Numbers 35

WEB 1 Yahweh spoke to Moses in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho, saying, NIV 1 On the plains of Moab by the Jordan across from Jericho, the LORD said to Moses, WEB 2 Command the children of Israel that they give to the Levites of the inheritance of their possession cities to dwell in; and suburbs for the cities round about them shall you give to the Levites. NIV 2 “Command the Israelites to give the Levites towns to live in from the inheritance the Israelites will possess. And give them pasturelands around the towns. WEB 3 The cities shall they have to dwell in; and their suburbs shall be for their cattle, and for their substance, and for all their animals. NIV 3 Then they will have towns to live in and pasturelands for the cattle they own and all their other animals. WEB 4 The suburbs of the cities, which you shall give to the Levites, shall be from the wall of the city and outward one thousand cubits round about. NIV 4 “The pasturelands around the towns that you give the Levites will extend a thousand cubits from the town wall. WEB 5 You shall measure outside of the city for the east side two thousand cubits, and for the south side two thousand cubits, and for the west side two thousand cubits, and for the north side two thousand cubits, the city being in the midst. This shall be to them the suburbs of the cities. NIV 5 Outside the town, measure two thousand cubits on the east side, two thousand on the south side, two thousand on the west and two thousand on the north, with the town in the center. They will have this area as pastureland for the towns. WEB 6 The cities which you shall give to the Levites, they shall be the six cities of refuge, which you shall give for the manslayer to flee to: and besides them you shall give forty-two cities. NIV 6 “Six of the towns you give the Levites will be cities of refuge, to which a person who has killed someone may flee. In addition, give them forty-two other towns. WEB 7 All the cities which you shall give to the Levites shall be forty-eight cities; them [shall you give] with their suburbs. NIV 7 In all you must give the Levites forty-eight towns, together with their pasturelands. WEB 8 Concerning the cities which you shall give of the possession of the children of Israel, from the many you shall take many; and from the few you shall take few: everyone according to his inheritance which he inherits shall give of his cities to the Levites. NIV 8 The towns you give the Levites from the land the Israelites possess are to be given in proportion to the inheritance of each tribe: Take many towns from a tribe that has many, but few from one that has few.” WEB 9 Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, NIV 9 Then the LORD said to Moses: WEB 10 Speak to the children of Israel, and tell them, When you pass over the Jordan into the land of Canaan, NIV 10 “Speak to the Israelites and say to them: ‘When you cross the Jordan into Canaan, WEB 11 then you shall appoint you cities to be cities of refuge for you, that the manslayer who kills any person unwittingly may flee there. NIV 11 select some towns to be your cities of refuge, to which a person who has killed someone accidentally may flee. WEB 12 The cities shall be to you for refuge from the avenger, that the manslayer not die, until he stands before the congregation for judgment. NIV 12 They will be places of refuge from the avenger, so that anyone accused of murder may not die before they stand trial before the assembly. WEB 13 The cities which you shall give shall be for you six cities of refuge. NIV 13 These six towns you give will be your cities of refuge. WEB 14 You shall give three cities beyond the Jordan, and three cities shall you give in the land of Canaan; they shall be cities of refuge. NIV 14 Give three on this side of the Jordan and three in Canaan as cities of refuge. WEB 15 For the children of Israel, and for the stranger and for the sojourner among them, shall these six cities be for refuge; that everyone who kills any person unwittingly may flee there. NIV 15 These six towns will be a place of refuge for Israelites and for foreigners residing among them, so that anyone who has killed another accidentally can flee there. WEB 16 But if he struck him with an instrument of iron, so that he died, he is a murderer: the murderer shall surely be put to death. NIV 16 “ ‘If anyone strikes someone a fatal blow with an iron object, that person is a murderer; the murderer is to be put to death. WEB 17 If he struck him with a stone in the hand, whereby a man may die, and he died, he is a murderer: the murderer shall surely be put to death. NIV 17 Or if anyone is holding a stone and strikes someone a fatal blow with it, that person is a murderer; the murderer is to be put to death. WEB 18 Or if he struck him with a weapon of wood in the hand, whereby a man may die, and he died, he is a murderer: the murderer shall surely be put to death. NIV 