Isaia 34:8-17

8 Poiché è il giorno della vendetta dell’Eterno, l’anno della retribuzione per la causa di Sion.

9 I torrenti d’Edom saran mutati in pece, e la sua polvere in zolfo, e la sua terra diventerà pece ardente.

10 Non si spegnerà né notte né giorno, il fumo ne salirà in perpetuo; d’età in età rimarrà deserta, nessuno vi passerà mai più.

11 Il pellicano e il porcospino ne prenderanno possesso, la civetta ed il corvo v’abiteranno; l’Eterno vi stenderà la corda della desolazione, il livello del deserto.

12 Quanto ai suoi nobili, non ve ne saran più per proclamare un re, e tutti i suoi principi saran ridotti a nulla.

13 Nei suoi palazzi cresceranno le spine; nelle sue fortezze, le ortiche ed i cardi; diventerà una dimora di sciacalli, un chiuso per gli struzzi.

14 Le bestie del deserto vi s’incontreranno coi cani selvatici, il satiro vi chiamerà il compagno; quivi lo spettro notturno farà la sua dimora, e vi troverà il suo luogo di riposo.

15 Quivi il serpente farà il suo nido, deporrà le sue uova, le coverà, e raccoglierà i suoi piccini sotto di sé; quivi si raccoglieranno gli avvoltoi, l’uno chiamando l’altro.

16 cercate nel libro dell’Eterno, e leggete; nessuna di quelle bestie vi mancherà; nessuna sarà privata della sua compagna; poiché la sua bocca l’ha comandato, e il suo soffio li radunerà.

17 Egli stesso ha tirato a sorte per essi, e la sua mano ha diviso tra loro con la corda il paese; quelli ne avranno il possesso in perpetuo, v’abiteranno d’età in età.

Isaia 34:8-17 Meaning and Commentary

INTRODUCTION TO ISAIAH 34

This chapter is a prophecy of the destruction of all the antichristian nations of the world, and particularly of Rome, signified by Idumea; which is introduced with a call to a general attention to it, it being a very awful and solemn affair, Isa 34:1 utter and universal destruction is declared, as the effect of God's wrath, Isa 34:2 which is expressed by a dreadful scene of blood, to the melting of the mountains with it, and by the dissolution of the heavens, and the hosts of them, Isa 34:3,4 particularly the destruction of Idumea is denounced by the sword of the Lord being on it, and bathed with the blood, both of the common people, and of their princes, signified by various sorts of creatures, Isa 34:5-7 the cause of which is the Lord's vengeance for the controversy of his church and people, injured by Edom or Rome, Isa 34:8 whose desolate and calamitous state is represented as being like that of Sodom, Isa 34:9,10 and should be no more inhabited by men, nor governed by princes, but be the dwelling of wild beasts and unclean birds, Isa 34:11-15 all which is confirmed by the word and Spirit of God, Isa 34:16,17.
