1 In my distress I cried unto the LORD, and he answered me.

I call on the LORD in my distress, and he answers me.
2 Deliver my soul, O LORD, from lying lips <em>and</em> from a deceitful tongue.

Save me, LORD, from lying lips and from deceitful tongues.
3 What shall be given unto thee? or what shall be done unto thee, thou false tongue?

What will he do to you, and what more besides, you deceitful tongue?
4 Sharp arrows of the mighty, with coals of juniper.

He will punish you with a warrior’s sharp arrows, with burning coals of the broom bush.
5 Woe is me, that I sojourn in Mesech, <em>that</em> I dwell in the tents of Kedar!

Woe to me that I dwell in Meshek, that I live among the tents of Kedar!
6 My soul has long dwelt with those that hate peace.

Too long have I lived among those who hate peace.
7 I <em>am for</em> peace; but when I speak, they <em>are</em> for war.
