1 Como nieve en el verano y como lluvia en la siega, así la honra no es apropiada para el necio.

Like snow in summer and like rain in harvest, So honor is not fitting for a fool.
2 Como el gorrión en su vagar y la golondrina en su vuelo así la maldición no viene sin causa.

Like a sparrow in its flitting, like a swallow in its flying, So a curse without cause does not alight.
3 El látigo es para el caballo, la brida para el asno, y la vara para la espalda de los necios.

A whip is for the horse, a bridle for the donkey, And a rod for the back of fools.
4 No respondas al necio de acuerdo con su necedad, para que no seas tú también como él.

Do not answer a fool according to his folly, Or you will also be like him.
5 Responde al necio según su necedad, para que no sea sabio ante sus propios ojos.

Answer a fool as his folly deserves, That he not be wise in his own eyes.
6 Se corta los pies y bebe violencia el que envía recado por mano de necio.

He cuts off his own feet and drinks violence Who sends a message by the hand of a fool.
7 Como las piernas que penden del lisiado, así es el proverbio en boca de los necios.

Like the legs which are useless to the lame, So is a proverb in the mouth of fools.
8 Como el que ata la piedra a la honda así es el que da honor al necio.

Like one who binds a stone in a sling, So is he who gives honor to a fool.
9 Como espino que se clava en la mano de un borracho, tal es el proverbio en boca de los necios.

Like a thorn which falls into the hand of a drunkard, So is a proverb in the mouth of fools.
10 Como arquero que a todos hiere, así es el que toma a sueldo al necio o a los que pasan.

Like an archer who wounds everyone, So is he who hires a fool or who hires those who pass by.
11 Como perro que vuelve a su vómito es el necio que repite su necedad.

Like a dog that returns to its vomit Is a fool who repeats his folly.
12 ¿Has visto a un hombre que se tiene por sabio? Más esperanza hay para el necio que para él.

Do you see a man wise in his own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for him.
13 El perezoso dice: Hay un león en el camino; hay un león en medio de la plaza.

The sluggard says, "There is a lion in the road! A lion is in the open square!"
14 Como la puerta gira sobre sus goznes, así da vueltas el perezoso en su cama.

As the door turns on its hinges, So does the sluggard on his bed.
15 El perezoso mete la mano en el plato, pero se fatiga de llevársela a la boca.

The sluggard buries his hand in the dish; He is weary of bringing it to his mouth again.
16 El perezoso es más sabio ante sus propios ojos que siete que den una respuesta discreta.

The sluggard is wiser in his own eyes Than seven men who can give a discreet answer.
17 Como el que toma un perro por las orejas, así es el que pasa y se entremete en contienda que no es suya.

Like one who takes a dog by the ears Is he who passes by and meddles with strife not belonging to him.
18 Como el enloquecido que lanza teas encendidas, flechas y muerte,

Like a madman who throws Firebrands, arrows and death,
19 así es el hombre que engaña a su prójimo, y dice: ¿Acaso no estaba yo bromeando?

So is the man who deceives his neighbor, And says, "Was I not joking?"
20 Por falta de leña se apaga el fuego, y donde no hay chismoso, se calma la contienda.

For lack of wood the fire goes out, And where there is no whisperer, contention quiets down.
21 Como carbón para las brasas y leña para el fuego, así es el hombre rencilloso para encender contiendas.

Like charcoal to hot embers and wood to fire, So is a contentious man to kindle strife.
22 Las palabras del chismoso son como bocados deliciosos, y penetran hasta el fondo de las entrañas.

The words of a whisperer are like dainty morsels, And they go down into the innermost parts of the body.
23 Como vasija de barro revestida de escoria de plata, así son los labios ardientes y el corazón perverso.

Like an earthen vessel overlaid with silver dross Are burning lips and a wicked heart.
24 El que odia, disimula con sus labios, mas en su corazón acumula engaño.

He who hates disguises it with his lips, But he lays up deceit in his heart.
25 Cuando su voz sea agradable, no lo creas, pues hay siete abominaciones en su corazón.

When he speaks graciously, do not believe him, For there are seven abominations in his heart.
26 Aunque su odio se cubra con engaño, su perversidad será descubierta en la asamblea.

Though his hatred covers itself with guile, His wickedness will be revealed before the assembly.
27 El que cava un hoyo caerá en él, y el que hace rodar una piedra, sobre él volverá.

He who digs a pit will fall into it, And he who rolls a stone, it will come back on him.
28 La lengua mentirosa odia a los que oprime, y la boca lisonjera causa ruina.

A lying tongue hates those it crushes, And a flattering mouth works ruin.
