New Living Translation NLT
Common English Bible CEB
1 Mobilize! Marshal your troops! The enemy is laying siege to Jerusalem. They will strike Israel’s leader in the face with a rod.
1
Now muster your troops, Daughter Troop! They have laid siege against us; with a rod they will strike the cheek of the judge of Israel.
2 But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, are only a small village among all the people of Judah. Yet a ruler of Israel, whose origins are in the distant past, will come from you on my behalf.
2
As for you, Bethlehem of Ephrathah, though you are the least significant of Judah's forces, one who is to be a ruler in Israel on my behalf will come out from you. His origin is from remote times, from ancient days.
3 The people of Israel will be abandoned to their enemies until the woman in labor gives birth. Then at last his fellow countrymen will return from exile to their own land.
3
Therefore, he will give them up until the time when she who is in labor gives birth. The rest of his kin will return to the people of Israel.
4 And he will stand to lead his flock with the LORD ’s strength, in the majesty of the name of the LORD his God. Then his people will live there undisturbed, for he will be highly honored around the world.
4
He will stand and shepherd his flock in the strength of the LORD, in the majesty of the name of the LORD his God. They will dwell secure, because he will surely become great throughout the earth;
5 And he will be the source of peace. When the Assyrians invade our land and break through our defenses, we will appoint seven rulers to watch over us, eight princes to lead us.
5
he will become one of peace. When Assyria invades our land and treads down our fortresses, then we will raise up against him seven shepherds and eight human princes.
6 They will rule Assyria with drawn swords and enter the gates of the land of Nimrod. He will rescue us from the Assyrians when they pour over the borders to invade our land.
6
They will shepherd the land of Assyria with the sword, the land of Nimrod with the drawn sword. He will rescue us from Assyria when he invades our land and treads within our territory.
7 Then the remnant left in Israel will take their place among the nations. They will be like dew sent by the LORD or like rain falling on the grass, which no one can hold back and no one can restrain.
7
Then the few remaining in Jacob will be amid many peoples like dew from the LORD, like spring showers upon the grass, which does not hope for humans or wait for human ones.
8 The remnant left in Israel will take their place among the nations. They will be like a lion among the animals of the forest, like a strong young lion among flocks of sheep and goats, pouncing and tearing as they go with no rescuer in sight.
8
Then the few remaining in Jacob will be among the nations, amid many peoples, like a lion among the creatures of the forest, like a young lion among flocks of sheep, which when it passes by, tramples and tears to pieces with no one to deliver.
9 The people of Israel will stand up to their foes, and all their enemies will be wiped out.
9
Your hand will be lifted over your foes; all your enemies will be cut off.
10 “In that day,” says the LORD, “I will slaughter your horses and destroy your chariots.
10
On that day—says the LORD— I will cut down your horses in your midst; I will destroy your chariots!
11 I will tear down your walls and demolish your defenses.
11
I will cut down the cities of your land; I will tear down your defenses!
12 I will put an end to all witchcraft, and there will be no more fortune-tellers.
12
I will demolish the sorceries you perform; you will have no more diviners!
13 I will destroy all your idols and sacred pillars, so you will never again worship the work of your own hands.
13
I will cut down your images and your sacred pillars in your midst. You will no longer bow down to the works of your hands!
14 I will abolish your idol shrines with their Asherah poles and destroy your pagan cities.
14
I will tear down your sacred poles in your midst; I will destroy your cities!
15 I will pour out my vengeance on all the nations that refuse to obey me.”
15
I will exact vengeance in anger and in wrath on the nations that don't obey!
