Philippians 2

TMB

GW

1 If there be therefore any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any tenderness and mercies,
1 So then, as Christians, do you have any encouragement? Do you have any comfort from love? Do you have any spiritual relationships? Do you have any sympathy and compassion?
2 fulfill ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, being of one accord and of one mind.
2 Then fill me with joy by having the same attitude and the same love, living in harmony, and keeping one purpose in mind.
3 Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem the other better than himself.
3 Don't act out of selfish ambition or be conceited. Instead, humbly think of others as being better than yourselves.
4 Look not every man to his own things, but every man also to the things of others.
4 Don't be concerned only about your own interests, but also be concerned about the interests of others.
5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus,
5 Have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had.
6 who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God,
6 Although he was in the form of God and equal with God, he did not take advantage of this equality.
7 but made Himself of no reputation, and took upon Him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men.
7 Instead, he emptied himself by taking on the form of a servant, by becoming like other humans, by having a human appearance.
8 And being found in the fashion of a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient unto death--even the death of the cross.
8 He humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, death on a cross.
9 Therefore God also hath highly exalted Him, and given Him a name which is above every name,
9 This is why God has given him an exceptional honor-- the name honored above all other names--
10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in Heaven and things on earth and things under the earth,
10 so that at the name of Jesus everyone in heaven, on earth, and in the world below will kneel
11 and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
11 and confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father.
12 Therefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.
12 My dear friends, you have always obeyed, not only when I was with you but even more now that I'm absent. In the same way continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling.
13 For it is God who worketh in you, both to will and to do of His good pleasure.
13 It is God who produces in you the desires and actions that please him.
14 Do all things without murmuring and disputing,
14 Do everything without complaining or arguing.
15 that ye may be blameless and unoffending, the sons of God, without rebuke in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world,
15 Then you will be blameless and innocent. You will be God's children without any faults among people who are crooked and corrupt. You will shine like stars among them in the world
16 holding forth the Word of Life, that I may rejoice in the Day of Christ that I have not run in vain, neither labored in vain.
16 as you hold firmly to the word of life. Then I can brag on the day of Christ that my effort was not wasted and that my work produced results.
17 Yea, and if I be offered upon the sacrifice and service of your faith, I am joyful and rejoice with you all.
17 My life is being poured out as a part of the sacrifice and service [I offer to God] for your faith. Yet, I am filled with joy, and I share that joy with all of you.
18 For the same cause also be ye joyful, and rejoice with me.
18 For this same reason you also should be filled with joy and share that joy with me.
19 But I trust in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy shortly unto you, that I also may be comforted when I know of your state;
19 I hope that the Lord Jesus will allow me to send Timothy to you soon so that I can receive some encouraging news about you.
20 for I have no man likeminded, who will naturally care for your state.
20 I don't have anyone else like Timothy. He takes a genuine interest in your welfare.
21 For all seek their own, not the things which are Jesus Christ's.
21 Everyone else looks after his own interests, not after those of Jesus Christ.
22 But ye know the proof of him, how as a son with a father he hath served with me in the Gospel.
22 But you know what kind of person Timothy proved to be. Like a father and son we worked hard together to spread the Good News.
23 Him therefore I hope to send presently, as soon as I shall see how it will go with me.
23 I hope to send him as soon as I see how things are going to turn out for me.
24 But I trust in the Lord that I also myself shall come shortly.
24 But the Lord gives me confidence that I will come [to visit you] soon.
25 Yet I have thought it necessary to send to you Epaphroditus, my brother and companion in labor and fellow soldier, but your messenger and he that ministered to my wants.
25 I feel that I must send Epaphroditus--my brother, coworker, and fellow soldier--back to you. You sent him as your personal representative to help me in my need.
26 For he longed after you all and was full of heaviness, because ye had heard that he had been sick.
26 He has been longing to see all of you and is troubled because you heard that he was sick.
27 For indeed he was sick nigh unto death, but God had mercy on him, and not on him only, but on me also, lest I should have sorrow upon sorrow.
27 Indeed, he was so sick that he almost died. But God had mercy not only on him but also on me and kept me from having one sorrow on top of another.
28 I sent him therefore the more carefully, that when ye see him again ye may rejoice, and I may be the less sorrowful.
28 So I'm especially eager to send him to you. In this way you will have the joy of seeing him again and I will feel relieved.
29 Receive him therefore in the Lord with all gladness, and hold such in high honor,
29 Give him a joyful Christian welcome. Make sure you honor people like Epaphroditus highly.
30 because for the work of Christ he was nigh unto death, not having regard for his own life, to supply what was lacking in your service toward me.
30 He risked his life and almost died for the work of Christ in order to make up for the help you couldn't give me.
