Douay-Rheims Catholic Bible RHE
1 Deliver me from my enemies, O God; be my fortress against those who are attacking me.
1
(58-1) <Unto the end, destroy not, for David for an inscription of a title, when Saul sent and watched his house to kill him.> (58-2) Deliver me from my enemies, O my God; and defend me from them that rise up against me.
2 Deliver me from evildoers and save me from those who are after my blood.
2
(58-3) Deliver me from them that work iniquity, and save me from bloody men.
3 See how they lie in wait for me! Fierce men conspire against me for no offense or sin of mine, LORD.
3
(58-4) For behold they have caught my soul: the mighty have rushed in upon me:
4 I have done no wrong, yet they are ready to attack me. Arise to help me; look on my plight!
4
(58-5) Neither is it my iniquity, nor my sin, O Lord: without iniquity have I been, and directed my steps.
5 You, LORD God Almighty, you who are the God of Israel, rouse yourself to punish all the nations; show no mercy to wicked traitors.
5
(58-6) Rise up thou to meet me, and behold: even thou, O Lord, the God of hosts, the God of Israel. Attend to visit all the nations: have no mercy on all them that work iniquity.
6 They return at evening, snarling like dogs, and prowl about the city.
6
(58-7) They shall return at evening, and shall suffer hunger like dogs: and shall go round about the city.
7 See what they spew from their mouths— the words from their lips are sharp as swords, and they think, “Who can hear us?”
7
(58-8) Behold they shall speak with their mouth, and a sword is in their lips: for who, say they, hath heard us?
8 But you laugh at them, LORD; you scoff at all those nations.
8
(58-9) But thou, O Lord, shalt laugh at them: thou shalt bring all the nations to nothing.
9 You are my strength, I watch for you; you, God, are my fortress,
9
(58-10) I will keep my strength to thee: for thou art my protector:
10 my God on whom I can rely. God will go before me and will let me gloat over those who slander me.
10
(58-11) My God, his mercy shall prevent me.
11 But do not kill them, Lord our shield,or my people will forget. In your might uproot them and bring them down.
11
(58-12) God shall let me see over my enemies: slay them not, lest at any time my people forget. Scatter them by thy power; and bring them down, O Lord, my protector:
12 For the sins of their mouths, for the words of their lips, let them be caught in their pride. For the curses and lies they utter,
12
(58-13) For the sin of their mouth, and the word of their lips: and let them be taken in their pride. And for their cursing and lying they shall be talked of,
13 consume them in your wrath, consume them till they are no more. Then it will be known to the ends of the earth that God rules over Jacob.
13
(58-14) When they are consumed: when they are consumed by thy wrath, and they shall be no more. And they shall know that God will rule Jacob, and all the ends of the earth.
14 They return at evening, snarling like dogs, and prowl about the city.
14
(58-15) They shall return at evening and shall suffer hunger like dogs: and shall go round about the city.
15 They wander about for food and howl if not satisfied.
15
(58-16) They shall be scattered abroad to eat, and shall murmur if they be not filled.
16 But I will sing of your strength, in the morning I will sing of your love; for you are my fortress, my refuge in times of trouble.
16
(58-17) But I will sing thy strength: and will extol thy mercy in the morning. For thou art become my support, and my refuge, in the day of my trouble.
17 You are my strength, I sing praise to you; you, God, are my fortress, my God on whom I can rely.
17
(58-18) Unto thee, O my helper, will I sing, for thou art God my defence: my God my mercy.
