1 In Judah <em>is</em> God known; his name <em>is</em> great in Israel.

God is renowned in Judah; in Israel his name is great.
2 In Salem also is his tabernacle and his dwelling place in Zion.

3 There he broke the arrows of the bow, the shield, and the sword, and the war. Selah.

There he broke the flashing arrows, the shields and the swords, the weapons of war.
4 Thou <em>art</em> more glorious <em>and</em> excellent than the mountains of prey.

You are radiant with light, more majestic than mountains rich with game.
5 The stouthearted are spoiled; they have slept their sleep; and nothing was found in the hands of the men of might.

The valiant lie plundered, they sleep their last sleep; not one of the warriors can lift his hands.
6 At thy rebuke, O God of Jacob, both the chariot and horse are cast into a dead sleep.

At your rebuke, God of Jacob, both horse and chariot lie still.
7 Thou, <em>even</em> thou, <em>art</em> to be feared, and who may stand in thy sight when once thou art angry?

It is you alone who are to be feared. Who can stand before you when you are angry?
8 From the heavens thou didst cause judgment to be heard; the earth feared and was still,

From heaven you pronounced judgment, and the land feared and was quiet—
9 when thou didst arise unto judgment, O God, to save all the meek of the earth. Selah.

when you, God, rose up to judge, to save all the afflicted of the land.
10 Surely the wrath of man shall cause praise to come unto thee; the remainder of wrath shalt thou restrain.

Surely your wrath against mankind brings you praise, and the survivors of your wrath are restrained.
11 Vow and pay unto the LORD your God; let all that be round about him bring presents unto him that ought to be feared.

Make vows to the LORD your God and fulfill them; let all the neighboring lands bring gifts to the One to be feared.
12 He shall cut off the spirit of princes; <em>he is</em> terrible to the kings of the earth.

He breaks the spirit of rulers; he is feared by the kings of the earth.
