Numbers 35

CJB

BBE

1 In the plains of Mo'av by the Yarden, across from Yericho, ADONAI said to Moshe,
1 And the Lord said to Moses in the lowlands of Moab by Jordan at Jericho,
2 "Order the people of Isra'el to give to the L'vi'im cities to live in from the heritage they will possess, and you are also to give the L'vi'im some of the open land surrounding the cities.
2 Give orders to the children of Israel to give to the Levites, from the heritage which is theirs, towns for themselves, with land on the outskirts of the towns.
3 They are to have the cities to live in, while their open land will be for their livestock, for growing crops and for all their animals.
3 These towns are to be their living-places, with land round them for their cattle and their food and all their beasts,
4 The open land around the cities you give to the L'vi'im is to commence at a line drawn around the city wall 1,500 feet outside it and is to extend outward from there.
4 Stretching from the wall of the towns a distance of a thousand cubits all round.
5 Measure 3,000 feet outward from the city wall to the east, south, west and north, with the city in the center. The space between the 1,500-foot line and the 3,000-foot line will be their open land around the cities.
5 The measure of this space of land is to be two thousand cubits outside the town on the east, and two thousand cubits on the south and on the west and on the north, the town being in the middle. This space will be the outskirts of their towns.
6 The cities you give to the L'vi'im are to be the six cities of refuge to which you permit the person who kills someone to flee to; plus an additional forty-two cities.
6 And the towns which you give the Levites are to be the six safe places to which the taker of life may go in flight; and in addition you are to give them forty-two towns.
7 Thus you will give the L'vi'im forty-eight cities, with their surrounding open land.
7 Forty-eight towns are to be given to the Levites, all with land round them.
8 As to the cities you will give from those the people of Isra'el possess, from the many you will take many, and from the few you will take few - each tribe will contribute from its cities to the L'vi'im in accordance with the size of its inheritance."
8 And these towns are to be given out of the heritage of the children of Israel, taking the greater number from those who have much, and a smaller number from those who have little: everyone, in the measure of his heritage, is to give of his property to the Levites.
9 ADONAI said to Moshe,
9 And the Lord said to Moses,
10 "Tell the people of Isra'el, 'When you cross the Yarden into the land of Kena'an,
10 Say to the children of Israel, when you have gone over Jordan into the land of Canaan;
11 you are to designate for yourselves cities that will be cities of refuge for you, to which anyone who kills someone by mistake can flee.
11 Then let certain towns be marked out as safe places to which anyone who takes the life of another in error may go in flight.
12 These cities are to be a refuge for you from the dead person's next-of-kin, who might otherwise avenge his kinsman's death by slaying the killer prior to his standing trial before the community.
12 In these towns you may be safe from him who has the right of punishment; so that death may not overtake the taker of life till he has been judged by the meeting of the people.
13 In regard to the cities you are to give, there are to be six cities of refuge for you.
13 Six of the towns which you give will be such safe places;
14 You are to give three cities east of the Yarden and three cities in the land of Kena'an; they will be cities of refuge.
14 Three on the other side of Jordan and three in the land of Canaan, to be safe places for flight.
15 These six cities will serve as refuge for the people of Isra'el, as well as for the foreigner and resident alien with them; so that anyone who kills someone by mistake may flee there.
15 For the children of Israel and for the man from another country who is living among them, these six towns are to be safe places, where anyone causing the death of another through error may go in flight.
16 "'However, if he hits him with an iron implement and thus causes his death, he is a murderer; the murderer must be put to death.
16 But if a man gives another man a blow with an iron instrument, causing his death, he is a taker of life and is certainly to be put to death.
17 Or if he hits him with a stone in his hand big enough to kill someone, and he dies, he is a murderer; the murderer must be put to death.
17 Or if he gives him a blow with a stone in his hand, causing his death, he is a taker of life and is certainly to be put to death.
18 Or if he hits him with a wood utensil in his hand capable of killing someone, and he dies, he is a murderer; the murderer must be put to death.
18 Or if he gave him blows with a wood instrument in his hands, causing his death, he is a taker of life and is certainly to be put to death.
