Author Ken Blanchard reminds us that "All good performance starts with clear goals." He points to the story of Alice's encounter with the Cheshire Cat in Alice in Wonderland. Alice asked what road she should take, and the cat responded, "Where are you going?" When Alice told him she wasn't sure, the cat replied, "If you don't know where you're going, any road will get you there."

As Blanchard points out to leaders, "An important way to motivate your people is to make sure they know where they are going. See that each person's goals are clearly defined and he or she knows what good performance looks like. This will give them a clear focus for their energy and put them on the road to becoming high performing, empowered producers."
