A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold.
2 El rico y el pobre tienen esto en común:a ambos los ha creado el SEÑOR.

Rich and poor have this in common: The LORD is the Maker of them all.
3 El prudente ve el peligro y lo evita;el inexperto sigue adelante y sufre las consecuencias.

The prudent see danger and take refuge, but the simple keep going and pay the penalty.
4 Recompensa de la humildad y del temor del SEÑORson las riquezas, la honra y la vida.

Humility is the fear of the LORD; its wages are riches and honor and life.
5 Espinas y trampas hay en la senda de los impíos,pero el que cuida su vida se aleja de ellas.

In the paths of the wicked are snares and pitfalls, but those who would preserve their life stay far from them.
6 Instruye al niño en el camino correcto,y aun en su vejez no lo abandonará.

Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.
7 Los ricos son los amos de los pobres;los deudores son esclavos de sus acreedores.

The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is slave to the lender.
8 El que siembra maldad cosecha desgracias;el SEÑOR lo destruirá con el cetro de su ira.

Whoever sows injustice reaps calamity, and the rod they wield in fury will be broken.
9 El que es generoso será bendecido,pues comparte su comida con los pobres.

The generous will themselves be blessed, for they share their food with the poor.
10 Despide al insolente, y se irá la discordiay cesarán los pleitos y los insultos.

Drive out the mocker, and out goes strife; quarrels and insults are ended.
11 El que ama la pureza de corazón y tiene gracia al hablartendrá por amigo al rey.

One who loves a pure heart and who speaks with grace will have the king for a friend.
12 Los ojos del SEÑOR protegen el saber,pero desbaratan las palabras del traidor.

The eyes of the LORD keep watch over knowledge, but he frustrates the words of the unfaithful.
13 «¡Hay un león allá afuera! —dice el holgazán—.¡En plena calle me va a hacer pedazos!»

The sluggard says, “There’s a lion outside! I’ll be killed in the public square!”
14 La boca de la adúltera es una fosa profunda;en ella caerá quien esté bajo la ira del SEÑOR.

The mouth of an adulterous woman is a deep pit; a man who is under the LORD’s wrath falls into it.
15 La necedad es parte del corazón juvenil,pero la vara de la disciplina la corrige.

Folly is bound up in the heart of a child, but the rod of discipline will drive it far away.
16 Oprimir al pobre para enriquecerse,y hacerle regalos al rico,¡buena manera de empobrecerse!

One who oppresses the poor to increase his wealth and one who gives gifts to the rich—both come to poverty.
17 Presta atención, escucha mis palabras;aplica tu corazón a mi conocimiento.

Pay attention and turn your ear to the sayings of the wise; apply your heart to what I teach,
18 Grato es retenerlas dentro de ti,y tenerlas todas a flor de labio.

for it is pleasing when you keep them in your heart and have all of them ready on your lips.
19 A ti te las enseño en este día,para que pongas tu confianza en el SEÑOR.

So that your trust may be in the LORD, I teach you today, even you.
20 ¿Acaso no te he escrito treinta dichosque contienen sabios consejos?

Have I not written thirty sayings for you, sayings of counsel and knowledge,
21 Son para enseñarte palabras ciertas y confiables,para que sepas responder bien a quien te pregunte.

teaching you to be honest and to speak the truth, so that you bring back truthful reports to those you serve?
22 No explotes al pobre porque es pobre,ni oprimas en los tribunales a los necesitados;

Do not exploit the poor because they are poor and do not crush the needy in court,
23 porque el SEÑOR defenderá su causa,y despojará a quienes los despojen.

for the LORD will take up their case and will exact life for life.
24 No te hagas amigo de gente violenta,ni te juntes con los iracundos,

Do not make friends with a hot-tempered person, do not associate with one easily angered,
25 no sea que aprendas sus malas costumbresy tú mismo caigas en la trampa.

or you may learn their ways and get yourself ensnared.
26 No te comprometas por otrosni salgas fiador de deudas ajenas;

Do not be one who shakes hands in pledge or puts up security for debts;
27 porque si no tienes con qué pagar,te quitarán hasta la cama en que duermes.

if you lack the means to pay, your very bed will be snatched from under you.
28 No cambies de lugar los linderos antiguosque establecieron tus antepasados.

Do not move an ancient boundary stone set up by your ancestors.

Do you see someone skilled in their work? They will serve before kings; they will not serve before officials of low rank.
