1 <<To the chief musician: Upon Jonathelemrechokim. Michtam of David when the Philistines took him in Gath.>> Be merciful unto me, O God, for man would swallow me up; he, fighting daily, oppresseth me.
1 Have pity on me, O God, because people are harassing me. All day long warriors oppress me.
2 Mine enemies would daily swallow me up, for they are many that fight against me, O Thou Most High.
2 All day long my enemies spy on me. They harass me. There are so many fighting against me.
3 In the time I am afraid, I will trust in Thee.
3 Even when I am afraid, I still trust you.
4 In God I will praise His word, in God I have put my trust; I will not fear what flesh can do unto me.
4 I praise the word of God. I trust God. I am not afraid. What can mere flesh [and blood] do to me?
5 Every day they wrest my words; all their thoughts are against me for evil.
5 All day long my enemies twist my words. Their every thought is an evil plan against me.
6 They gather themselves together, they hide themselves, they mark my steps as they lie in wait for my soul.
6 They attack, and then they hide. They watch my every step as they wait to take my life.
7 Shall they escape by iniquity? In Thine anger cast down the people, O God.
7 With the wrong they do, can they escape? O God, angrily make the nations fall.
8 Thou countest my wanderings; put Thou my tears into Thy bottle: are they not in Thy book?
8 (You have kept a record of my wanderings. Put my tears in your bottle. They are already in your book.)
9 When I cry unto Thee, then shall mine enemies turn back! This I know, for God is for me.
9 Then my enemies will retreat when I call [to you]. This I know: God is on my side.
10 In God will I praise His word; in the LORD will I praise His word.
10 I praise the word of God. I praise the word of the LORD.
11 In God have I put my trust; I will not be afraid what man can do unto me.
11 I trust God. I am not afraid. What can mortals do to me?
12 Thy vows are upon me, O God; I will render praises unto Thee.
12 I am bound by my vows to you, O God. I will keep my vows by offering songs of thanksgiving to you.
13 For Thou hast delivered my soul from death; wilt Thou not deliver my feet from falling, that I may walk before God in the light of the living?
13 You have rescued me from death. You have kept my feet from stumbling so that I could walk in your presence, in the light of life.
