New International Version NIV
The Message Bible MSG
1 Sing joyfully to the LORD, you righteous; it is fitting for the upright to praise him.
1
Good people, cheer God! Right-living people sound best when praising.
2 Praise the LORD with the harp; make music to him on the ten-stringed lyre.
2
Use guitars to reinforce your Hallelujahs! Play his praise on a grand piano!
3 Sing to him a new song; play skillfully, and shout for joy.
3
Invent your own new song to him; give him a trumpet fanfare.
4 For the word of the LORD is right and true; he is faithful in all he does.
4
For God's Word is solid to the core; everything he makes is sound inside and out.
5 The LORD loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full of his unfailing love.
5
He loves it when everything fits, when his world is in plumb-line true. Earth is drenched in God's affectionate satisfaction.
6 By the word of the LORD the heavens were made, their starry host by the breath of his mouth.
6
The skies were made by God's command; he breathed the word and the stars popped out.
7 He gathers the waters of the sea into jars ; he puts the deep into storehouses.
7
He scooped Sea into his jug, put Ocean in his keg.
8 Let all the earth fear the LORD; let all the people of the world revere him.
8
Earth-creatures, bow before God; world-dwellers - down on your knees!
9 For he spoke, and it came to be; he commanded, and it stood firm.
9
Here's why: he spoke and there it was, in place the moment he said so.
10 The LORD foils the plans of the nations; he thwarts the purposes of the peoples.
10
God takes the wind out of Babel pretense, he shoots down the world's power-schemes.
11 But the plans of the LORD stand firm forever, the purposes of his heart through all generations.
11
God's plan for the world stands up, all his designs are made to last.
12 Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD, the people he chose for his inheritance.
12
Blessed is the country with God for God; blessed are the people he's put in his will.
13 From heaven the LORD looks down and sees all mankind;
13
From high in the skies God looks around, he sees all Adam's brood.
14 from his dwelling place he watches all who live on earth—
14
From where he sits he overlooks all us earth-dwellers.
15 he who forms the hearts of all, who considers everything they do.
15
He has shaped each person in turn; now he watches everything we do.
16 No king is saved by the size of his army; no warrior escapes by his great strength.
16
No king succeeds with a big army alone, no warrior wins by brute strength.
17 A horse is a vain hope for deliverance; despite all its great strength it cannot save.
17
Horsepower is not the answer; no one gets by on muscle alone.
18 But the eyes of the LORD are on those who fear him, on those whose hope is in his unfailing love,
18
Watch this: God's eye is on those who respect him, the ones who are looking for his love.
19 to deliver them from death and keep them alive in famine.
19
He's ready to come to their rescue in bad times; in lean times he keeps body and soul together.
20 We wait in hope for the LORD; he is our help and our shield.
20
We're depending on God; he's everything we need.
21 In him our hearts rejoice, for we trust in his holy name.
21
What's more, our hearts brim with joy since we've taken for our own his holy name.
22 May your unfailing love be with us, LORD, even as we put our hope in you.
22
Love us, God, with all you've got - that's what we're depending on.
