus for him to place his hands on them and pray for them. But the disciples rebuked them. LEB 14 But Jesus said, "Allow the children, and do not forbid them to come to me, {for to such belongs} the kingdom of heaven." NIV 14 Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” LEB 15 And he laid his hands on them [and] traveled on from there. NIV 15 When he had placed his hands on them, he went on from there. LEB 16 And behold, someone came up to him [and] said, "Teacher, what good [thing] must I do so that I will have eternal life?" NIV 16 Just then a man came up to Jesus and asked, “Teacher, what good thing must I do to get eternal life?” LEB 17 And he said to him, "Why are you asking me about [what is] good? There is one [who is] good. But if you want to enter into life, keep the commandments!" NIV 17 “Why do you ask me about what is good?” Jesus replied. “There is only One who is good. If you want to enter life, keep the commandments.” LEB 18 He said to him, "Which [ones]?" And Jesus said, "Do not commit murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not give false testimony, NIV 18 “Which ones?” he inquired. Jesus replied, “ ‘You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, LEB 19 honor your father and your mother, and love your neighbor as yourself." NIV 19 honor your father and mother,’and ‘love your neighbor as yourself.’” LEB 20 The young man said to him, "All these I have observed. What do I still lack?" NIV 20 “All these I have kept,” the young man said. “What do I still lack?” LEB 21 Jesus said to him, "If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give [the proceeds] to the poor--and you will have treasure in heaven--and come, follow me." NIV 21 Jesus answered, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” LEB 22 But [when] the young man heard the statement, he went away sorrowful, because he was one who had many possessions. NIV 22 When the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth. LEB 23 And Jesus said to his disciples, "Truly I say to you that with difficulty a rich person will enter into the kingdom of heaven! NIV 23 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Truly I tell you, it is hard for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of heaven. LEB 24 And again I say to you, it is easier [for] a camel to go through the eye of a needle than a rich person into the kingdom of God." NIV 24 Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.” LEB 25 So [when] the disciples heard [this], they were extremely amazed, saying, "Then who can be saved?" NIV 25 When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished and asked, “Who then can be saved?” LEB 26 But Jesus looked at [them] [and] said to them, "With human beings this is impossible, but with God all [things] [are] possible." NIV 26 Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” LEB 27 Then Peter answered [and] said to him, "Behold, we have left everything and followed you. What then will there be for us?" NIV 27 Peter answered him, “We have left everything to follow you! What then will there be for us?” LEB 28 And Jesus said to them, "Truly I say to you that in the renewal [of the world], when the Son of Man sits on his glorious throne, you who have followed me--you also will sit on twelve thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel. NIV 28 Jesus said to them, “Truly I tell you, at the renewal of all things, when the Son of Man sits on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. LEB 29 And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or fields on account of my name will receive a hundred times as much, and will inherit eternal life. NIV 29 And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wifeor children or fields for my sake will receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life. LEB 30 But many [who are] first will be last, and the last first. NIV 30 But many who are first will be last, and many who are last will be first.
