And the chief seats in the synagogues
Where the rulers of the synagogue, and the elders of the people sat; (See Gill on Matthew 23:6).

And the uppermost rooms at feasts;
or the first and chief places where they sat, or rather lay along at public entertainment; (See Gill on Matthew 23:6).

39 ed avere i primi seggi nelle sinagoghe e i primi posti ne’ conviti;

40 essi che divorano le case delle vedove, e fanno per apparenza lunghe orazioni. Costoro riceveranno una maggiore condanna.

41 E postosi a sedere dirimpetto alla cassa delle offerte, stava guardando come la gente gettava danaro nella cassa; e molti ricchi ne gettavano assai.
