1 Therefore, my brethren dearly beloved and longed for, my joy and crown, so stand fast in the Lord, <em>my</em> dearly beloved.
1 Therefore, my brothers and sisters, you whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, stand firm in the Lord in this way, dear friends!
2 I beseech Euodias and beseech Syntyche, that they be of the same mind in the Lord.
2 I plead with Euodia and I plead with Syntyche to be of the same mind in the Lord.
3 And I intreat thee also, true yokefellow, help those women who laboured with me in the gospel, with Clement also and <em>with</em> my other fellowlabourers, whose names <em>are</em> in the book of life.
3 Yes, and I ask you, my true companion, help these women since they have contended at my side in the cause of the gospel, along with Clement and the rest of my co-workers, whose names are in the book of life.
4 Rejoice in the Lord always, <em>and</em> again I say, Rejoice.
4 Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!
5 Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord <em>is</em> near.
5 Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near.
6 Be anxious for nothing, but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known unto God.
6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.
7 And the peace of God, which passes all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
8 Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things <em>are</em> honest, whatever things <em>are</em> just, whatever things <em>are</em> pure, whatever things <em>are</em> lovely, whatever things <em>are</em> of good report, if <em>there is</em> any virtue and if <em>there is</em> any praise, exercise yourselves in these things.
8 Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.
9 Those things, which ye have both learned and received and heard and seen in me, do, and the God of peace shall be with you.
9 Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.
10 But I rejoiced in the Lord greatly, that now at the last your care of me has flourished again, in which ye were also concerned, but ye lacked opportunity.
10 I rejoiced greatly in the Lord that at last you renewed your concern for me. Indeed, you were concerned, but you had no opportunity to show it.
11 Not that I speak in respect of want, for I have learned, in whatever state I am, to be content.
11 I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances.
12 I know both how to be humbled, and I know how to have an abundance; in everything and by all things I am instructed, both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need.
12 I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want.
13 I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
13 I can do all this through him who gives me strength.
14 Notwithstanding ye have done well, that ye did communicate with my tribulation.
14 Yet it was good of you to share in my troubles.
15 Now ye Philippians know also that in the beginning of the gospel when I departed from Macedonia, no <em>congregation</em> {Gr. ekklesia – called out ones} communicated with me as concerning giving and receiving, but ye only.
15 Moreover, as you Philippians know, in the early days of your acquaintance with the gospel, when I set out from Macedonia, not one church shared with me in the matter of giving and receiving, except you only;
16 For even in Thessalonica ye sent once and again unto my necessity.
16 for even when I was in Thessalonica, you sent me aid more than once when I was in need.
17 Not because I desire a gift, but I desire fruit that may abound to your account.
17 Not that I desire your gifts; what I desire is that more be credited to your account.
18 But I have all and abound; I am full, having received of Epaphroditus the things <em>which were sent</em> from you, an odour of a sweet smell, a sacrifice acceptable, wellpleasing to God.
18 I have received full payment and have more than enough. I am amply supplied, now that I have received from Epaphroditus the gifts you sent. They are a fragrant offering, an acceptable sacrifice, pleasing to God.
19 But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.
19 And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.
20 Now unto God and our Father <em>be</em> glory for ever and ever. Amen.
20 To our God and Father be glory for ever and ever. Amen.
21 Greet every saint in Christ Jesus. The brethren who are with me greet you.
21 Greet all God’s people in Christ Jesus. The brothers and sisters who are with me send greetings.
22 All the saints greet you, chiefly those that are of the Caesar’s household.
22 All God’s people here send you greetings, especially those who belong to Caesar’s household.
23 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ <em>be</em> with you all. Amen.
23 The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Amen.
