1 EL hijo sabio toma el consejo del padre: Mas el burlador no escucha las reprensiones.

A wise son listens to his father's discipline, but a mocker does not listen to reprimands.
2 Del fruto de su boca el hombre comerá bien: Mas el alma de los prevaricadores hallará mal.

A person eats well as a result of his speaking ability, but the appetite of treacherous people [craves] violence.
3 El que guarda su boca guarda su alma: Mas el que mucho abre sus labios tendrá calamidad.

Whoever controls his mouth protects his own life. Whoever has a big mouth comes to ruin.
4 Desea, y nada alcanza el alma del perezoso: Mas el alma de los diligentes será engordada.

A lazy person craves food and there is none, but the appetite of hard-working people is satisfied.
5 El justo aborrece la palabra de mentira: Mas el impío se hace odioso é infame.

A righteous person hates lying, but a wicked person behaves with shame and disgrace.
6 La justicia guarda al de perfecto camino: Mas la impiedad trastornará al pecador.

Righteousness protects the honest way of life, but wickedness ruins a sacrifice for sin.
7 Hay quienes se hacen ricos, y no tienen nada: Y hay quienes se hacen pobres, y tienen muchas riquezas.

One person pretends to be rich but has nothing. Another pretends to be poor but has great wealth.
8 La redención de la vida del hombre son sus riquezas: Pero el pobre no oye censuras.

A person's riches are the ransom for his life, but the poor person does not pay attention to threats.
9 La luz de los justos se alegrará: Mas apagaráse la lámpara de los impíos.

The light of righteous people beams brightly, but the lamp of wicked people will be snuffed out.
10 Ciertamente la soberbia parirá contienda: Mas con los avisados es la sabiduría.

Arrogance produces only quarreling, but those who take advice gain wisdom.
11 Disminuiránse las riquezas de vanidad: Empero multiplicará el que allega con su mano.

Wealth [gained] through injustice dwindles away, but whoever gathers little by little has plenty.
12 La esperanza que se prolonga, es tormento del corazón: Mas árbol de vida es el deseo cumplido.

Delayed hope makes one sick at heart, but a fulfilled longing is a tree of life.
13 El que menosprecia la palabra, perecerá por ello: Mas el que teme el mandamiento, será recompensado.

Whoever despises [God's] words will pay the penalty, but the one who fears [God's] commands will be rewarded.

The teachings of a wise person are a fountain of life to turn [one] away from the grasp of death.
15 El buen entendimiento conciliará gracia: Mas el camino de los prevaricadores es duro.

Good sense brings favor, but the way of treacherous people is always the same.
16 Todo hombre cuerdo obra con sabiduría: Mas el necio manifestará necedad.

Any sensible person acts with knowledge, but a fool displays stupidity.
17 El mal mensajero caerá en mal: Mas el mensajero fiel es medicina.

An undependable messenger gets into trouble, but a dependable envoy brings healing.
18 Pobreza y vergüenza tendrá el que menosprecia el consejo: Mas el que guarda la corrección, será honrado.

Poverty and shame come to a person who ignores discipline, but whoever pays attention to constructive criticism will be honored.
19 El deseo cumplido deleita el alma: Pero apartarse del mal es abominación á los necios.

A fulfilled desire is sweet to the soul, but turning from evil is disgusting to fools.
20 El que anda con los sabios, sabio será; Mas el que se allega á los necios, será quebrantado.

Whoever walks with wise people will be wise, but whoever associates with fools will suffer.
21 Mal perseguirá á los pecadores: Mas á los justos les será bien retribuído.

Disaster hunts down sinners, but righteous people are rewarded with good.
22 El bueno dejará herederos á los hijos de los hijos; Y el haber del pecador, para el justo está guardado.

Good people leave an inheritance to their grandchildren, but the wealth of sinners is stored away for a righteous person.
23 En el barbecho de los pobres hay mucho pan: Mas piérdese por falta de juicio.

When poor people are able to plow, there is much food, but a person is swept away where there is no justice.
24 El que detiene el castigo, á su hijo aborrece: Mas el que lo ama, madruga á castigarlo.

Whoever refuses to spank his son hates him, but whoever loves his son disciplines him from early on.