18 Or if anyone is holding a wooden object and strikes someone a fatal blow with it, that person is a murderer; the murderer is to be put to death. WEB 19 The avenger of blood shall himself put the murderer to death: when he meets him, he shall put him to death. NIV 19 The avenger of blood shall put the murderer to death; when the avenger comes upon the murderer, the avenger shall put the murderer to death. WEB 20 If he thrust him of hatred, or hurled at him, lying in wait, so that he died, NIV 20 If anyone with malice aforethought shoves another or throws something at them intentionally so that they die WEB 21 or in enmity struck him with his hand, so that he died; he who struck him shall surely be put to death; he is a murderer: the avenger of blood shall put the murderer to death, when he meets him. NIV 21 or if out of enmity one person hits another with their fist so that the other dies, that person is to be put to death; that person is a murderer. The avenger of blood shall put the murderer to death when they meet. WEB 22 But if he thrust him suddenly without enmity, or hurled on him anything without lying in wait, NIV 22 “ ‘But if without enmity someone suddenly pushes another or throws something at them unintentionally WEB 23 or with any stone, whereby a man may die, not seeing him, and cast it on him, so that he died, and he was not his enemy, neither sought his harm; NIV 23 or, without seeing them, drops on them a stone heavy enough to kill them, and they die, then since that other person was not an enemy and no harm was intended, WEB 24 then the congregation shall judge between the striker and the avenger of blood according to these ordinances; NIV 24 the assembly must judge between the accused and the avenger of blood according to these regulations. WEB 25 and the congregation shall deliver the manslayer out of the hand of the avenger of blood, and the congregation shall restore him to his city of refuge, where he was fled: and he shall dwell therein until the death of the high priest, who was anointed with the holy oil. NIV 25 The assembly must protect the one accused of murder from the avenger of blood and send the accused back to the city of refuge to which they fled. The accused must stay there until the death of the high priest, who was anointed with the holy oil. WEB 26 But if the manslayer shall at any time go beyond the border of his city of refuge, where he flees, NIV 26 “ ‘But if the accused ever goes outside the limits of the city of refuge to which they fled WEB 27 and the avenger of blood find him outside of the border of his city of refuge, and the avenger of blood kill the manslayer; he shall not be guilty of blood, NIV 27 and the avenger of blood finds them outside the city, the avenger of blood may kill the accused without being guilty of murder. WEB 28 because he should have remained in his city of refuge until the death of the high priest: but after the death of the high priest the manslayer shall return into the land of his possession. NIV 28 The accused must stay in the city of refuge until the death of the high priest; only after the death of the high priest may they return to their own property. WEB 29 These things shall be for a statute [and] ordinance to you throughout your generations in all your dwellings. NIV 29 “ ‘This is to have the force of law for you throughout the generations to come, wherever you live. WEB 30 Whoever kills any person, the murderer shall be slain at the mouth of witnesses: but one witness shall not testify against any person that he die. NIV 30 “ ‘Anyone who kills a person is to be put to death as a murderer only on the testimony of witnesses. But no one is to be put to death on the testimony of only one witness. WEB 31 Moreover you shall take no ransom for the life of a murderer who is guilty of death; but he shall surely be put to death. NIV 31 “ ‘Do not accept a ransom for the life of a murderer, who deserves to die. They are to be put to death. WEB 32 You shall take no ransom for him who is fled to his city of refuge, that he may come again to dwell in the land, until the death of the priest. NIV 32 “ ‘Do not accept a ransom for anyone who has fled to a city of refuge and so allow them to go back and live on their own land before the death of the high priest. WEB 33 So you shall not pollute the land in which you are: for blood, it pollutes the land; and no expiation can be made for the land for the blood that is shed therein, but by the blood of him who shed it. NIV 33 “ ‘Do not pollute the land where you are. Bloodshed pollutes the land, and atonement cannot be made for the land on which blood has been shed, except by the blood of the one who shed it. WEB 34 You shall not defile the land which you inhabit, in the midst of which I dwell: for I, Yahweh, dwell in the midst of the children of Israel. NIV 34 Do not defile the land where you live and where I dwell, for I, the LORD, dwell among the Israelites.’ ”
