5 I suoi avversari han preso il sopravvento, i suoi nemici prosperano; poiché l’Eterno l’ha afflitta per la moltitudine delle sue trasgressioni; i suoi bambini sono andati in cattività, davanti all’avversario.

Lamentations 1:5

Her adversaries are the chief
Or, "for the head" ^F14; or are the head, as was threatened, ( Deuteronomy 28:44 ) ; and now fulfilled; the Chaldeans having got the dominion over the Jews, and obliged them to be subject to them: her enemies prosper;
in wealth and riches, in grandeur and glory; live in ease and tranquillity, enjoying all outward felicity and happiness; while Zion was in distress; which was an aggravation of it; and yet this was but righteous judgment: for the Lord hath afflicted her;
who is righteous in all his ways: the Chaldeans were but instruments; the evil was from the Lord, according to his will and righteous determination, as appears by what follows: for the multitude of her transgressions: her children are gone into
captivity before the enemy;
that is, the inhabitants of Jerusalem and Judea were carried captive by the enemy, and drove before them as a flock of sheep, and that for the sins of the nation; and these not a few, but were very numerous, as Mordecai and Ezekiel, and others, who were carried captive young with Jeconiah, as well as many now.

3 Giuda è andato in esilio, a motivo dell’afflizione e del duro servaggio; abita in mezzo alle nazioni, non trova riposo; tutti i suoi persecutori l’han raggiunto quand’era fra le gole strette.

4 Le vie di Sion fanno cordoglio, perché nessuno vien più alle solenni assemblee; tutte le sue porte sono deserte; i suoi sacerdoti sospirano, le sue vergini sono addolorate, ed ella stessa è piena d’amarezza.

5 I suoi avversari han preso il sopravvento, i suoi nemici prosperano; poiché l’Eterno l’ha afflitta per la moltitudine delle sue trasgressioni; i suoi bambini sono andati in cattività, davanti all’avversario.

6 E dalla figliuola di Sion se n’è andato tutto il suo splendore; i suoi capi sono diventati come cervi che non trovan pastura e se ne vanno spossati dinanzi a colui che l’insegue.

7 Nei giorni della sua afflizione, della sua vita errante, Gerusalemme si ricorda di tutti i beni preziosi che possedeva fino dai giorni antichi; ora che il suo popolo è caduto in man dell’avversario, e nessuno la soccorre, i suoi avversari la guardano, e ridono del suo misero stato.