19 The next-of-kin avenger is to put the murderer to death himself - upon meeting him, he is to put him to death.
19 He whose right it is to give punishment for blood, may himself put to death the taker of life when he comes face to face with him.
20 Likewise, if he shoves him out of hatred; or intentionally throws something at him, causing his death;
20 If in his hate he put a sword through him, or waiting secretly for him sent a spear or stone at him, causing his death;
21 or out of hostility strikes him with his hand, so that he dies; then the one who struck him must be put to death; he is a murderer; and the next-of-kin avenger is to put the murderer to death upon meeting him.
21 Or in hate gave him blows with his hand, causing death; he who gave the death-blow is to be put to death; he is a taker of life: he whose right it is to give punishment for blood may put to death the taker of life when he comes face to face with him.
22 "'But suppose he shoves him suddenly, but without hostility; or he throws something at him unintentionally;
22 But if a man has given a wound to another suddenly and not in hate, or without design has sent something against him,
23 or, without seeing him, being his enemy or seeking to harm him, he throws a stone big enough to cause death; and the person dies.
23 Or has given him a blow with a stone, without seeing him, so causing his death, though he had nothing against him and no desire to do him evil:
24 Then the community is to judge between the one who struck him and the next-of-kin avenger in accordance with these rules;
24 Then let the meeting of the people be judge between the man responsible for the death and him who has the right of punishment for blood, acting by these rules:
25 and the community is to save the killer from the next-of-kin avenger. The community is to return him to the city of refuge to which he fled, and he is to live there until the cohen hagadol, who was anointed with the holy oil, dies.
25 And let the people keep the man responsible for the death safe from the hands of him who has the right of punishment for blood, and send him back to his safe town where he had gone in flight: there let him be till the death of the high priest who was marked with the holy oil.
26 But if the killer ever goes beyond the limits of the city of refuge he fled to,
26 But if ever he goes outside the walls of the safe town where he had gone in flight,
27 and the next-of-kin avenger finds him outside the limits of his city of refuge, and the avenger kills the killer, he will not be guilty of the man's blood;
27 And the giver of punishment, meeting him outside the walls of the town, puts him to death, he will not be responsible for his blood:
28 because he must stay in his city of refuge until the death of the cohen hagadol. But after the death of the cohen hagadol the killer may return to the land he owns.
28 Because he had been ordered to keep inside the safe town till the death of the high priest: but after the death of the high priest the taker of life may come back to the place of his heritage.
29 These things shall constitute your standard for judgment through all your generations, wherever you live.
29 These rules are to be your guide in judging through all your generations wherever you may be living.
30 "'If anyone kills someone, the murderer is to be put to death upon the testimony of witnesses; but the testimony of only one witness will not suffice to cause a person to be put to death.
30 Anyone causing the death of another is himself to be put to death on the word of witnesses: but the word of one witness is not enough.
31 Also, you are not to accept a ransom in lieu of the life of a murderer condemned to death; rather, he must be put to death.
31 Further, no price may be given for the life of one who has taken life and whose right reward is death: he is certainly to be put to death.
32 Likewise, you are not to accept for someone who has fled to his city of refuge a ransom that would allow him to return to his land before the death of the cohen.
32 And no price may be offered for one who has gone in flight to a safe town, for the purpose of letting him come back to his place before the death of the high priest.
33 In this way you will not defile the land in which you are living. For blood defiles the land, and in this land no atonement can be made for the blood shed in it except the blood of him who shed it.
33 So do not make the land where you are living unholy: for blood makes the land unholy: and there is no way of making the land free from the blood which has come on it, but only by the death of him who was the cause of it.
34 No, you are not to defile the land in which you live and in which I live; for I, ADONAI, live among the people of Isra'el.'"
34 Do not make unclean the land where you are living and in which is my House: for I the Lord am present among the children of Israel.
