1 <<A Psalm of Asaph.>> O God, the heathen have come into Thine inheritance; Thy holy temple have they defiled, they have laid Jerusalem in heaps.

O God, the nations have invaded the land that belongs to you. They have dishonored your holy temple. They have left Jerusalem in ruins.
2 The dead bodies of Thy servants have they given to be meat unto the fowls of the heavens, the flesh of Thy saints unto the beasts of the earth.

They have given the dead bodies of your servants to the birds for food. They have given the flesh of your godly ones to the animals.
3 Their blood have they shed like water round about Jerusalem, and there was none to bury them.

They have shed the blood of your people around Jerusalem as though it were water. There is no one to bury your people.
4 We have become a reproach to our neighbors, a scorn and derision to them that are round about us.

We have become a disgrace to our neighbors, an object of ridicule and contempt to those around us.
5 How long, LORD? Wilt Thou be angry for ever? Shall Thy jealousy burn like fire?

How long, O LORD? Will you remain angry forever? Will your fury continue to burn like fire?
6 Pour out Thy wrath upon the heathen that have not known Thee, and upon the kingdoms that have not called upon Thy name;

Pour your fury on the nations that do not know you, on the kingdoms that have not called you.
7 for they have devoured Jacob and laid waste his dwelling place.

They have devoured Jacob. They have destroyed his home.
8 O remember not former iniquities against us; let Thy tender mercies go speedily before us, for we are brought very low.

Do not hold the crimes of our ancestors against us. Reach out to us soon with your compassion, because we are helpless.
9 Help us, O God of our salvation, for the glory of Thy name; and deliver us and purge away our sins, for Thy name's sake.

Help us, O God, our savior, for the glory of your name. Rescue us, and forgive our sins for the honor of your name.
10 Why should the heathen say, "Where is their God?" Let Him be known among the heathen in our sight by the avenging of the blood of Thy servants which is shed.

Why should the nations [be allowed to] say, "Where is their God?" Let us watch as the nations learn that there is punishment for shedding the blood of your servants.
11 Let the sighing of the prisoner come before Thee; according to the greatness of Thy power, preserve Thou those that are appointed to die.

Let the groans of prisoners come into your presence. With your powerful arm rescue those who are condemned to death.
12 And render unto the bosom of our neighbors sevenfold their reproach wherewith they have reproached Thee, O Lord.

Pay each one of our neighbors back with seven times the number of insults they used to insult you, O Lord.
13 So we Thy people and the sheep of Thy pasture, will give Thee thanks for ever; we will show forth Thy praise to all generations.

Then we, your people, the flock in your pasture, will give thanks to you forever. We will praise you throughout every generation.
